First announce second think: Congress slams govt over problems in NMMS app
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said FAST is the self-declared motto of the Modi government and it actually stands for - "First Announce Second Think".
In May 2022, the Modi government introduced the National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) app in MGNREGA for digital verification of attendance and works, and ever since this was done the Congress had been highlighting the operational problems with NMMS and how it was damaging the letter and spirit of MGNREGA, Ramesh said in a statement.
"Now in a notification issued on July 8th 2025 the Union Ministry of Rural Development has finally acknowledged the various problems associated with the NMMS. It was clear from the beginning that uploading photographs from NREGA worksites would end up excluding genuine workers whose photos could not be uploaded due to connectivity issues," he said.
Further, the NMMS cannot stop "fake workers" appearing on the muster rolls, as fake workers can go twice a day to be photographed, get paid without working for a minute, he pointed out.
"What has come to light -- that fake and random photos are being uploaded --? only demonstrating the absolute uselessness of the NMMS," Ramesh said.
However, the Modi government, post its acknowledgment of the issue, has identified solutions that are worse than the problem, he said.
The NMMS photos will now also be backed by physical verification by officers in-charge, he said, adding this proposed solution is going to waste the precious time of NREGA functionaries, from top to bottom.
Either they can verify photos, as is being mandated by the latest order, or they can perform their regular duties, he argued.
Ramesh pointed out that the Congress has consistently demanded several key changes to the Union government's implementation of MGNREGA, and the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj has echoed several of these, including immediate withdrawal of the unworkable and counterproductive NMMS model based on photo uploads and reaffirmation of task-based payments which is the essence of MGNREGA.
He said, amidst a decade-long crisis of stagnant wages, an increase in MGNREGA wages - as envisioned in the Congress Nyay Patra for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections - assumes renewed importance.
MGNREGA wages must rise to reach ₹400 per day, Ramesh asserted.
The Aadhar Based Payment Bridge Systems (ABPS) must not be made mandatory, he added.
Wages must be paid within the statutory period of 15 days and any delay in payment must be compensated, Ramesh said.
In April this year, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj tabled a report in Parliament, recommending increasing the number of days of work under the scheme to 150 from the current 100, and also suggested that wages be increased to at least Rs 400 per day.
The panel, which has been expressing concern over stagnation in allocation to the flagship rural employment scheme, has also stressed on social audits to ensure its proper implementation.

Conspiracy to keep 'Bahujans' out of education: Rahul Gandhi slams govt on vacant university posts
NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday attacked the Modi government over vacant reserved posts for SCs, STs and OBCs in central universities and said this is not just negligence but a "well-planned conspiracy" to keep 'Bahujans' out of education, research and policies. The leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha demanded that all such vacant posts be filled immediately and 'Bahujans' be given their rights, not "Manuwadi boycott". In a post on X in Hindi, Gandhi said the figures presented by the Modi government in Parliament are solid proof of 'Bahujans' being deprived of their rights and the presence of "institutional Manuism". In central universities, 83 per cent of the posts of professor for STs, 80 per cent for OBCs and 64 per cent for SCs have been "deliberately" kept vacant, he claimed. At the same time, 65 per cent of the posts of assistant professor for STs, 69 per cent for OBCs and 51 per cent for SCs have also been left vacant, the Congress leader charged. "This is not just negligence, it is a well-planned conspiracy to keep Bahujans out of education, research and policies," Gandhi said.

Gujarat Govt Tells Teachers to Serve Food at Temple Fair, Withdraws Order After Criticism
New Delhi: The Gujarat government has been criticised for ordering 48 schoolteachers in Rajkot district to serve food instead of teaching students. After the controversial move resulted in criticism including the opposition Congress training its guns on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state, the order was scrapped, reported New Indian Express. The order was issued by the deputy Collector of Jasdan with 48 schoolteachers from Jasdan taluka being ordered to serve food to VVIPs during the upcoming Shravan month festival at the Ghela Somnath temple in Rajkot district. According to the circular directed at primary teachers from over 10 local schools, the teachers had to manage food arrangements during the religious fair. Gujarat is already grappling with an alarming shortage of 12,500 teachers and 700 principals across the state. Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi slammed the the government, calling it a 'repeated insult to educators.' He added that teachers in Gujarat have been roped into more than 30 non-teaching roles over the years, including for crowd mobilisation for political events to pest control. Following the uproar over the order, Jasdan's provincial officer withdrew the circular and stated that teachers may still choose to volunteer at the temple fair but not under compulsion. Gujarat education minister Kuber Dindor admitted the error and clarified that the Education Department had instructed local authorities to scrap the directive. He said that teachers should only be assigned essential national duties like elections or voter list revisions and not temple hospitality.

Modi becomes India's second-longest serving PM in uninterrupted tenure, surpasses Indira Gandhi
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday became India's second-longest serving prime minister in consecutive terms, completing 4,078 uninterrupted days in office — surpassing the continuous tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi, who held office from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977, had served 4,077 days in her first uninterrupted term. Modi, 74, assumed office on May 26, 2014, and was sworn in for a historic third consecutive term in June 2024 after the Lok Sabha elections. With this milestone, he trails only Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, who served for 16 years and 286 days from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964. Modi is now the first and only non-Congress prime minister to complete two full terms and secure a third successive mandate. He also holds the distinction of being the first PM born in independent India and remains the longest-serving prime minister from a non-Congress party. Before becoming Prime Minister, Modi served as the chief minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 — the longest tenure for a CM in the state's history. His national political journey began with the BJP's landslide victory in the 2014 general elections, where the party secured 272 Lok Sabha seats on its own. Under his leadership, the BJP improved its tally to 303 in 2019. Although it fell short of an outright majority in the 2024 elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party and formed the government with the support of its NDA allies. Modi is also the only non-Congress leader to have led a party to a single-party majority in the Lok Sabha — a feat he achieved twice, in 2014 and 2019. Indira Gandhi returned to power for a second term from January 14, 1980 until her assassination on October 31, 1984. However, her unbroken tenure during her first term had remained second only to Nehru — until Modi's latest record.
