EastEnders' Nicola Mitchell star slams ageism on TV
Newcomer Laura Doddington has proved quite a hit on Albert Square. Here, she talks nearly quitting acting before bagging her EastEnders role - and the struggle for 'women of a certain age'
Laura Doddington has quickly become a soap favourite after her bombshell entrance as Nicola Mitchell in EastEnders just a couple of months ago. Since then, her character has been embroiled in a murder and now a long-ago affair has been uncovered, which has blown up into major drama.
With the makings of a true soap matriarch, it's no surprise Laura, 44, found herself nominated for Best Newcomer at the British Soap Awards last month. But before bagging her dream role, the actress of 22 years, she tells OK!, considered changing careers, thinking her big break would never come.
'If I'm honest with you, the industry is hard at the moment,' says Laura, speaking to new prior to the awards ceremony. 'Before this audition came through, I'd been looking at retraining to do something else. I've got a young kid – and that makes you think about their future and stability for them.
'I cut my son's hair and I'm reasonably good at it, so I thought that might be an option. I was in Prime Suspect when I was in my twenties and The Midwich Cuckoos, but they weren't massive parts. I was beginning to think it might not be possible to have that lead role.'
Cambridge-born Laura also had small roles in Doctors, Holby City a nd Casualty, as well as frequent theatre work, before getting the breakthrough she wanted so much. She landed the part of the latest feisty Mitchell woman, Nicola, nine months ago. 'I've been a jobbing actor for 22 years and over that time you deal with really amazing highs, but also lows – missing out on jobs, not even getting seen for jobs,' Laura says.
'So when I got the part, even though I'd been in it before for a fleeting moment, I was ecstatic. I'm really lucky that [former executive producer] Chris Clenshaw took a punt on a jobbing actor and gave me the chance. This came at the right time. It feels incredible.'
Laura says the audition process was an emotional rollercoaster and she feared she'd missed out on the chance of a lifetime."'I didn't hear anything for four weeks,' she recalls. 'I thought it had gone to someone else. Unfortunately, in this industry, when you get to over the age of about 35 and you haven't made a name for yourself, the interesting roles sort of start drying up.
"We stop being interested in women when they get over a certain age, which is bonkers, and that's why I love soaps and continuing dramas as they champion individuals of all ages and put characters at the heart of storytelling.' Eventually the call came through to say that Laura had got the part. 'When I found out, there were a lot of tears and a lot of expletives,' she says, laughing.
Laura admits she was full of nerves when she stepped out in Albert Square for her first scenes as Nicola. But she says Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale and was her mentor, was on hand to help. 'He was on set on my first day in case I had any questions,' she says.
'It was his day off but he came in, bless him. Everyone on the show is so welcoming and kind. It was daunting doing scenes with soap legends as colleagues. Seeing Steve [McFadden], Letitia [Dean] – it was just like, 'Oh my God.' But they are amazing. And the boys – Roland, Elijah and Lewis – they were awesome. We gelled so quickly.'
The new Mitchells – Teddy (Roland Manookian) and his sons Harry (Elijah Holloway) and Barney (Lewis Bridgeman) – arrived in Walford in June 2024, causing a stir when it was revealed they were Stevie Mitchell's secret family. Mum Nicola joined later, having spent time behind bars for injecting unlicensed filler.
Laura says it can be intense filming dramatic scenes, so the cast often try to lighten the mood in between takes. 'The boys and I often burst into song between takes,' she reveals. 'It's hilarious when you belt out a tune and no one else joins in and you're like, 'That song was too random.'
'I'm high energy, a bit like a cocker spaniel most of the time. Then I realise that I have to portray the character and I'll take a minute to focus and get back into Nicola's head.' Although very different to her villainous character, Laura says they do share one quality. 'I relate to her protectiveness of her children,' she says.
