Watching Viktor Gyokeres: Quick bursts, direct dribbling and a tactical challenge for Arteta

Watching Viktor Gyokeres: Quick bursts, direct dribbling and a tactical challenge for Arteta

New York Times3 days ago
The excitement at the Emirates was palpable as Arsenal returned from their pre-season tour of Asia. They lost 3-2 to Villarreal but after years of waiting for a centre-forward, supporters were ready to welcome their newest addition to the front line home.
Viktor Gyokeres was in town, making his first start in Arsenal colours. Greeted with applause when his name was announced just before kick-off, within a minute of play there was a glimpse of why that excitement was genuine and not just charity for a new face.

With the game barely settled, the Sweden international made a quick burst into the Villarreal penalty area. He was found, and despite having his cutback cleared, it seemed like a precursor of what could be expected later in the game and throughout the season.
Expectations are just that, though. The reality was that while those moments presented themselves on the odd occasion, there were other moments that showed this new marriage may need time to click.
'He's been with us only a week or so,' manager Mikel Arteta said post-match. 'But I already saw a lot of things and a lot of purpose, especially the way he was attacking in certain spaces.'
Arsenal's new dilemma on whether to stick or twist in attack was evident multiple times in the first half. There was one chance to break as goalkeeper David Raya threw the ball out to Myles Lewis-Skelly, who played it backwards instead of mounting an attack while Gyokeres was on the move.
Lewis-Skelly received a similar throw from Raya later in the half and was patient in his play once again. This time, however, Arsenal progressed play well and the left-back threaded a ball in behind for Gyokeres from a more advanced position. The audible anticipation around what Gyokeres would do turned into pleasant surprise as he weaved past two challenges before trying another cutback that needed a runner from midfield.
Last month, Coventry City captain and Arsenal academy player Ben Sheaf spoke to The Athletic about what it was like adapting to Gyokeres as a team-mate.
He spoke about how Coventry liked having the ball but would also play to the Sweden international's strengths, before adding: 'The way the season progressed, it swayed more towards, 'This is what he's doing, he's doing it well, let's keep doing it and get better at it'.
'I get what people are saying about how is he going to fit in, but people probably said the same thing about Erling Haaland when he went to (Manchester) City and that turned out quite well. I think under good managers and better players, Viktor's only going to get better and add more to his game anyway, so I wouldn't say that's a concern really.'

It was clear from Wednesday's performance that the 27-year-old's qualities can be of use to Arsenal, but finding the best way to accentuate them is now the big challenge.
Arsenal's collective performances this pre-season have been mixed. They were lax when defending set pieces in their 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, and Arteta admitted that against Villarreal they were 'naive, especially the way we have defended open spaces'.
Individually, Martin Zubimendi and Ethan Nwaneri have grown into their midfield roles — mainly because they have played with personality. Zubimendi's insistence on passing forward whenever he is on the pitch has been encouraging. Nwaneri has started three of the four pre-season games so far, and has impressed by going off-script with nutmegs, quick bursts of pace and reversed passes to move Arsenal up the pitch, while also showing a better understanding of his role out of possession against Villarreal.
Part of why individuals have shone and the collective have stuttered will come down to the make-up of Arteta's line-ups. Most have been a mix of players who would be considered regular starters and squad players.
For example, the midfield trio of Zubimendi, Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice have not yet started a game together. They have had minutes alongside one another, going back to the first pre-season game against Milan, but they have always been after substitutions have been made. It was also not until the final half-hour of the Villarreal game that Gabriel, who has played more than 200 games for Arsenal, made his return from a hamstring injury.
Even later in the match, Noni Madueke's inclusion on the left wing showed there are still elements of this new-look squad for Arteta to work out.
'Noni is very comfortable playing right and left,' the Arsenal manager added. 'We want to have inverted-footed players (left-footers playing off the right, for example). We can do that, and he's a real threat. But… (if) we want to find something else, playing with natural-footed, he's going to give us that solution. Today you've seen already a couple of balls that he put in the box, the pace and the quality he can deliver.'

With such important facets of Arteta's squad coming together at different times, the final game of pre-season against Athletic Club on Saturday should make for interesting viewing.
Arteta is hopeful Kai Havertz, Riccardo Calafiori and Leandro Trossard will return from their respective injuries. But will he finally manage to field an XI that resembles his strongest selection before the season gets under way at Old Trafford on August 17?

