Umno must embrace digital shift to engage youth, says Zambry

The Sun8 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno must take charge of the digital narrative, expand its presence on new media platforms, and actively engage younger voters to maintain its relevance, said Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
He emphasised that politics has evolved into the digital age, where perceptions and sentiments are rapidly shaped through social media and online discourse.
'This new challenge demands that Umno adopts fresher, more flexible, and pragmatic approaches.
We cannot remain confined to outdated methods,' Zambry stated in a Facebook post.
The Barisan Nasional secretary-general and Higher Education Minister clarified that modernising strategies does not mean abandoning Umno's core principles but rather presenting its values in a more effective and inclusive manner.
He also highlighted the importance of unity within the party, calling it the foundation of Umno's strength over its 79-year history.
'Internal divisions will only weaken the party's survival,' he cautioned. - Bernama

Sabah polls: PH has a delicate balancing act to pull off, says former CM Salleh

KOTA KINABALU: It will be up to Pakatan Harapan to walk the tightrope in juggling electoral cooperation between Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), says Datuk Salleh Said Keruak. The Sabah Umno treasurer said that with GRS opting to forge an electoral pact with Pakatan in the coming state election, Barisan will leave it to Pakatan to manage the cooperation among the three parties. ALSO READ: Sabah polls: GRS and Pakatan to continue electoral pact "For Barisan, we chose to work with Pakatan early on... (as) we are the foundation of the unity government at the federal level. So this cooperation is a logical and responsible continuation," the former chief minister said in a Facebook post on Monday (July 28). "How Pakatan manages cooperation with Barisan and GRS is none of our business. "What is important for Barisan is sincere cooperation, and our focus is to strengthen the party on the ground. "We want to win and help our coalition partners. We are not a two-faced player. "Our approach is clear – honest, open, and for the good of the people of Sabah." GRS and Sabah Barisan were partners in the 2020 state election. ALSO READ: GRS partners surprised over Hajiji's GRS-PH pact announcement They have refused to work with each other since Sabah Barisan withdrew its support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor in January 2023. Sabah Pakatan filled the vacuum and kept Hajiji's state government afloat. Salleh said the GRS decision to forge an electoral pact with Pakatan reflected that it has chosen to work with national parties and reject the "all local" approach adopted in Sarawak. "The GRS decision to choose Pakatan as a partner for the Sabah election deserves respect. "It ultimately rejected the solo path and chose to work with national parties. Of course, it has (its reasons)... and the people will judge," Salleh added. "We in Barisan have been consistent from the beginning that a coalition with Pakatan is the best approach for stability," he said. ALSO READ: Former leader's opposition to Borneo bloc prompted GRS to back unity government, Hajiji says His comments followed Hajiji's confirmation on Sunday (July 27) that an electoral pact with Pakatan had been confirmed and they were just ironing out the details. There has been no immediate official reaction by GRS coalition partners to Hajiji's announcement. Salleh believes that GRS chose Pakatan as a partner because it wanted to work with the Prime Minister's party to ensure good relations with the Federal Government. "This is in line with the need to guarantee political stability and development for Sabah," he said. Over the last few weeks, Sabah Barisan and Pakatan have reached several agreements on seats to be contested in their negotiations in Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.

Zaid snubbed for turncoat tendency after owing up to UMNO for showing up at ‘Turun Anwar' rally

FORMER de facto law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has found himself trolled by Madani government backers that he is unwanted by UMNO after he 'proudly' admitted having attended Saturday's (July 26) Turun Anwar rally. This came about after UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated the likelihood of an internal probe on party members who attended the PAS-inspired event at Dataran Merdeka. According to Zahid who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, UMNO as a component of the unity alliance firmly adheres to the principle of supporting and strengthening the Madani government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'I want to see first who is present. My team and I will ask why they are present. We want to know the reason for their presence there,' he had told a media conference after officiating the Raub Division UMNO representative meeting in Raub, Pahang yesterday (July 27). This statement promoted the opposition-slant Zaid who became an UMNO member 'by default' while he served as the defence attorney momentarily for incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak to owe up without any second thought. 'Well, let me make it easy for them: I was there. Not only that; I gave speeches too,' he penned on X. Heard that Umno is now checking on members who took part in the 26 July Rally. Well, let me make it easy for them: I was there. Not only that; I gave speeches too. In his self-defence, Zaid further stressed that he did not lie nor 'betray anyone' by virtue of joining the rally. 'I didn't promise not to work with DAP or Anwar, only to turn around and do the opposite,' he cynically justified. 'I didn't participate in the charade about the hidden addendum. If speaking the truth is now a punishable offence in UMNO, then perhaps they should look at themselves in the mirror before judging others.' This is when brickbats were hurled at Zaid for assuming that he is an asset in UMNO when the actual fact is that 'you're irrelevant'. 'Do you seriously think UMNO need you?' wondered one commenter. 'I wanted to tell you to grow up but can you? You're like an 'old turkey' with tough meat that can't be softened even if boiled with papaya roots. LOL.' Others chided him by criticising him for his frog-like nature of 'leaping from one party to another' while 'playing all sides'. As such, his presence or absence from UMNO is immaterial if his heart lies in the struggle of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. The bottom line, as some commenters aptly put it, is for Zaid who had also been previously associated with DAP, KITA (Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air) and PKR to have the decency to just quit UMNO if he feels that he cannot longer toe the party's line. – July 28, 2025 Main image credit: Wan Ahmad Fayhsal/Facebook

Salleh: GRS' polls partnership with PH reflects desire to maintain close ties with Anwar's administration

Salleh noted that GRS' decision to cooperate with PH likely reflects a strategic desire to maintain close ties with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's administration. — Bernama photo KOTA KINABALU (July 28): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah's (GRS) decision to partner with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming state election should be respected, said Umno Sabah treasurer Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak. The former Sabah chief minister said in a Facebook post that GRS had made a conscious decision not to contest the election alone but instead align with national political forces, rejecting what he described as the 'Sarawak formula' of distancing from federal parties. 'GRS has ultimately rejected going solo and opted to align with national parties. Undoubtedly, they have their own reasons, and the people will be the judge,' he said. Salleh noted that GRS' decision to cooperate with PH likely reflects a strategic desire to maintain close ties with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's administration. 'Let us give them the benefit of the doubt, perhaps they want to work with the Prime Minister's party, which is PH, and to ensure strong ties with the federal government. This aligns with the need to ensure political stability and continued development for Sabah,' he said. He stressed that Barisan Nasional (BN), of which Umno is a component, had been consistent in its position from the beginning. 'We in BN have been clear from the start: forming a coalition with PH is the best approach for political stability. 'Our decision was made early on, based on the fact that both PH and BN form the foundation of the Unity Government at the federal level. This cooperation is a logical and responsible continuation of that partnership,' he explained. Salleh said how PH manages its relationship with both GRS and BN is not a concern for the coalition. 'What matters to us in BN is sincerity in partnership, and our focus remains on strengthening our party on the ground. We want to win and help our coalition partners,' he said. He also emphasised BN's political approach, saying: 'We do not play a double game. Our approach is clear, honest, transparent, and always for the good of the people of Sabah.'
