Emmerdale actress reveals she was mugged on her birthday and says ‘it's all gone'

The Sun12-05-2025

EMMERDALE actress Gemma Oaten has revealed she was mugged on her birthday, just hours after enjoying an evening out with her husband in London.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, the 40-year-old shared a series of photos from the special night out, before explaining to fans how the day had taken an unexpected turn.
Gemma wrote: 'OK, so let's get the crappy stuff out of the way – life threw a little curve ball on my birthday yesterday and I had my phone stolen about 2 hours after these photos were taken. Bank cards, everything gone.
'So apologize if I haven't been responding to text/WhatsApp/social media – I have no phone. I guess I was mugged – but I am safe and no harm came to me, it was all very quick.'
Despite the incident, Gemma chose to focus on the positive aspects of her day, praising her friend Richard, who joined her for the evening.
She added: 'Now onto the good stuff – I was so blown away by all my birthday messages, thank you!
"And I had the most amazing day pampering myself before a gorgeous evening with one of my best friends in the world @richardlamberth who took me to where we first met at Groucho all those years ago, before having a seafood feast to die for at @randallandaubin.'
Looking ahead to a planned holiday, Gemma admitted the day after the mugging was 'a bit stressful' as she tried to replace essentials and access funds.
The star continued: 'Today has been a bit stressful, as I go on holiday tomorrow – trying to get money out at the bank, an oyster card, find a way to get hold of my train tickets – but I have done it.
"And although I don't have a phone – I only feel blessed and grateful for all the kindness I have received today as I have ran around Fulham, trying to suss it all out.
"Sometimes, we can't control the uncontrolables, that's life. BUT, we can chose how we react.'
Gemma - who played Gemma played Rachel Breckle in the ITV soap - ended her post by thanking Richard for his support and assuring fans she'd briefly check in before her holiday.

She wrote: 'I won't be able to reply to anyone and apologies if you have messaged my phone over the last 20 hours – it is blocked and until my e-sim is activated, I will be a little quiet.
"However I will bob on tomorrow before I sign off social media for my holibobs! WHOOP!
"Always take the blessings. Thank you Richard for keeping me calm and safe and getting me home last night – I am so lucky to have you.
"Life has so many postives, you just have to keep making sure you are open to seeing them. You matter, G xxx."
It's been a turbulent times for the soap star, with a biscuit company boss recently sacked for slapping Gemma's bum at an awards bash, a tribunal heard.
Steve Jones claimed she had given him permission for the on-stage slap.
But a colleague who later saw a video of the incident said it had upset her and referred to the #Metoo movement.
Jones, who was head of health and safety at McVitie's owner Pladis, was then fired for 'violating morality and decency'.
An employment tribunal was told that the incident happened as he volunteered to go on stage to accept a gong won by the company.
It was being presented by an actress — not identified at the hearing — and Jones stood next to her and slapped her bottom.
The tribunal heard that although Jones had not asked for consent, he told her he had slapped another 'well-known woman's' bum on stage, so the actress said 'go for it'.
Hundreds of people had attended the International Safety Awards — organised by the British Safety Council — which took place at the InterContinental Hotel in London' s Park Lane on June 7 last year.
A junior colleague of Jones who was at the event — but who did not see the slap — said she was shown a video of the incident and was upset by it.
Jones was reported to HR and had a disciplinary hearing the following month for 'physical conduct pertaining to sexual harassment '.
He said he had 'nothing to apologise' for and that even the actress 'felt it was appropriate in the context of the evening'.
But Jones was sacked over the 'wholly inappropriate' behaviour.
He was told that entering into a conversation with the presenter before receiving the award was 'ill-judged and had the potential to put any female presenter in a very uncomfortable position'.
Gemma, who was in Emmerdale from 2011 to 2015, was not interviewed on the matter.
But in a social media post the day after the bash, she told of the 'naughtiness' of the event and said she had a 'bloody good giggle'.
Jones had joined Pladia in 2001 as head of health, safety, environment and security.
He appealed against his sacking but it was dismissed. He then took it to the tribunal, alleging unfair dismissal.
Jones said the views of the actress were 'highly relevant' and that she 'did not feel harassed, was not distressed, and made no complaint'.
But the central London tribunal found his conduct had upset colleagues and he was fairly dismissed.
The Sun approached Gemma for comment at the time.