Joe Milton struggles in Cowboys preseason debut: ‘I just got to settle down early'

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — There have been moments throughout the first few weeks of training camp where Joe Milton has looked impressive. His rocket arm is what immediately gains attention. His athleticism and ability to extend plays has also been noticeable. That led to Milton being easily the top Dallas Cowboys player to watch entering Saturday's preseason opener. The results, however, were underwhelming. Advertisement Milton came out firing, throwing on his first six plays. Two completions, one yard, two punts. 'I just got to settle down early and just make a lot of those throws,' said Milton, who added that he would grade himself with a D or D-minus in Dallas' 31-21 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium. The plan was for Milton to play the entire game. The second-year player needs as many reps as possible as he is expected to be Dak Prescott's backup this season. Prescott, who is not expected to play in the preseason, was communicating with Milton throughout Saturday's game. Milton said the franchise QB's advice was to take completions and let the game come to him. One play that Milton would like to have back was a deep ball he threw to wide receiver Ryan Flournoy early in the second half. Flournoy had a chance to make the grab, but he was double-covered. Rams cornerback Cam Lampkin came down with the interception. The better option would have been throwing to rookie running back Phil Mafah underneath. Cam Lampkin said "gimme that" 🙌 @RamsNFL Stream on @NFLPlus — NFL (@NFL) August 10, 2025 'Second and (seven), he's got a checkdown in front of him,' Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said. 'Ultra-competitive, he was moving left, and he threw it up there. Now, he's trusting (Flournoy) in that situation to try to make a play. I think that's one of the things when Joe watches it that he'll be like, 'Yeah, I probably should have taken the checkdown. I got moved off the launch point.' 'That's why he needs to play. I do think he settled down. He found his rhythm late, started using his legs a little better. Terrific talent. Every rep he gets is going to help him become a great pro.' Milton finished the game completing 17 of 29 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a 68.6 passer rating. rivaldo reels in the tuddy!@Qbjayy7 x @rivaldo_f13 📺: #DALvsLAR on CBS11 📲: Stream on NFL+ — Dallas Cowboys (@dallascowboys) August 10, 2025 'Second quarter on I felt great,' Milton said. 'I think I need to calm down faster so I can start rolling in the first quarter. … I was very excited. I think that's what got me off my track. I feel like if I was able to go back out there again right now I'd be able to settle down faster and make those throws, for sure.' Advertisement In April, Dallas traded the New England Patriots a fifth-round pick for Milton and a seventh-round pick. Cooper Rush, who had been the Cowboys' backup the previous four seasons, signed with the Baltimore Ravens in March. The only other quarterback on the roster is Will Grier. As long as Milton is healthy, he will be the backup. Milton had an injury scare last week when the Cowboys practiced with the Rams as the thumb on his throwing hand hit the hand of a defender while completing a pass. He was pulled from that practice but was ready to go the next time the Cowboys were on the field. He exited Saturday's game late in the fourth quarter when a Rams defender hit his right elbow. Schottenheimer said initial tests showed the injury wasn't significant. Milton said he wanted to go back in the game. 'I feel good,' Milton said, 'just get a little treatment in the morning, I'll be all right.' One of the reasons the Cowboys made the deal to acquire Milton is because the sixth-round pick has so many of the tools that coaches and scouts covet. He only played in one game for the Patriots as a rookie, but he was impressive. Although he didn't play to that level Saturday, there is belief that with more in-game work, Milton can be an ideal backup and one day maybe more. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer: 'It's definitely not a storybook beginning, that's for sure. We just struggled.' Schottenheimer said he got choked up on his way to the stadium and again before kickoff while meeting with Jerry Jones. 'It's been a dream of mine to be in this… — Jon Machota (@jonmachota) August 10, 2025 'We need to throw more completions,' Schottenheimer said. 'He knows that. He had his fastball out today and there's times where you kind of throw a little bit of a changeup. … Part of staying in rhythm and part of me and Joe being on the same page, because I am the play caller, is executing the offense, taking things when it's there, when you get moved off a spot, check it down. Advertisement 'But what a great learning experience for Joe. The guy hasn't played a ton of football in real situations like this where he's getting hit. I'm not sure I loved him running the guy over on the sideline, but that kind of woke him up a little bit, got him going. I'm still learning him as well in terms of his play style.' Spot the pattern. 🤔 CR7 mocks Ballon d'Or award as fictitious, do you agree? Have your say!

Cristiano Ronaldo mocked the list of nominees for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, calling the award "fictitious." The Portuguese star was questioned in the mixed zone of the Estádio Algarve, after Al-Nassr's 4-0 win against Rio Ave last Thursday (7th), where he scored a hat-trick, about the presence of only three compatriots among the 30 nominees: João Neves, Vitinha, and Nuno Mendes. Cristiano Ronaldo competed for over a decade with Lionel Messi for the France Football honor, winning on five occasions (2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017), but was left out of the list for the third consecutive year. The Al-Nassr forward accumulated 35 goals and four assists in 41 games last season, and also helped Portugal win the Nations League for the second time. The French magazine revealed the contenders on Thursday (7th), recognizing the highlights of the 2024/25 season in European football. The ceremony to determine the winner will take place on September 22, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
