Kyogo sparks Birmingham City interrogation as Rennes insider breaks silence on Celtic hero's transfer rumours

Daily Record12 hours ago

Kygo is set to be a target for the EFL Championship big spenders
One of Kyogo's teammates at Rennes has been put on the spot about reports linking the Celtic hero with a move to his former club Birmingham City.
The Japanese frontman only arrived in Ligue 1 in a £10million switch from Parkhead back in January but has failed to make an impact and could well be shown the door this summer.

Premier League side Bournemouth have already been credited with an interest in the 30-year-old and would offer Kyogo a reunion with former Hoops pal Ryan Christie.

And they aren't the only English club to be lined with the ex Vissel Kobe attacker. Recent reports claim that Kyogo is a target for English Championship new boys Birmingham City, who are looking to make a splash in England's second tier next season under the ownership of US billionaire Tom Wagner and former NFL star Tom Brady.
A move to St Andrews would see Kyogo team up with Celtic and Japan pal Tomoki Iwata, who was a key cog in the side that romped to the League One title last season.
Another man who could have inside knowledge on Kyogo's potential transfer to Birmingham is Wales international Jordan James. The 20-year-old rose through the ranks with the Blues before landing a big £4million move to Rennes 12 months ago.
Brum diehards have taken to social media to quiz James on any news about his club teammate but the player has now responded by insisting he has heard nothing. He wrote on X: "Just to make it clear don't have a clue about (the) Kyogo rumours , what a legend though."
However, some supporters have questioned whether the 20-time Wales cap is hiding something.

One fan replied: "Nice bluff. We know what you're really saying."
While another wrote: "If you wanted to you (you) could find out..."
A third responded: "He is coming tho isn't he JJ"

Forgotten Celtic flop seals bumper transfer 18 months on from horror Parkhead stint as he ends nine-year spell with club

But while there was widespread success in Brendan Rodgers' first season back, not everything went exactly to plan. Luis Palma, Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm were among the big summer recruits. They'd enjoy more success in the January window with Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah the two big name arrivals. One player who left the Celts that month was Nat Phillips. The big defender's departure brought an end to a torrid loan spell from Liverpool. A defensive injury crisis towards the end of the summer transfer window saw Rodgers enter the market for centre-back cover. And on deadline day, Phillips arrived on a short-term loan deal from Liverpool. But Phillips, 28, would go on to endure a tough time of things at Celtic Park. His five-month stint ended with Phillips having made just eight appearances for the Hoops in all competitions. Phillips' last appearance was a particularly torrid one, as he netted an own goal in a 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in a game where he struggled badly. Celtic icon Peter Grant lifts the lid on former teammate Mo Johnston's shocking move to Rangers and reveals whether he's forgiven him for it Having made his senior debut for Liverpool in 2019, Phillips had failed to enjoy a regular run of first team football during his career. A defensive crisis at Anfield saw him play 20 times in the 2020/21 campaign, but he'd feature just a further eight times in all competitions for the club. He had short loan spells at Stuttgart and Bournemouth before moving on another loan to Cardiff immediately after his Celtic exit. Last season, Phillips finally enjoyed a campaign of regular action. That was during a season-long loan at Derby County, where he played 33 times to help the Rams maintain their Championship status. Now, he's on the move again and this time it's permanent. 3 Phillips has sealed a £3million move to West Brom on a three-year deal. The Baggies will be hoping to mount a promotion challenge under new boss Ryan Mason this coming season. They've been out of the top tier since being relegated in 2021. EXCLUSIVE Mark Clattenburg names 'nasty' Real Madrid star as his favourite defender of all time

Podcast All episodes Veteran Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg named a crafty Real Madrid legend as his favourite defender of all time on the latest episode of Whistleblowers. Whistleblowers is football's most original new podcast, hosted by Mark Clattenburg alongside Mail Sport Football Editor Ian Ladyman and broadcaster Gordon Smart. Debating which centre back was the greatest of all time, Clattenburg championed 'nasty' Portuguese defender Pepe. Over his 229 appearances for Real Madrid, Pepe won 15 major trophies but developed a notorious reputation with officials for his feisty tackling and behaviour. 'The best centre half I ever saw, even though he could be quite nasty, was Pepe,' the former official revealed. 'I watched him at Euro 2024, the last international tournament he played in, and he was incredible for his age at 41. 'What I liked about him was that he was an incredible pro – he achieved an awful lot. It was like the ball was glued to him, every ball that went in, he was at the other end of. Football's most original new podcast: Whistleblowers Hosted by Gordon Smart, with ex-referee Mark Clattenburg and Mail journalist Ian Ladyman, this isn't another safe roundtable of punditry. In the Champions League final in particular – but he was just an incredible centre half.' Pepe returned from a thigh injury to deliver a man-of-the-match performance in Portugal's Euro 2016 final victory over France, a match Clattenburg refereed. Clattenburg also officiated the defender during Real Madrid's 2016 Champions League final victory over Atlético Madrid. He controversially awarded a dubious penalty against Pepe for a tackle on former Liverpool forward Fernando Torres – which Atlético scored to level the match. When asked who he would pair with Pepe for the ultimate defensive partnership, Clattenburg suggested Vincent Kompany, arguing that the Belgian's ball-playing ability would complement the Portuguese defender's tenacity. 'I would want a shot stopper and a ball player', Clattenburg explained. 'I like Vincent Kompany alongside Pepe. Kompany had a great attitude, very different to Pepe.' While Clattenburg favoured more recent defenders, co-host Ian Ladyman delved further back in football history for his best defender, naming Liverpool stalwart Alan Hansen. Hansen won eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups, and four League Cups during his decade-plus spell at Liverpool, establishing himself as one of the most decorated centre-backs in English football history. Ladyman explained: 'You can't look past Alan Hansen. Literally, you couldn't get past him. 'What a footballer: wonderful reader of the game. He was brave, athletic, probably could have played in about seven positions. 'A great passer of the ball, a leader. He would always look pristine after a game because he would never have to go to ground – he was that good.' Alongside Hansen, Ladyman named a controversial Liverpool-Manchester United defensive pairing, choosing Nemanja Vidić for his physicality. Ladyman argued: 'If you have a stylish distributor of the ball, you need someone next to him who can scare the life out of people. 'I would go with Vidic – he could head the ball; he was a monster in the tackle.'
