A truck full of Tesla batteries flipped on I-80 — expect major delays

A semi-truck hauling a load of Tesla batteries overturned Monday morning on Interstate 80, grinding westbound traffic near the California-Nevada border to a crawl and triggering a complex cleanup operation. The incident occurred near Hirschdale Road, where the big rig veered off the shoulder and tipped onto its side, California Highway Patrol said. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. No injuries were reported. CHP confirmed that the truck was carrying Tesla electric vehicle batteries, which complicates recovery efforts due to the specialized handling required. A CHP Truckee division spokesperson noted that 'those Tesla batteries aren't something you just sweep up and call it a day.' Traffic along westbound I-80 along the Truckee River has been significantly affected, with commute times stretching to 40 minutes as of 9 a.m., according to mapping services. 'Westbound I-80 near Hirschdale is in low power mode after a big rig hauling Tesla batteries pulled over… on its side,' the CHP posted in a traffic alert. 'Expect delays, have patience, and maybe use this time to practice your best zen breathing.' There is no estimated time for the full reopening of the roadway.
