Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par crosses Rs 66 crore in four days, surpassing Laal Singh Chaddha's India total.
Aamir Khan's latest release Sitaare Zameen Par is shining bright at the box office. After its theatrical release last Friday, the film has managed to cross the Rs 66 crore mark in just four days, surpassing the India haul of Aamir's previous film Laal Singh Chaddha (Rs 61.36 crore).
The sports drama, which features Aamir as a basketball coach guiding a team of children with special needs, saw a strong weekend driven by positive word-of-mouth and heartfelt storytelling. On Sunday alone, it collected Rs 27.25 crore. However, as per Sacnilk, the film witnessed a drop on Monday, earning only Rs 8.27 crore. Despite the dip, the total India earnings now stand at Rs 66.42 crore.
Directed by RS Prasanna and written by Divy Nidhi Sharma, Sitaare Zameen Par features a fresh ensemble cast including Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar. Genelia D'Souza plays Aamir's wife in the film.
Aamir's decision to skip an OTT release and focus on bringing audiences back to theatres appears to be working. The film's touching narrative and powerful music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, have further elevated its appeal.
Internationally, the film has already collected Rs 95.75 crore within its opening weekend and is poised to cross Rs 100 crore worldwide. It marks a strong comeback for Aamir Khan after the lukewarm response to Laal Singh Chaddha.
The industry too has rallied behind Sitaare Zameen Par. Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar posted on X (formerly Twitter), 'So happy to learn about the record leap that Sitaare Zameen Par has taken at the box office on the second day. Who says good films have no takers in the audience. Congratulations to Aamir Khan and his team." Actors like Ritesh Deshmukh and Mahesh Babu also praised the film for its emotional impact.
Co-produced by Aamir Khan, Aparna Purohit, and Ravi Bhagchandka, the film reiterates that powerful stories with heart continue to resonate deeply with Indian audiences.

New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): Legendary actor Anupam Kher's directorial 'Tanvi The Great' has been garnering attention with its multiple premieres in different countries. After Cannes and London, Kher now treated the US audience to his labour of love. On Monday, the film's gala premiere was organised in Houston, where Kher received a standing ovation. Expressing gratitude to the audience, Kher on Instagram wrote, 'Thank you #Houston for that resounding STANDING OVATION to our film #TanviTheGreat. Please continue with your support and love. Our film releases on 18th July! Tanvi will certainly change your world. For better! #Premiere #NorthAmerica.' Earlier, Kher recently opened up about the reaction received by the audience at the Cannes film festival on the world premiere of his 'Tanvi The Great'. While speaking to ANI, Kher said he was 'overwhelmed' by how deeply the crowd connected with the film. The actor also shared how people in the theatre clapped, laughed, cried, and stayed back to ask questions after the screening.'I was very overwhelmed by the reaction of people. They were clapping in between because the theme of the film resonated with them. They were crying, laughing at the end of the film. They didn't want to leave. They were asking questions. It's a beautiful feeling.' When asked what the recognition means to him and his team, especially after the struggles the film faced during its making, Kher said, 'The success of the film on an international platform like Cannes and then in London proves that if you do something with conviction against all odds, it is the most gratifying feeling, and it will reach people's hearts. The film was made with great difficulty because people who were supposed to finance the film backed out at the last minute, but then I said, 'I have to make it because it's my conviction.' 'Tanvi The Great' follows 21-year-old Tanvi Raina, a woman with autism who discovers her late Indian Army officer father's unfulfilled dream--to stand at Siachen, the world's highest battlefield, and salute the Indian flag. "This one is special": Athiya Shetty gives shout-out to husband KL Rahul as he slams 9th Test Century

