Affordable Hybrid Car of the Year 2025: MG3

Auto Express8 hours ago
MG blew us away last year when it entered the dwindling supermini market with a car that was not only compelling in isolation, but really stood out when it came to performance, efficiency and value for money. Now, 12 months later, the MG3 is our Affordable Hybrid winner for the second year on the trot. Advertisement - Article continues below
While most hybrid small cars pair a breathless petrol engine with an equally weedy electric motor, the MG3 combines its power sources to produce a healthy 192bhp. The result is an impressive 0-62mph time of just eight seconds, making this a hatchback that feels peppy both in town and on the open road. Throw in an accomplished chassis and plenty of grip, and you've got a car that will comfortably show a Renault Clio or Toyota Yaris a clean pair of heels.
Yet what matters most in this area of the market, and the reason we rate the MG3 so highly, is its efficiency. The MG's hybrid power comes mainly from its e-motor, which means most of the time it feels like an electric car. We love this style of driving, and it works wonders for fuel economy – our tests saw close to 50mpg without much effort at all, and considerably more with a lighter right foot. Throw in a reasonably roomy cabin, strong equipment list and a seven-year warranty that beats the cover offered by many competitors – plus a price tag that undercuts all of its main rivals – and you're left with a set of ingredients that help make the MG3 our favourite Affordable Hybrid car of the Year for 2025. You've two specs to choose from when it comes to picking your MG3: SE or Trophy. The difference is around £2,000, but it pales into insignificance if you're paying on a monthly finance deal. We'd fork out the extra to have the Trophy's 360-degree cameras and other equipment.
While the affordable end of the market is understandably geared towards small cars, Dacia once again bucks the trend by offering space and practicality at an attractive price point. The Duster Hybrid isn't as affordable as the pure-petrol version, but it trumps its simpler sibling when it comes to running costs and driveability. We love it.
No one has as much experience mixing petrol and electric quite like Toyota. The Yaris may be small, but that doesn't mean it isn't a mighty-fine affordable hybrid car. Super-efficient, good to drive and spacious enough for kids in the back, the Yaris finishes a close second to the excellent MG.

I Drove the 2025 Toyota Camry XLE. Here's My Brutally Honest Review

Is Vanilla Still Good? For decades, the Camry has been the automotive equivalent of vanilla ice cream: dependable, universally liked, and maybe a little too predictable. It's the car your sensible friend buys and drives for 200,000 miles without a single complaint. For 2025, Toyota has something new in store. The ninth-generation Camry is now exclusively a hybrid. That's right, every single one, from the base LE model to the top trim XSE, every model has a battery pack. It's a move that signals exactly where Toyota thinks the future of the family sedan is headed. So, is this new, electrified Camry still the undisputed champion of the sensible? The Heart of the Matter: Engineering and Driving Dynamics Under the hood of every 2025 Camry is Toyota's fifth-generation hybrid system, pairing a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors. If you choose front-wheel drive, you get a combined 225 horsepower. Opt for the all-wheel-drive version (a first for the hybrid Camry and a huge plus for those of us in the snow belt), a third electric motor on the rear axle bumps that figure to an adequate 232 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque. Source: Toyota All power is routed through an electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT). CVTs are not ideal from a driving experience perspective and often receive a bad rap from enthusiasts, for good reason. They can drone on and create that dreaded 'rubber-band' effect where the engine revs seem disconnected from your actual speed. But Toyota has been doing this hybrid-eCVT dance for a long, long time, and it shows. In normal city driving, the power delivery is smooth and seamless. The electric motors provide instant torque from a standstill, making the Camry feel brisk off the line. Once you hit 35 MPH, that power dies off, but the initial boost is nice to have, especially in the city, and we all know half of NYC's Uber drivers will have one at some point. When you ask for more power to merge onto the highway, the gas engine kicks in without a fuss. It's not going to thrill you, but it's competent enough. The car is built on the TNGA-K platform, which is just a fancy way of saying it has a solid foundation that gives it a lower center of gravity. This isn't a sports car, but it feels planted and secure, not floaty like some of its predecessors. However, the steering is somewhat vague, lacks feel, and is particularly numb, even more than you'd expect from a family car. Source: Toyota Exterior Design: The Camry Gets Streamlined Toyota updated the Camry with a modern face, dominated by slim, hammerhead-style LED headlights and a large lower grille. Now, the XLE trim I was in is the 'business casual' version. It swaps the sporty honeycomb grille of the SE/XSE models for a classier dark line design and adds just enough chrome around the windows to make it look like it has its life together. It's less 'look at me' and more 'I have a respectable 401k.' It all comes together to make a decently good-looking car that doesn't scream for attention but earns a second glance. Source: Toyota Step Inside: An Office You Can Live With Jump inside the Camry XLE, and the first impression is one of space and comfort. It's a pleasant place to be for the price. The seats are spacious, supportive, and heated. After a couple of hours behind the wheel, I had zero complaints. Toyota clearly focused on the touchpoints; the steering wheel feels good in your hands, and the places you rest your arms are covered in a soft material. If you go looking for it, you'll find harder plastics on the lower door panels and center console, a gentle reminder that this is still a value-focused vehicle at its core. Source: Toyota The dashboard design is… interesting. A 12.3-inch touchscreen and a matching 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster on the XLE dominate it. The layout is clean and functional, but there's a unique, almost amusing curvature to the passenger-side dash. It's an inoffensive and slightly quirky design choice in an otherwise very straightforward cabin. Overall, the interior is spacious, comfortable, and easy to get along with every day. There's nothing revolutionary here, but in a daily driver, sometimes 'nothing wrong' is exactly what you want. Source: Toyota Pricing and Fuel Economy: The Sensible Part Okay, let's get down to the numbers, because this is where the Camry has always made its case. The XLE FWD starts at $33,700, and the AWD version will cost you an additional $1,525. That's a pretty compelling price for a well-equipped midsize sedan with AWD. But the real headline is the fuel economy. The FWD model is projected to get an impressive 47 MPG combined. The AWD version only takes a tiny hit, clocking in at 46 MPG combined. These are fantastic numbers for a car of this size and comfort level. This is the payoff for going all-in on the hybrid powertrain. It's a car that will be genuinely cheap to run, and in today's world, that's a massive selling point. Tech and Safety: Your Digital Co-Pilot Thankfully, Toyota has gone wireless with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with the 12.3-inch center screen projecting all the info. More importantly, every single Camry comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes a pre-collision system that can detect pedestrians, a lane departure alert with steering assist, and a proactive driving assist feature that can subtly brake into curves or help maintain a safe distance from the car ahead. Personally, I found the proactive driving assist to be somewhat annoying, but for the right driver, it could be helpful, and it's easily deactivated. Source: Toyota What's Uniquely Camry? Axing the gas-only four-cylinder and the beloved V6 is a gutsy move, but one that makes sense for the Camry buyer, offering extreme efficiency with an affordable price point. Another interesting tidbit is the name itself, as 'Camry' is derived from the Japanese word 'kanmuri,' meaning 'crown,' which connects it to Toyota's legacy of royal-themed sedan names, such as the Crown and Corona. Source: Toyota Final Thoughts So, what's the verdict on the all-hybrid 2025 Toyota Camry? It's a competent, comfortable, and efficient car. It's an easy car to drive and an even easier car to live with every day. The move to a hybrid-only lineup makes perfect sense for the vast majority of buyers in this segment. It delivers a decent ride, quick off-the-line power around town, and, most importantly, phenomenal fuel economy. But I'll be honest, I'll miss the V6. The previous-generation Camry TRD with that 301-horsepower V6 was a fun-to-drive sedan. It had a personality that this new hybrid just can't replicate. That said, the Camry knows its mission. It's here to be the best possible daily driver for the most people. And by that measure, the 2025 Camry XLE is an undeniable success. It's still the king of the sensible, but now it's a king with a very efficient, electrified crown. About the Author Kyle Edward View Profile