Letting her young son watch her EastEnders entrance last year was the first and last episode he's seen. 'He turned to me and he said, 'Mummy, you're not very nice in this, are you?' I went, 'No I'm not, lovely.' Then he asked, 'Do you mind if I don't watch it?' In my head I was going, 'Thank God – I mean, you were never going to watch it!''
With a murder, an affair and a huge family secret now exposed, is there a future for Nicola on the soap? 'There's always redemption,' Laura jokes. 'The knock-on effect of a secret of 16 years coming out would bring drama into anyone's life. In Nicola and the boys' case I think there's a journey to be had in that. It'll be interesting to see what she will do, how she repairs it with Barney.'
Hoping to be an Albert Square favourite for years to come, Laura says, 'I don't want to go yet! But in the end that's not up to me. Everything is finite. I will just enjoy every moment that I'm here.'

This Morning star in tears over daughter's emotional milestone
Rochelle Humes talks telly, renewing her vows with her JLS star husband Marvin and opens up movingly about why she 'cries every year' when it comes to her three kids Between hosting top TV shows such as This Morning and The Hit List , parenting her three children and running a business, you'd think that Rochelle Humes would run the risk of being totally strung out. However, as OK! sitS down for an exclusive interview with the 36-year-old, she appears effortlessly chilled out. Alongside her flourishing career, Rochelle is known for her relationship with her husband, JLS singer and fellow TV star Marvin Humes, who she married back in 2012. Often sharing sweet posts to one another on social media and even working together, it's clear that they are still smitten with each other. So what's their secret? Chalking it down to mutual respect and time out for themselves amid the chaos, Rochelle explains, 'We both love each other and love our family but we also love what we do, and that's something we've both always been at peace with.' She adds reflectively, 'We've always met each other in that vein. We also make sure that we shine but don't shine at the same time, which is important to have. So, he'll be on tour with JLS at the end of the year and I'll be very grounded and there to support him.'We make sure that when we each have separate things, we support each other at that time. I think it's just communication really, there's not a big secret, I think it's just that we've got respect for each other. That's the bottom line.' Three years ago, Rochelle and Marvin, 40, decided to renew their vows, and it's something she says they've decided to make a bit of a tradition. 'When we got married, we said we'd do it every 10 years!' she smiles. 'I think it's a fun thing to do, I'm trying to make all of my friends do the same thing. You reach a certain age and it's like, people have all got married already, so it's a bit... dead in the wedding area! I want our friends to do it every 10 years too, so we have some love to celebrate! 'It's sad when they go, 'I remember there was a time when I was like, 'Oh my God, another wedding to go to!' and now I really miss it.' I'm trying to get my brother to propose to his girlfriend. I don't want him to lose her,' she admits. There may not be many weddings to go to, but one thing she's recently celebrated is daughter Alaia-May's 12th birthday. Alaia-May is the eldest of Rochelle and Marvin's brood, which includes Valentina, eight, and four-year-old son Blake. 'I can't believe [she is 12]. I cry every year because I'm like, 'I just don't know where the years are going,' but I'm also just so proud of the little woman that she's becoming,' says Rochelle of her eldest. She continues, 'It's a weird thing to think that I've got a 12-year-old. I'm also so proud of how we're raising her. Like, we managed to get one of them to 12, so we're doing alright! We're winging it, but what we're doing is working so far,' she says. The family often share insights into their holidays on social media, with dreamy breaks in Dubai and the Maldives. But Rochelle likes to give the kids some traditional British memories, too. "At the minute, the kids have just been at my mum's caravan for a few days. So, I dread to think what treats I'm coming back to – they've just been a little bit feral for a while,' she says, with an eye roll. 'It's like the nostalgia of holidays that I remember when I was younger, which is nice for them to have. I think my mum loves to do it all again, too, there's definitely something about doing it with your grandchildren and not your children, because you're not in a rush. You have all of the benefits and you can give them back!' Not only will Rochelle have three kids on a high from caravan life, but she says, she'll have piles of washing, too. Luckily, the star has partnered with Dylon Detergent, which she hails as a staple in her house. 'I'm honestly such a big fan. I have my favourite scent and the smell is gorgeous. It really has made a difference to my gym wear and to the kids' school uniforms, too. You know how they just go faded? 'We've just got back from the Maldives for Easter, which was brilliant. I tested Dylon to revive a dress that I'd bought a few years before and had lost its way a little bit. It was great.' And what are their plans with the kids for summer? 'You get the first week of the school holidays out of the way and there's nothing left to do,' she says. 'They love coming to work with me anyway. My daughters have realised there's a gifting cupboard in my office which has body sprays and creams and everything, so they have a one-track mind!' Rochelle is the official brand ambassador for Dylon Detergent, the laundry detergent that cleans and restores clothes to look and feellike new. Available at major retailers.