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 23 (ANI): Actor Athiya Shetty has praised her husband and cricketer KL Rahul for his 9th Test Century. On Monday, Athiya posted a picture of KL Rahul from the match on her Instagram Story and wrote, 'This one is special.' Athiya also reposted actor Arjun Kapoor's Instagram Story, where Arjun can be seen playing cricket and wrote an adorable caption. '@klrahul stunning off drives while scoring his beautiful century in Headingley. Inspiring me in Bandra!!,' he captioned. Indian opener KL Rahul continued his brilliant run in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia (SENA) conditions, re-writing record books with yet another classy century against England during the first Test at Leeds on Monday. After playing a solid knock of 42 runs in the first innings, but missing out on scoring big in the first innings, KL made the most of all chances he got, scoring an unbeaten 120* in 227 balls, with 15 fours by the end of second session. His runs came at a strike rate of 52.86. This is KL's sixth century in SENA countries, including three in England, one in Australia and two in South Africa. KL overtook legendary Rahul Dravid (2) to register his third century in England as an opener, the most by an Indian in the country as an opener. This is his fourth century as an opener against England, tying with Sunil Gavaskar and Rohit Sharma (4 each). This is KL's fifth century as an opener in SENA conditions for India, and he is four away from breaking the record of Gavaskar (nine centuries). He has levelled with Mohammed Azharuddin and Rishabh Pant (six centuries each) to have the joint fourth-most centuries by an Indian in SENA conditions. The record holder here is legendary Sachin Tendulkar (17), followed by Virat Kohli (12) and Dravid (10). KL has a solid record in England, with 776 runs in 10 matches and 20 innings at an average of 40.84, with three centuries and a fifty. His best score is 149. Coming to the match, at Tea, India were 298/4, with KL Rahul (120*) and Karun Nair (4*) unbeaten. Pant scored 118 runs in the second innings, his second ton in the match, and consolidated the innings with a crucial 195-run partnership with KL Rahul. India started the second session at 153/3, with Pant (31*) and KL (72*) unbeaten. The duo launched a brilliant counter-attack against English bowling, taking them to their respective centuries, with Pant dismissed for 118 in 140 balls, with 15 fours and three sixes. India ended the first session at 153/3, with vice-captain Rishabh Pant (31*) and KL Rahul (72*) unbeaten. Despite Carse striking early, removing Shubman for just eight and sinking India to 92/3, Team India managed to give themselves a solid platform to go all guns out blazing for the remainder of the match, but not without giving England some chances. The final session on day three was cut short due to rain. Rahul was joined by skipper Shubman Gill, who was unbeaten on 6*. India ended at 90/2. England started the second session at 327/5, with Harry Brook (57*) and Jamie Smith (29*) unbeaten. Brook continued his counter-attack, while Smith (40 in 52 balls, with five fours and a six), Chris Woakes (38 in 55 balls, with three fours and two sixes) and Brydon Cwefarse (22 in 23 balls, with four boundaries) also piled up useful scores. Brook missed out on his century, scoring 99 in 112 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes, with Prasidh Krishna getting him caught by Shardul Thakur at deep backwards square leg. A 55-run stand between Woakes and Carse took England past the 400-run mark, and they threatened to surpass India's first innings total before Jasprit Bumrah came in clutch. Bumrah (5/83) and Prasidh Krishna (3/128) were the top bowlers as England was bowled out for 465. England kickstarted the first session of the day at 209/3, with Ollie Pope (100*) and Brook (0*) unbeaten. While Prasidh struck early to remove Pope (106 in 137 balls, with 14 fours), Brook stitched a 51-run stand with skipper Ben Stokes (20 in 52 balls) and a 73-run stand with Smith, taking England well beyond the 300-run mark at session end. A century by Ollie Pope (106 in 137 balls, with 14 fours) and fifty from Ben Duckett (62 in 94 balls, with nine fours) on day two served as valuable contributions as well. Brief Scores: England: 465 (OIlie Pope 106, Harry Brook 99, Jasprit Bumrah 5/83) vs India: 471 and 298/4: KL Rahul 120*, Rishabh Pant 118, Brydon Carse 2/62). (ANI)

Rath Para activity peaks in run-up to festival

Kolkata: Digambar Malik, 57, is very busy these days. His smartphone keeps buzzing as he answers calls from Rathyatra organisers from traditional homes and clubs, asking for updates on the progress of work and the date of delivery. Between calls, Malik and his team create three-dimensional chariots out of split bamboo or cane from hand-drawn sketches on the streets. For Malik and 40 others like him from Ramesh Chandra Dutta Street off Girish Park metro station and Liberty cinema hall — prominently known as Rath Para — this is the busiest season before the all-important Durga Puja. The artisans together supply around 800 chariots and their accessories to homes and clubs across Bengal. "Big raths are usually ordered by Jagannath temples and various clubs. We just delivered one chariot to Chinsurah. There's been a sharp rise in demand for designer chariots this year from areas like Serampore and Uttarpara," said Malik. While the small ones come within the price range of Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000, the bigger ones cost around Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000. "The orders have peaked in the last two years. There was a slump in demand during the Covid years, but the situation seems to have changed in the last two years. This year, the orders have doubled, and almost all 40 artisans out here are making anything between 20 to 25 chariots this year," said Boikuntho Majhi, another artisan, who is in this profession since Class 6. What has made Rath Para more popular this year is a group of young members in the family of the artisans who have turned into social media content creators. They have been making reels and videos of the para and the process of construction. "I made a video on my own neighbourhood showcasing our artisans in 2022, which gained immense traction. Eventually, creators started noticing this place, and they began shooting vlogs and making reels. Many such videos have gone viral. The demand has also shot up," said Abhishek Ghati, a content creator from the area. Biswanath Maity, another artisan, acknowledged the social media presence leading to a rise in orders. "There's been a good demand this year with more people discovering the rath bazaar through social media and influencers. It feels nice," he said. Equally busy are 35 artisans at Canal South Road in north Kolkata, known as the hub of smaller chariots that kids in every household love to pull. The prices range from Rs 50 to Rs 150 in the wholesale market. There are artisans like Prasenjit Saha, who make and sell fancy chariots priced at anything between Rs 650 to Rs 950. These are sold at anything between Rs 900 to Rs 1,500 in the retail market.