Ferrari unveils new 'Amalfi' petrol coupe ahead of EV launch

MILAN, July 1 (Reuters) - Ferrari ( opens new tab revealed its new Amalfi coupe on Tuesday as the luxury sportscar maker mixes petrol and hybrid models in its range while preparing for the launch of its first fully electric vehicle. The eight-cylinder, 3.85-litre Amalfi replaces and upgrades the successful 2019 Roma in the entry segment of Ferrari's range and comes just two months after the launch of the 296 Speciale hybrid car and its convertible version. Ferrari will begin unveiling its first EV in October this year in a three-stage process culminating in a world premiere next spring. However, a second EV model that would aim for wider sales is not expected before 2028, because of a substantial lack of demand for high-performance luxury EVs, sources have told Reuters. The Amalfi has similar dimensions to the Roma, differing in its exterior look from its predecessor mainly for its redesigned front. Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Enrico Galliera said the Amalfi was a true Ferrari sportscar in terms of high performance, technology and driving pleasure, but it also had a "very elegant soul". "It allows for a different driving experience, less extreme but equally fun, it's suitable for a wide range of driving conditions," he said. The Amalfi is purely powered by an internal combustion engine which delivers 640 horsepower for a top speed of 320 kilometres per hour. It features a rear integrated active spoiler, contributing to the car's stability at high speed, the company said. Like the Roma, the Amalfi is a 2+ coupe, meaning it has two small rear seats. The starting price for the new model is set at 240,000 euros ($281,000), with first deliveries to clients scheduled in the first quarter of next year, starting from Europe. Deliveries to U.S. clients are expected to start three to six months later, at a higher price due to import tariffs. Orders for the Amalfi are being opened on Tuesday but Ferrari's dealers already received lots of expressions of interest from clients, Galliera said. The Roma coupe has gone out of production, while its retractable-top version, that was introduced in 2023, currently remains in Ferrari's range. ($1 = 0.8527 euros)

Missed out on a Range Rover Sport SV? It's now been permanently added to the line-up

The Range Rover Sport SV has been made a permanent member of JLR's model line-up. The super-SUV arrived in 2024 and was sold in limited numbers as part of Edition One and Edition Two batches. JLR has now added two variants to the Range Rover Sport line-up: a standard SV and a more hardcore SV Black edition. Both are powered by a BMW-derived 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8, putting out 626bhp and 553 lb ft of torque. In the standard SV, this is good for a 0-60mph time of just 3.8sec and all the way to a limited top speed of 165mph. The Black cuts the sprint time by 0.2sec and can continue to 180mph. That extra acceleration is down to the Black's use of carbonfibre throughout, such as the bonnet. Underneath, both versions get the same 6D Dynamics suspension technology that made its debut on the limited-run model and is now featured on the Land Rover Defender Octa. It works to improve handling and performance by effectively eliminating body roll. Both SV variants wear 23in alloy wheels and, unlike previously, can now be kitted with an array of optional extras. As per its name, the Black is painted in Narvik Black and all elements, from the brake calipers to the SV badges, are finished in Narvik Gloss Black. Inside, Ebony Windsor leather is joined by more black detailing. The SV is available to buy now, priced from £139,995. The £154,975 Black will be made available to order later this year.
