Anwar announces RM10mil allocation to spur development in Muar
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the funds would be disbursed immediately to ensure that Muar residents can begin reaping the benefits in the near future.
"The government wants the people of Muar to enjoy balanced development.
"As such, this RM10 million allocation will be utilised effectively through various identified development projects," he said during the launch of the 2025 National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Campaign at Tanjung Emas here today.
Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the implementation of the projects would be coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister's Department together with the Muar District Office.
Earlier, Onn Hafiz expressed his appreciation to the government for selecting Muar as the host of the 2025 National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Campaign launch.
"Muar is a place where the history of independence was shaped and is the birthplace of key figures who paved the way for nation-building, including Datuk Onn Jaafar, Tan Sri Mohamed Noah Omar, and Abdul Majid Salleh.
"When Johor, particularly Muar, is chosen, I believe it is not a coincidence but a recognition of its historical significance," he said.
After launching the event, Anwar also flagged off the 2025 Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy, involving 88 land vehicles and 66 water transport assets, with more than 300 participants in total.
The convoy will carry the Jalur Gemilang flag across the country, passing through 88 checkpoints (44 in Peninsular Malaysia, 20 in Sabah, 22 in Sarawak, and two in the Federal Territory of Labuan) before concluding at Dataran Putrajaya on Aug 31, the venue for the 2025 National Day celebration.

Backbenchers Club praises Anwar for US tariff reductions benefiting SMEs
PETALING JAYA: The Backbenchers Club (BBC) commended Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the recent tariff reduction by the United States, as it also enables small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to achieve long-term competitiveness in high-growth sectors. The tariff was reduced from 25% to 19%. 'These efforts are essential not only to absorb the impact of global trade fluctuations but to position Malaysian companies, especially SMEs, for long-term competitiveness in high-growth sectors,' said BBC in a statement on Friday (Aug 1). Although this is a positive step, the BBC highlighted the need to persist with economic reform, expand into new markets, and develop a resilient economy. 'I commend the Prime Minister for defending that space while keeping the door open to meaningful trade engagement with one of our largest partners,' said the statement According to a report in The Star, the new tariff structure would take effect in seven days and apply to goods entering the US for consumption, with limited exceptions for shipments already in transit.

13MP will provide rural students with greater access to TVET training, says VC
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who tabled the 13MP yesterday, said the government will introduce a Madani TVET financing scheme and a TVET training fund. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Students in rural areas will have access to more affordable technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programmes under the numerous 13th Malaysia Plan initiatives, an academic said. Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka vice-chancellor Massila Kamalrudin said the full scholarships offered would not only cover training fees, but also the cost of living, which would allow the B40 and M40 to further their studies without placing too much financial burden on these groups. 'A mobile TVET programme and a satellite training centre will allow for TVET to be introduced to more rural areas and the Orang Asli community, who did not have proper access to TVET institutions in the past. 'Such an approach means that no one is left behind in the country's development,' she said in a statement. Tabling the 13MP yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government will introduce a Madani TVET financing scheme and a TVET training fund. Massila said the training fund would help equip students with the skills to match the demands of the market in sectors such as renewable energy, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence. She said youths are gravitating more towards TVET as it provided a clearer career path. 'TVET graduates don't just obtain certificates, but are guaranteed jobs due to tie-ups with the industry,' she said. Separately, the University of Cyberjaya described the 13MP as a 'roadmap for reshaping the human capital landscape of Malaysia'. Its vice-chancellor, David Whitford, hailed the five-year plan's emphasis on AI literacy, digital skills, and entrepreneurship. 'We also support the MP13's proposed pilot autonomy for universities, recognising this as a critical step toward greater innovation, agility, and accountability in higher education,' he said.
