Karnataka government, opposition lock horns over externment order

Hindustan Times3 days ago

The BJP and the government are locked in a political tussle over the proposed externment of some prominent right-wing leaders. While home minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday refuted allegations of communal bias by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), state BJP president BY Vijayendra accused the government of 'turning the police into a political weapon'.
Dakshina Kannnada police on Monday claimed the move to extern 36 people from the district, including prominent local leaders from right-wing organisations and political parties, as a precautionary measure to curb communal unrest and repeated criminal activity.
'The individuals shortlisted have a record of repeated communal offences, and the proposal for externment has been forwarded to the deputy commissioner for further legal process,' a senior police officer said on Tuesday, adding that the orders, if approved, would bar these individuals from entering the district for a period ranging from six months to a year.
Those facing deportation include Mahesh Shetty Timarodi, president of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike in Beltangady, Sangh Parivar member Bharat Kumdelu, BJP leader Arun Kumar Puthila and leaders from the Muslim community as well. Authorities have cited their repeated involvement in activities that threaten public peace and law and order.
Defending the state's actions, denying any communal bias, Parameshwara said: 'Communal harmony has been disrupted. There is a growing sense of hatred and jealousy among communities, and this should not happen. It is our collective desire that our society always lives with a spirit of brotherhood.'
'The government will not wash its hands of the situation—we have a responsibility to maintain peace and uphold law and order in the state. From that perspective, we will act without hesitation. Caste and religion make no difference under the law. In the eyes of the law, every religion and caste is equal,' he further said.
'There is a misconception that the police are only targeting Hindus and not acting against Muslims. That belief is far from the truth. Just yesterday (on Monday), someone filed a complaint and action was taken immediately. We don't act randomly or without basis,' he added.
While police insist the externment proposals are based on legal grounds and past records, the move has drawn a sharp reaction from the BJP. On Tuesday, BJP state president BY Vijayendra accused the Congress government of 'turning the police into a political weapon'. 'I discussed this issue with national leaders last night (on Monday). Today, our MPs and MLAs will meet senior police officials,' he said.
Responding to the action against right-wing leaders, he said, 'Once upon a time, kings ruled this country. We've heard of feudal lords back then. The current Congress government is running the state like those feudal lords. The Siddaramaiah-led government is running a Tughlaq-style administration that suppresses democracy.'
He alleged the Congress government was attempting to distract from its governance failures by targeting Hindu activists. 'Look at the shameful behaviour of this Congress government in recent months. At a time when people are expressing outrage over the lack of development in the state, the government is trying to cover up its failures through such incidents. It is also conspiring to insult Hindu activists,' he claimed.
In response, Parameshwara stressed that action taken was not taken arbitrarily or influenced by public pressure. 'One cannot simply go to someone's house at night, create a fight, and expect the police to issue a notice and let them off. Even if someone is well-known in society, police cannot act arbitrarily against them. Action is taken based on what they have done.'
According to the police, formal externment proposals have been submitted under relevant provisions of the Karnataka Police Act, which allows the removal of habitual offenders from a region if their presence is considered prejudicial to public safety.
The measure, the officer added, is 'preventive in nature, aimed at deterring the recurrence of communal tension, especially in sensitive areas.'
The crackdown comes in the wake of a high-level meeting held on Monday in Mangaluru, where senior officials from the Dakshina Kannada district administration and the Kasargod police from Kerala discussed a coordinated strategy to tackle cross-border criminal activity and maintain communal harmony.
City police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said the discussions in the meeting focused on tracing absconding suspects in communal cases, controlling illegal cattle and sand transportation, and improving information-sharing systems to monitor individuals known to incite violence.
The meeting also addressed issues faced by students from Kerala studying in Dakshina Kannada.

‘Defence may be the wrong word': Shashi Tharoor points at ‘China factor' in Pakistan conflict

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Thursday that 81 percent of Pakistan's defence equipment comes from China, making the country an 'impossible factor' to ignore in the conflict with Islamabad. Tharoor, who is leading a parliamentary delegation to the US to expose Islamabad's nexus with terror after India's Operation Sindoor, said that New Delhi-Beijing relations were making good progress till last month's conflict with Pakistan. 'I'm not going to mince my words, but we are aware that China has immense stakes in Pakistan," PTI quoted Tharoor as telling the representatives of think tanks at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC. Tharoor pointed out that the largest single project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and that 81 percent of Pakistani defence equipment is from China. 'Defence may be the wrong word here. Offence in many ways……China is an absolutely impossible factor to ignore in what has been our confrontation with Pakistan,' Tharoor said. Shashi Tharoor told the gathering that India had seen good progress in its relationship with China after tensions since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes. The Thiruvananthapuram MP added that during Operation Sindoor and the conflict with Pakistan, New Delhi saw a very different China in terms of its support for Islamabad, even on the UN Security Council. 'We have no illusions about what the challenges are in our neighbourhood, but I want to remind you all that India has consistently chosen a path of keeping open channels of communication, even with our adversaries. We have tried as much as possible to focus on development, on growth, on trade. Our trade with China is still at record levels. It's not that we are adopting a posture of hostility, but we would be naive not to be aware of these other currents around,' he said. The UN Security Council, on April 25, issued a press statement on the 'terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir' after the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The statement had condemned the attack in "the strongest terms' but did not mention The Resistance Front as Pakistan, which is a non-permanent member of the council, got it removed with China's help. 'The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice,' the press statement had said. Shashi Tharoor was asked about the Chinese military equipment that Pakistan used in the conflict during an earlier interaction at the Council on Foreign Relations. The delegation head said that when India saw what the Pakistanis were attempting to do using Chinese technology, for instance, the 'kill chain' that the Chinese specialise in, where the radar, GPS, planes and missiles are all linked together and they react instantly, 'we simply did things in a different way. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to hit' 11 Pakistani airfields, and "we wouldn't have been able to breach the Chinese-supplied air defences. 'So it's clear that assessments were taking place while the fighting was happening, and we were recalibrating our strategies in order to end as effectively as we were able to end,' Tharoor said.