Hollyoaks confirms dark Clare Devine twist as teens are chilled to the bone
Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Monday's (June 9) episode that is now available to view on Channel 4 streaming. The episode in question will air on E4 on at 7pm. Clare Devine (Gemma Bissix) proved that she's just as evil as ever, delivering a bone-chilling threat to Dillon Ray (Nathaniel Dass), Frankie Osborne (Isabelle Smith) and Vicky Grant (Anya Lawrence). The legendary soap villain, who staged a historic comeback 'from the dead' earlier this month, tracked the teens down to 67 Christleton Terrace, determined to ensure they keep shtum about the details of their trafficking ordeal. Walking into the property in her signature red high heels, Clare removed pictures of Misbah Maalik (Harvey Virdi), Nancy Osborne (Jessica Fox) and Donny Clark (Louis Emerick) from her handbag, informing the trio that she has 'eyes and ears' everywhere. Frankie, Dillon and Vicky reeled in shock as Clare ordered them to keep quiet about her and Grace Black's (Tamara Wall) roles in their exploitation nightmare, otherwise she would make them – and their families – 'disappear.' The unsettling threat came just hours after Clare revealed to the village that she's alive and well – despite the fact that everyone who dwells in Hollyoaks believed her to be dead. It seems that living in the shadows has hardened Clare further, with the character having been pulling much of the strings of the trafficking operation. And her ruthlessness is something that Grace is set to find out the hard way, with Clare hellbent on revenge after she discovers her sister gave Tori back to the Blakes. Discussing what's to come, actress Gemma Bissix told Metro: 'Grace says she let Tori go to the shops on her own and the Blakes have just snatched her. Emmerdale reveals tragic Cain update in ITVX streaming release
The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn't aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX. Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) continued to face Tracy Shankley's (Amy Walsh) angry wrath as a new week began in Emmerdale. Last week, Cain discovered that his son Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter) had been murdered and understandably, he struggled to process the news. Prior to his death, Nate had a fight with Cain over the rumour he was sleeping with Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb). He was then killed by John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), but his family believed that he had gone to Shetland. Cain eventually gave up on Nate, accepting that he no longer wanted anything to do with his family in the village and little girl Frankie. Of course, learning the truth about his son has made Cain feel utterly terrible – and matters have been made even worse due to Tracy accusing him of killing Nate. John was questioned by the detective in tonight's episode, but it wasn't because he had been accused of murder. He managed to back up Cain's story from Nate's final day in the village, revealing he went to the hospital immediately after the barn fire to see Moira, who had been caught up in the ordeal. More Trending It added fuel to the theory that Cain was innocent but it wasn't enough to sway Tracy. Throughout the entire instalment, she remained convinced that Cain killed his own son. That afternoon, John found Cain at the garage attempting to fix a bike. The beloved character broke down and admitted that it feels like he can't grieve for Nate because of Tracy and the constant police interference. John asserted that the police would be off Cain's back soon, and then spied Frankie's playhouse in the garden of Tracy's. An idea forming, John will soon plant Nate's phone in Frankie's playhouse. The police will search the premises and find the phone, therefore taking the heat off Cain and putting it onto Tracy instead.
