In all, 405 cases were reported in 2022-23, 709 in 2023-24 and 685 in 2024-25. The increase is because of children's excessive use of social media and their tendency to fall in love at a tender age. Changing family dynamics and child marriages too are to be blamed, she said.
JDS MLA Suresh Babu demanded that the state government have some control over social media. 'Many a time, unsavoury advertisements pop up while children are using social media. Children should be provided proper sex education,' he said.
When he said over 26,000 minor girls have become pregnant in the last 10 months, Hebbalkar said the number looks alarming, but she did not know whether it is correct. But the MLA said many cases go unreported. He alleged that in the last four months, over 900 girls have been raped.
Women's safety: Akka Pade from Aug 15
Vasudeva Sharma NV, Executive Director, Child Rights Trust, agreed that social media is one of the main reasons for increasing teen pregnancies. He said the internet has penetrated every village and regulating the use of social media is challenging. Some suicides too are linked to the use of social media, he said.
He said there is something called self-generated porn, where a boy or man would ask a girl to send her nude photos which he might leak to his friends. The girl would then be blackmailed into giving sexual favours. This horrific trend is not limited to urban areas, but also rural parts. 'Young girls should be provided life skills training that includes safe use of the internet,'' he added.
Meanwhle, Laxmi Hebbalkar said to ensure women's safety, the government will launch Akka Pade (Akka task force) in major cities where a vehicle with women police will patrol near colleges, markets and other places. From August 15, these Pades will be started in Mysuru, Belagavi and Mangaluru. The vehicle will have women police officials and NCC cadets.

Five held for slaughtering cattle in Nelamangala
The Nelamangala Rural police have arrested a gang of five for slaughtering two cows and dumped their carcass on Nelamangala-Aralasandra village Road, Kasaba hobli last week. The accused used to sell the meat to buyers from Kerala. They bought cattle from Shivaji Nagar market and took it to a buyer at Nelamangala. However, the buyer rejected two of them because of their physical condition. Instead of taking them back, the accused allegedly slaughtered the two cows and dumped their carcass on the roadside and sent the rest of the load with the trader. The incident came to light when two police personnel who were on a patrol found the carcasses with their throats slit and reported the incident to the station. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against unknown persons charging them under Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020. The issue was highlighted by a group of self-styled cow vigilantes and Hindutva activists and was raised in the ongoing Assembly session. Taking a serious note, Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru Rural, C.K. Baba formed two special teams that tracked down the accused based on technical evidence.

LUCKNOW: Chail MLA Pooja Pal, who was recently expelled by Samajwadi Party for anti-party activities, called on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at his official residence in Lucknow. Both the office of the chief minister and the MLA posted about the meeting on micro-blogging site X on Saturday night. "Honourable MLA of Chail assembly constituency of Kaushambi district, Pooja Pal, made a courtesy visit to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow today," the office of Yogi Adityanath said in a post in Hindi. Sharing a photograph of the meeting, Pal said in a post in Hindi, "I once again thank the honourable chief minister. Under his leadership, goons and mafias are shown their rightful place, which is very important for a progressive society." Pooja Pal was expelled from the Samajwadi Party on Thursday, just hours after she praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the Assembly for "reducing to dust" gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, who was accused of murdering her husband Raju Pal in 2005. During the 24-hour special discussion on 'Vision 2047' during the ongoing monsoon session of the Assembly, Pal had said that the present government's anti-crime policies had brought her husband's killers to the ground. "The chief minister has done the work of reducing my husband's murderer Atiq Ahmed into dust. He saw my hidden tears, which no one saw for years," she told the House. Pooja Pal's husband Raju Pal, a former BSP MLA From Prayagraj West, was shot dead nine days after their wedding in January 2005, in an attack linked to Atiq Ahmed. Ahmed, a former MP and multiple-time MLA from Allahabad West, was serving a life sentence when he and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three assailants while they were being escorted by police for a medical check-up in Prayagraj on April 15, 2023. The killing took place in full view of the media and was broadcast live.
