KUNAK: The plan to upgrade Kadazan Mostyn road from gravel to asphalt is now in the consultant appointment stage for design work. Deputy Chief Minister III and State Minister of Public Works, Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya, told Daily Express that construction is expected to begin by mid-2026 under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). Currently, only about 600 metres of the road is paved from the Simpang Empat roundabout, while the rest remains gravel. The road connects Kampung Mostyn Lama, Kampung Sri Bahagia, SK Mostyn, and the Sabah Electricity Main Intake Substation (PMU) in Kunak. Built in the post-independence era, the Kadazan Mostyn road was once a major route for transporting timber to Kunak port and for the district's abaca industry. Locals urged the government to upgrade the road, which now serves as a key access route to Kunak town and surrounding areas. The gravel road often suffers damage after heavy rain, especially in hilly and winding sections. It is currently maintained periodically by the District Public Works Department (JKR). * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM7 million allocated for drought mitigation in Malaysia's rice granaries

Published on: Tuesday, June 03, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 03, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Arthur said the focus will be on irrigation systems, the primary water source for crops. Bagan Serai: The government has allocated RM7 million for infrastructure upgrades to minimise drought impact on key rice production areas of Malaysia. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the focus will be on irrigation systems, the primary water source for crops. 'It is mainly to ensure that the water channels are functioning and can deliver water to the paddy plots, even if the water volume is slightly lower than usual. 'This is also one of our ways to minimise the potential negative effects on farmers' income, especially during drought seasons,' he said after officiating the 2025 Perak State-Level Agricultural Machinery and Equipment handover ceremony at Dewan Dato' Zainal Abidin Zin, here, today. Yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a statement, indicating that six areas in Peninsular Malaysia are now at Level 1 (alert) for three consecutive days, due to ongoing hot weather. The affected areas include Larut and Matang, Kuala Kangsar, and Perak Tengah in Perak, Machang and Kuala Krai in Kelantan, and Bandar Baharu in Kedah. In a separate matter, Arthur said that his ministry will strengthen collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies to combat cattle smuggling activities from Thailand, which are believed to threaten the country's food security. He said enforcement actions against individuals involved in unethical activities are under the jurisdiction of the respective state governments. 'Therefore, a comprehensive engagement session between state and federal governments is essential, to harmonise laws and prevent conflicts which could undermine the nation's food biosecurity,' he said. He added that one of the main factors contributing to smuggling activities, particularly during festive seasons, is the high demand for beef, coupled with the sector's self-sufficiency level (SSL) still falling short of the targeted benchmark. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 6.1-magnitude quake hits off Greek island of Crete: USGS

Published on: Thursday, May 22, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 22, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: The tremor 'occurred at a great depth and there is no particular reason for residents to worry,' Athanassios Ganas, general director of Research at the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, told the station. ATHENS: A 6.1-magnitude earthquake rattled the Greek islands of Crete and Santorini on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, with no major damage immediately reported. The strong quake struck 82 kilometres (51 miles) northeast of Crete's capital Heraklion at 0319 GMT at a depth of 68 kilometres (42 miles), the USGS said. AFP journalists said it was felt as far away as Athens and Egypt. State television ERT said many residents in the Cretan regions of Rethymno and Lasithi were woken by the quake just after 6:00 am and quickly exited their homes as a precaution. The tremor 'occurred at a great depth and there is no particular reason for residents to worry,' Athanassios Ganas, general director of Research at the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, told the station. State news agency ANA said fire department units in Crete had been placed on general alert, with vehicles patrolling to assess the situation. Advertisement The mayor of Heraklion, Alexis Kalokerinos, told ERT that there were no particular problems in the city and that closing schools would not be necessary. The quake struck just over a week after a 6.1-magnitude tremor hit near the island of Kasos near Crete, and was felt in the outlying area. The region, popular with tourists, has been hit with multiple tremors in recent months, prompting schools in Santorini and neighbouring islands to temporarily close. Thousands of earthquakes, mainly of low magnitude, have been recorded since January between the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Ios and Anafi in the Cyclades group southeast of the Greek mainland. They have not caused casualties or significant damage. Located where the African and Anatolian tectonic plates converge, the Aegean Sea is often hit by quakes. But the region had not experienced a phenomenon of such magnitude since records began in 1964, experts say. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
