
Facing hair loss due to PCOS? Dietician shares diet, hair care tips to manage hair fall
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is caused by cyst formation in the ovaries, that can lead to acne, obesity, menstrual irregularity and mood swings. Hair loss is one of the effects of PCOS. In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dietitian Vidhi Chawla, founder of Fisico Diet and Aesthetic Clinic said, 'Hair loss, often resembling male-pattern baldness, is a distressing symptom for many. This hair loss, driven by hormonal imbalances, particularly elevated androgens, can be addressed through natural approaches, focusing on internal and external factors.' The dietician further recommended these dietary changes to manage PCOS-induced hair loss:
Low-Glycemic Index (GI) diet: Prioritise foods with a low GI, such as whole grains, legumes, and non-starchy vegetables. This helps regulate insulin levels, which can influence androgen production.
Anti-inflammatory foods: Incorporate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (fatty fish, flaxseeds), antioxidants (berries, leafy greens), and anti-inflammatory spices (turmeric, ginger).
Protein power: Ensure adequate protein intake to support hair growth. Lean protein sources like chicken, fish, and beans are essential.
Limit processed foods: Minimise processed foods, sugary drinks, and refined carbohydrates, which can exacerbate insulin resistance and inflammation.
Certain herbs and supplements may help regulate hormones and promote hair growth.
Saw palmetto: This herb may help block the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT); a hormone linked to hair loss.
Inositol: This supplement can improve insulin sensitivity and regulate hormone levels.
Spearmint tea: Spearmint tea may help reduce androgen levels.
Biotin: While its effectiveness varies, biotin, a B vitamin, is often recommended for hair health. It is very important to consult with a medical professional before taking biotin, as it can affect lab results.
Vitamin D: Since many with PCOS are vitamin D deficient, supplementation might prove helpful.
Scalp massages: Regular scalp massages can improve blood circulation to the hair follicles, potentially stimulating hair growth.

Dr Jain said 'yoga has emerged as a powerful and holistic tool in managing anxiety and depression', offering both physical and emotional relief through a blend of mindful movement, breath control, and meditation. She said: 'Unlike conventional treatments that often focus solely on symptom suppression, yoga addresses the root of mental unrest by calming the nervous system, improving self-awareness, and fostering inner balance.' According to Dr Jain, regular yoga practice also boosts serotonin and endorphin levels, which are natural mood enhancers, making it especially beneficial for those struggling with fatigue and low motivation associated with depression. Moreover, the meditative aspect of yoga cultivates mindfulness, helping individuals break free from cycles of overthinking and emotional overwhelm, Dr Jain said. "Research supports these benefits, with studies showing improvements in sleep quality, reduced cortisol levels, and decreased symptoms of anxiety and depression among consistent practitioners," she said and added that while yoga is not a replacement for medical or psychological treatment in severe cases, 'it serves as a valuable complementary therapy that enhances emotional resilience and promotes long-term mental well-being'. 'In a fast-paced world marked by constant stress, yoga offers a safe and sustainable path to mental clarity and inner peace,' Dr Jain said. She added that practices like pranayama (breathwork) help regulate the breath, reducing stress hormone levels and activating the parasympathetic nervous system to induce a state of relaxation. Dr Jain said: 'Gentle asanas such as Child's Pose, Cobra Pose, and Legs-Up-the-Wall have a grounding effect, easing physical tension while uplifting mood.' Prerna further said, 'As someone who has dedicated their life to holistic wellness, I've seen firsthand how yoga can be a transformative tool in managing anxiety and depression. Yoga isn't just about movement — it's about coming home to yourself. Through breathwork (pranayama), mindful movement, and meditation, yoga helps regulate the nervous system, reduce cortisol levels, and improve emotional resilience.' Anti-dandruff shampoos: Shampoos are the mainstay of dandruff control; ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, and salicylic acid-based shampoos are often available over the counter (OTC). Newer anti-fungal-based shampoos can be used in stubborn cases on a dermatologist's recommendation. 2. Regular hair wash: Twice or thrice weekly hair wash with a leave-on time of five to ten minutes for the action of actives in the shampoos should be done. 3. Maintain scalp hygiene: Keep the hair dry, avoid tying wet hair, dry your hair gently if you get wet in the rain, avoid harsh hair products (SLS, parabens) or heavy oils and leave oil on the scalp only for a few hours. 4. Maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle: A balanced diet rich in zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, along with stress management, can help prevent dandruff flares. When to visit a doctor? If there is excess flaking, itching, oozing or your dandruff is uncontrolled with OTC products, do consult a dermatologist. If dandruff is left untreated, it can progress to seborrheic dermatitis and involve areas beyond the scalp, disrupt scalp health, lead to hair thinning, and cause secondary skin issues like forehead acne. Dandruff has to be differentiated from scalp psoriasis. The dermat concluded, 'Appropriate consultation with board certified dermatologist for individualised treatment approach and stubborn dandruff is mandatory.'