Is 'bad attitude' useful? Fans on Cunha signing

We asked for your views on Matheus Cunha signing for Manchester are some of your comments:Nick: I'm happy with this. We're creating, but not scoring, so getting someone in who has experience scoring in the Premier League can only be a good I think it is a fantastic signing in this struggling Manchester United era. I see hope because he can play in so many positions in Ruben Amorim's 3-4-3/3-4-2-1 and United need goals, that's all they Cunha has the skills but does he have the temperament for the most 'under the microscope' and 'under pressure' club currently in the world? I hope so but so much needs to change around him to get the best from him. Let's hope Amorim's plan gets the support from the boardroom. I'm still holding my At last; the right player, at the right price and at the right age. What could go wrong?Karl: Definitely a step in the right direction. His stats say he has everything we've been missing - awareness, speed, balance, a finishing edge and above all, confidence. Can't wait to see how he works alongside the likes of Amad, Fernandes and Yes, he's renowned for his 'bad attitude' but that's just because he wants to win, which is an attitude sadly lacking in quite a few of our current squad. I seem to recall a certain Mr Cantona was slated for his attitude when we signed him!

Chelsea 'begin talks with £50m-rated Borussia Dortmund star' - as they look to further bolster attack ahead of Club World Cup

Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Borussia Dortmund 's Jamie Gittens as they begin talks over a potential £50million move for the winger. Enzo Maresca 's side are looking to bolster their attack as they prepare for life in the Champions League next season, for the first time in three seasons. Mail Sport understands that Liam Delap has already undergone the first part of his medical ahead of joining the Blues from Ipswich Town for £30m. And now they have set their sights on bringing in a winger to accompany their new frontman. Chelsea first reported their interest in Gittens, 20, when they enquired about his services in January, and according to the Telegraph, they are now ready to act. The England Under 21s starlet is believed to have a release clause around the £50m mark, with many of European football's elite clubs circling. With Jadon Sancho's future at Chelsea still up in the air - with the club debating whether to turn on their obligation to buy the Manchester United loanee for £25m - the Gittens deal is taking their full attention. The west London side are believed to be pushing for a deal to be completed quickly due to both their and Dortmund's participation in the FIFA Club World Cup, which begins on June 14. Gittens would be able to play for the Blues in the competition, should he sign, due to not being selected in Lee Carsley's Young Lions squad as they seek to retain the Under 21s Euros in Slovakia this summer. The Club World Cup is seen as a priority over the youth international tournament, so Gittens was left out by Carsley due to Dortmund's participation. The winger is the next star off of the Bundesliga production line, following in the footsteps of both Sancho and Jude Bellingham by shining in Dortmund. After breaking through in the 2023-24 campaign, Gittens truly began to shine in the last 12 months, scoring 12 goals and bagging five assists in all competitions last season. He also made history in the Champions League, becoming the youngest English player to score in the tournament when he found the net against 15-time winners Real Madrid, aged just 20 and 75 days.

Two Chelsea players in Williams' underrated XI of the season

As the dust settles on this Premier League season, we asked former England international Fara Williams for her underrated XI for the selected two players who have represented Chelsea this CucurellaCucurella has gone from a player fans really didn't like when he first joined to a cult hero. He has played almost every game this season and stepped up a level in terms of his energy, desire and winning mentality have had such a positive impact on the young team around him and even at 26 he has taken responsibility as a senior player. Because of the way he presents himself on the pitch he is very easy to dislike which is probably why he doesn't get the credit he deserves as one of the league's best ChalobahIt would have been easy for Chalobah to shut off when deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea at the start of the season and shipped off to Crystal Palace on loan, but he kept his head down, worked hard, and represented the Eagles with when recalled to Chelsea, he didn't fuss and was a reliable performer when selected. He is maybe not your modern-day centre-back who steps into the play, but he defends solidly and wins his put in seven or eight out of 10 performances every week despite difficult situations and an uncertain future is admirable and he deserves his chance in Thomas Tuchel's England Williams was speaking to BBC Sport's Nat Hayward
