Melaka needs RM25mil to resolve street lighting problem

The Star29-04-2025

MELAKA: The Melaka government needs approximately RM25mil to address the issue of streetlights in the state.
State Public Works, Infrastructure, Public Facilities and Transport Committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said the allocation received this year was only RM3.5mil, involving RM3mil from the federal government and RM500,000 from the state government.
"The amount is still a long way from solving the street lighting problem on state roads, as it does not include village roads," he told the State Assembly here on Tuesday (April 29).
He was responding to a question by Tuminah Kadi@Mohd Hashim (BN-Pantai Kundor) on the allocation for street lighting.
Hameed said Melaka also received RM1.7mil under the Malaysian Road Records Information (Marris) for the installation of street lighting in village areas this year, with the Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah, and Jasin districts each receiving RM500,000, and RM200,000 allocated to the State Public Works Department. – Bernama

Soil depression detected at Jalan Batu Kawan in Penang, authorities close off affected section, begin urgent repairs, says state exco

BATU KAWAN, June 6 — A soil depression was detected yesterday at P149 Jalan Batu Kawan, specifically at the junction connecting the road to a newly completed bridge, according to Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari. He said the exact cause of the incident is still under investigation by the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and the project contractor. However, immediate remedial measures were taken by PDC upon receiving public complaints. 'PDC promptly carried out premix patching to raise the road level and installed warning signs to prevent any untoward incidents involving road users,' he told Bernama when contacted. He said the contractor will proceed with excavation work to determine the root cause of the soil depression before implementing permanent repair measures, which will involve the use of additional materials such as geotextile, basal reinforcement, and other necessary strengthening methods. 'These actions are essential to ensure long-term road stability and to prevent future soil depression. All repair costs would be borne by the contractor because the project is still within the defects liability period (DLP,' he said. Meanwhile, Assistant Director of the Fire and Rescue Operations Division of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) in Penang, John Sagun Francis, said a team of seven members from the Batu Kawan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was sent to the location after the department received a call regarding the soil depression. On arrival, the team found that a soil depression had occurred, but there were no victims involved. Immediate action was taken to close off the affected area and ensure no vehicles were allowed on the compromised section of the road,' he said. The incident gained public attention yesterday after a social media post went viral, showing images of the soil depression along the main road near the Batu Kawan bridge. The post also highlighted visible cracks on the concrete structure dividing the road. Firefighters were seen at the location, placing safety cones and taking precautionary measures to secure the area for road users. — Bernama

Chatter builds over possible return to Umno by Khairy

PETALING JAYA: Speculation is mounting over the possible return of former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, as political observers remain divided on whether his comeback would reinvigorate or disrupt the party's current course. Some believe it could help modernise Umno's image and appeal, while others warn of internal resistance and lingering distrust among party members. Senior Fellow at the Nusantara Academy of Strategic Research, Prof Dr Azmi Hassan described the rumours as a strategic move, likely initiated by his supporters, to test party sentiment and assess the response of grassroots. 'The speculation may be a calculated effort from his camp to gauge public and internal reactions,' Azmi told theSun in a WhatsApp reply. Azmi said many grassroots members still view Khairy and others who have left or been suspended from the party as disloyal for their past criticisms of the party leadership. 'For me, the grassroots reaction to their return is negative because they are seen as having betrayed the party. While they were outside, they attacked the leadership. Even among the Umno supreme council members, there is reluctance to accept their return.' Khairy remains a popular figure, particularly among urban and younger voters, said Azmi, but he questioned whether the popularity could translate into electoral success for Umno and its coalition partner, Barisan Nasional (BN). 'Support from outside the party is important, but the question is whether that can be turned into actual votes and renewed confidence in Umno and BN.' Political commentator Shahbudin Husin said Khairy is not the only figure whose return is being discussed. He said former Umno vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, who was suspended in early 2023 along with several others for breaching party discipline, also has strong backing. 'There are rumours that Khairy is planning a return, but there are also other former leaders such as Hishammuddin who deserve to be reinstated. Their return could help strengthen Umno as they command significant following.' However, he emphasised that any return must come with meaningful reforms, urging the party to hold internal elections before the 16th General Election (GE16). 'If Umno is serious about change, there must be party elections before GE16. If Hishammuddin and Khairy return but hold no positions, it would signal no real shift to the public. 'Bringing them back should not stop at just the two. All suspended or expelled leaders should be considered, followed by a proper mandate through elections.' Universiti Sains Malaysia political analyst Prof Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian believes that Khairy and Hishammuddin have proven themselves through their past contributions to Umno and the country. 'Both leaders are seen as bringing progressive leadership. They are credible and respected across the political divide. 'Urban voters, professionals and fence-sitters may see them as role models, thanks to their articulate messaging and appeal to the youth.' Sivamurugan stressed that the current leadership must be reassured that any return is based on loyalty and a shared vision, not personal ambition. Khairy, the former MP for Rembau and former health minister, was sacked from Umno in January 2023, while Hishammuddin, the Sembrong MP, was suspended for breaching party discipline. Umno performed poorly in the last general election, winning only 27 parliamentary seats. Khairy narrowly lost the Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat, a Pakatan Harapan stronghold, to then newly appointed PKR vice-president R. Ramanan in a seven-way contest.

RM162bil in projects bring over 53,000 jobs to Johor

Lee says Johor is attracting more high value-added activities such as semiconductors, petrochemicals and data centres. INVESTMENT projects have created more than 53,000 job opportunities in Johor between 2022 and 2024. State investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said Johor attracted 1,761 projects between 2022 and 2024, with a total committed investment value of RM162.2bil. These projects resulted in the creation of 16,762 jobs in 2022, 19,053 jobs in 2023 and 17,949 jobs in 2024, bringing the three-year total to 53,764 direct jobs. 'These figures reflect only the investment sector and exclude jobs in construction, logistics, business services and retail,' he said at the state assembly sitting. He was responding to a question from Fauziah Misri (BN-Penawar), who asked how the state ensured that investments benefitted locals in terms of employment and economic development. Lee said the state government was committed to ensuring that all incoming investments generate quality, high-skilled job opportunities for Johoreans while also boosting the state's economy. 'With our competitive cost structure and strong infrastructure, Johor is now attracting more high value-added activities such as semiconductors, petrochemicals and data centres. 'Data centre investments by global companies such as Microsoft and ByteDance have also helped position Johor as the largest data centre hub in Malaysia. 'This has opened up opportunities too for skilled jobs in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector.' Lee said high-impact investments also created spillover effects across professional service sectors such as logistics, banking, auditing, legal and consulting. 'For example, Mercedes-Benz has opened a regional logistics centre in Senai to serve as a parts distribution hub for the Asia-Pacific region. 'This facility does not only provide direct jobs in logistics and supply chain management, but also increases demand for support services including transport, warehousing and others.' He said Johor's tech sector has also attracted investments from companies like Wiwynn and Supermicro, which have set up manufacturing plants to support growing demand for data centres. 'These investments provide not only manufacturing jobs but also roles in research and development, engineering and project management,' he added.
