Pakistan warns India of 'robust response' to any misadventure

Listen to article The Foreign Office reaffirmed its stance that any misadventure by India would be met with a "robust posture" from Pakistan, emphasising the country's confidence in its defence capabilities. "Regarding any misadventure by India, our posture remains very robust. We are confident in our defence capabilities, and we hope India sees reason. However, if any attack or aggression occurs against Pakistan, we are ready to defend ourselves," said Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan during a weekly media briefing on Thursday. He stressed that Pakistan is prepared to respond to any aggression from India, pointing to the recent demonstration of military capability in the Marka-e-Haq, and expressed hope that India would recognise the futility of its aggressive stance, warning that such hegemonic impulses would lead nowhere. "We are confident about our capabilities, and we have demonstrated this in the recent Marka-e-Haq, which should be evident to everyone. The bottom line is that we remain ready, and we hope India will see that bellicosity and hegemonic impulses will not lead it anywhere," Khan stated. EU's von der Leyen hopes to ‘advance and rebalance' China ties at summit

BEIJING: European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday's EU-China summit is an opportunity to 'both advance and rebalance our relationship', hours before talks with Chinese leaders in Beijing. Von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa will raise thorny issues such as the trade imbalance, rare earths and Ukraine during meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. 'I'm convinced there can be a mutually beneficial cooperation,' von der Leyen wrote in an X post on Thursday, striking a more conciliatory tone after the weeks leading up to the summit were dominated by tit-for-tat trade disputes and hawkish rhetoric from European officials. State news agency Xinhua also appeared to downplay Beijing's rivalry with the 27-member bloc in a morning commentary, saying China is a 'critical partner' to Europe with a range of shared interests. 'As the international landscape grows increasingly fraught, the anniversary offers a timely reminder: China is a critical partner to Europe, not a systemic rival,' Xinhua wrote, pointing out common interests including trade, climate, and global governance. 'These areas of common ground should not be eclipsed by isolated points of friction,' it said. The EU defines China as a 'partner, competitor and systemic rival', which frames its strategic approach to China policy. Other issues, including electric vehicles, market access and Chinese industrial overcapacity, will also be raised by European leaders at the summit marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the EU and China. Expectations for the summit are low after weeks of escalating tensions and wrangling over the format of the summit, which was abruptly shortened from two days to one at Beijing's request. Trump may travel to China to meet Xi in 'not-too-distant future' 'Like all major economic players, China and the EU do not agree on everything. But disagreement does not equal confrontation,' Xinhua said, adding that the relationship needs more trust. The EU is likely to seal a trade deal with the United States that would result in a broad 15% tariff on EU exports to the U.S. after intense negotiations, avoiding a harsher 30% levy threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump.

PCJCCI to announce initiation of Chinese language courses

LAHORE: In a strategic move aimed at strengthening economic ties between Pakistan and China and enhancing job prospects for Pakistani workers, the Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) is soon planning to announce the initiation of Chinese language courses specifically tailored for skilled labourers and professionals seeking employment in China or with Chinese enterprises operating within Pakistan. Nazir Hussain, President PCJCCI stated during a think tank session held at PCJCCI secretariat yesterday that Pakistani skilled workers and labourers will become far more valuable to Chinese companies if they possess Chinese language proficiency. He further added that the workers who can communicate effectively in Chinese will have a competitive edge resulting in better job placement, performance, and growth opportunities. The initiative aims to bridge the communication gap between the Pakistani workforce and Chinese supervisors, engineers, and management teams. With a growing number of Chinese companies investing in Pakistan under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the ability to speak and understand Mandarin Chinese is becoming increasingly essential.
