Melaka needs RM25mil to resolve street lighting problem
State Public Works, Infrastructure, Public Facilities and Transport Committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said the allocation received this year was only RM3.5mil, involving RM3mil from the federal government and RM500,000 from the state government.
"The amount is still a long way from solving the street lighting problem on state roads, as it does not include village roads," he told the State Assembly here on Tuesday (April 29).
He was responding to a question by Tuminah Kadi@Mohd Hashim (BN-Pantai Kundor) on the allocation for street lighting.
Hameed said Melaka also received RM1.7mil under the Malaysian Road Records Information (Marris) for the installation of street lighting in village areas this year, with the Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah, and Jasin districts each receiving RM500,000, and RM200,000 allocated to the State Public Works Department. – Bernama

Shahelmey weighs GRS ticket after BN door ‘closes'
Published on: Tuesday, August 19, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 19, 2025 By: Nora Mahpar, FMT Text Size: Last Sunday, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor hinted that Shahelmey Yahya might contest under the GRS banner to defend his Tanjung Keramat state seat in the next Sabah polls. Kuala Lumpur: Sabah deputy chief minister Shahelmey Yahya is weighing the possibility of contesting under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, with his chances of standing again as a Barisan Nasional candidate possibly over. Shahelmey, who currently holds the Tanjung Keramat seat, said his decision would ultimately hinge on feedback from voters in the constituency. Advertisement 'I need to listen to the people in the area because they are the ones who will be voting. There is also the local machinery whose views I must consider. 'If the feedback is convincing, then we will make a decision,' he told FMT when met at the Parliament building. GRS chairman Hajiji Noor had earlier expressed confidence that Shahelmey could defend the seat under the coalition's banner. Shahelmey first won Tanjung Keramat on a BN ticket in 2020. However, his ties with BN have soured since March 2023, when Umno suspended him for six years for refusing to support the party's move to topple Hajiji. The rift widened last year after Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin named Sabah Umno election director Jeffrey Noh as the coalition's candidate for Tanjung Keramat, effectively sidelining Shahelmey. '(It's as if) the door has closed,' Shahelmey said of his BN prospects. He said there had been no discussions with Sabah BN or coalition chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding his candidacy. Shahelmey said his decision on whether to contest on a GRS ticket was further complicated by his position as Umno's Putatan MP. Under the anti-hopping law, he risks losing his parliamentary seat if he contests under a party other than BN as he won Putatan on a BN ticket in the 15th general election. 'That matter is quite technical. I will make a decision later,' he said, without elaborating. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MCMC develops child protection rules under Online Safety Act 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is drafting a subsidiary instrument under the Online Safety Act 2025 (Act 866) to enhance child protection and online risk management. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that the MCMC is exploring mandatory AI-generated content labelling for service providers. 'This initiative aims to help users identify misleading or manipulated content, reducing the spread of harmful information online,' he said. Service providers must also submit an online safety plan to ensure compliance with Act 866. Fahmi addressed the issue in response to a question from Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli (BN-Jempol) regarding AI-generated content regulations. He emphasised that Act 866 was enacted to strengthen online safety and regulate harmful material. An Online Safety Committee will be formed to advise the MCMC on digital safety matters. The committee will be led by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) and include licensed service providers. Fahmi also revealed that MCMC requested the removal of 439 deepfake-related fraudulent social media posts this year. Of these, 417 were successfully taken down, with Facebook being the primary source. - Bernama

Over 475mil e-invoices issued as rollout expands, says Deputy Finance Minister
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 475mil e-invoices have been issued as of August 18 this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said over 98,000 taxpayers have issued e-invoices. 'These include not only those mandated under Phases 1 to 3, but also voluntary contributors under Phases 4 and 5,' she said during question time on Tuesday (August 19). She said about 37,000 taxpayers have voluntarily contributed under Phases 4 and 5. However, Lim said the additional revenue for the government can only be determined once the system is fully implemented next year. "Our main objective is to improve business efficiency. Once Phase 5 is rolled out, we will have a clearer picture," she said. Lim said small businesses can also consolidate their e-invoices monthly. She was responding to Azli Yusof (PH–Shah Alam), who asked about the e-invoicing rollout and its impact on government revenue. Lim added that numerous engagements have been held with stakeholders. "That is why the rollout is in phases. Engagement is ongoing," she said. The e-invoicing initiative began in August 2024 for companies with annual turnover above RM100mil. The second phase started on Jan 1 of this year for businesses with annual sales between RM25mil and RM100mil. The third phase of full implementation was initially set for July 1, covering all businesses. However, in June, the Inland Revenue Board announced that taxpayers with annual income or sales below RM500,000 are exempt. Implementation for those earning between RM1mil and RM5mil is postponed to January 1, 2026, while for those earning up to RM1mil it is postponed to July 1, 2026.