Happy Eid-ul-Adha 2025: Hindi Wishes, Shayari, Poems, Messages, Quotes, SMS and Status for family and friends

One of the most important festivals for Muslims across the world, Eid-ul-Adha is being celebrated in India today. Also called the Festival of Sacrifice or Bakrid, Eid-ul-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, which is the the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The festival commemorates the unwavering faith and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who was willing to sacrifice his own son Ismail (Ishmael) to obey Allah's command. Eid-ul-Adha is not only a time of celebration but also a time of charity, compassion, and reflection, reminding Muslims to care for the less fortunate and to strengthen their connection with Allah. The festival coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, which is an important part of Islam. Eid-ul-Adha: The story behind the festival Eid-ul-Adha holds deep spiritual significance in Islam and commemorates the profound story of faith, devotion, and obedience to Allah. Its roots trace back to the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), for his unwavering belief in Allah. According to Islamic tradition, Prophet Ibrahim had a recurring dream in which Allah commanded him to sacrifice his most beloved thing-- which was his son, Ismail (Ishmael). As a devoted servant of Allah, Ibrahim shared the vision with his son, who courageously agreed to comply with Allah's will. This moment is seen as the ultimate act of submission and faith to Allah, demonstrating both the prophet's and his son's devotion to Allah. But, just as Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son to fulfill the command, Allah intervened by sending the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) with a ram to be sacrificed in Ismail's place. This divine intervension saved Ismail and instead the ram was sacrificed-- as this was simply a test of faith and a powerful reminder that Allah values devotion and intention more than the physical act of sacrifice. This is also why the festival is called the Festival of Sacrifice. To honour this event, Muslims around the world observe Eid-ul-Adha by performing Qurbani— the ritual sacrifice of a permissible animal, such as a ram or goat (also called Bakri in Hindi; hence the festival is called Bakrid). The meat from the sacrifice is then divided into three equal parts: one is for the family, the second part is for relatives and friends, and the third part is for the poor and needy. The story of Eid-ul-Adha also coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage, performed annually in Mecca, which further commemorates Ibrahim's journey and submission to Allah. The festival teaches values of selflessness, compassion, and obedience, reminding Muslims to place their trust in Allah and care for those less fortunate. It's a time of reflection, prayer, and unity across the global Muslim community. Eid-ul-Adha: How is the festival celebrated PC: pixabay The celebration begins with a special congregational prayer held in open grounds or mosques. Devotees dress in their finest clothes and gather early in the morning to offer the Eid Salah (prayer), followed by a sermon emphasising the values of sacrifice, unity, and compassion. One of the key rituals of Eid-ul-Adha is the Qurbani, or the sacrifice of an animal such as a goat, ram or sheep. As mentioned earlier, this meat is then divided into three parts: one for the family, another for relatives and friends, and the third for the poor and needy. This act symbolises sharing blessings and caring for others. This is also a time for get-togethers with loved ones; and no festival is complete without fasting. Families also enjoy festive meals together, exchange gifts, and visit relatives and friends. Children often receive new clothes and Eidi (money or gifts) on this day. Throughout the festival, Muslims are encouraged to perform acts of charity, reflecting the festival's spirit of generosity, humility, and gratitude toward Allah's blessings. It is also a time to pause and remember Allah's teachings. Stopped war between India and Pakistan, it could have gone nuclear: Trump

US President Donald Trump on Friday again claimed credit for brokering a cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan, adding that he used trade as a weapon, leading to both countries stopping the war immediately. Trump pointed out that a war between India and Pakistan could have gone nuclear if the US had not intervened between the two countries. "You know, I did something that people don't talk about, and I don't talk about very much, but we solved a big problem, a nuclear problem potentially with India and with Pakistan. I spoke to Pakistan, I spoke to India, they have really great leaders, but they were going at it, and they could have gone at it nuclear," Trump told reporters on Air Force One . Lauding the leadership of India and Pakistan, Trump said, "Both nuclear countries, strong nuclear countries, and I talked about trade and said, 'We're not doing trade if you guys are going to be throwing bombs at each other." They both stopped, and I stopped that war immediately. It was going much further, and hopefully, it would not go to nuclear, but it might have gone to nuclear. In fact, it might have gone to nuclear in the next round, but we stopped it, and I'd like to commend the leaders of both countries, Pakistan and India." The issue stands as a bone of contention between the US and India, as on Friday, Aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Yury Ushakov , endorsed US President Donald Trump's claim of having brokered a cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan. Ushakov said that the India-Pakistan conflict was resolved with 'personal' involvement of US President Donald Trump, as was discussed in a telephonic conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Live Events "The Middle East was discussed, as well as the armed conflict between India and Pakistan, which has been halted with the personal involvement of President Trump," he said. Earlier, All-Party Delegation Leader and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that the delegation, during their meeting with US Vice President JD Vance , cleared the air around US President Donald Trump's claim of mediating between the India-Pakistan crisis. "The meeting with Vice President Vance was outstanding, very good, very clear. I think we made our position amply clear on this question of mediation, and Vice President Vance fully understood our points," he said. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for stopping hostilities between India and Pakistan after New Delhi's effective response to Islamabad's aggression following precision strikes on terror infrastructure. India had conducted Operation Sindoor early on May 7 and hit terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK in response to the Pahalgam terror attack . India effectively responded to subsequent Pakistan aggression and pounded its airbases. India and Pakistan agreed to stop military action following a call made by Pakistan's DGMO to his Indian counterpart.
