STA to issue scheduling plan for private stage carriages
The authority discussed fixing a mandatory gap of five minutes between successive private stage carriage buses operating on the same route within municipal areas. In rural areas, the interval will be set at 10 minutes. The meeting also proposed introducing an auction process to resolve situations where multiple applicants seek the same time slot for stage carriage operations.
According to an STA officer, the revised intervals are aimed at easing congestion at bus stops, curbing aggressive driving, and reducing accident risks. The officer added that the notification will be issued soon, under the provisions of Rule 212(1) of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Rules.
The meeting also reviewed plans to implement a GPS-based geo-fencing and monitoring system across all public transport vehicles.
However, Hamsa Erikunnan, general secretary of the Kerala State Bus Operators Federation, criticised the five-minute gap proposal as impractical. 'As per the current permit the buses cannot keep the 5-minute time gap. The government may implement it when it issues new permits,' he said.

Goa govt says no new permits for ‘Rent a Cabs'
Panaji: Goa govt has directed the state transport authority (STA) to stop issuing new licences and permits under the Rent a Cab Scheme, 1989. Exercising powers under Section 67(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the notification issued on Tuesday, said the move aims at preventing overcrowding and enhancing road safety across the state. TOI had reported earlier this year that the decision to stop issuing fresh permits was taken on Feb 24, 2024, at a meeting of the state transport authority. Transport director Pravimal Abhishek had issued a public notice in March asking applicants not to submit any new applications for Rent a Cab permits as 'such applications will not be processed' at this stage. The public notice was issued a day after the directorate of transport announced a crackdown on unauthorised private vehicle operations as Rent a Cab services in Goa, wherein offenders will face a fine starting at Rs 10,000, with repeat violators subject to heavier penalties. Abhishek said that the authorities will impound private vehicles that are used for commercial purposes and may also lead to the cancellation of the vehicle registration. Enforcement agencies were asked to conduct regular checks and crack down on illegal Rent a Cab operations.

Cab ride in Chandigarh to get cheaper as UT rolls out new fares
In a surprising twist for daily commuters, the Chandigarh administration has rolled out a new fare structure that makes taxi rides more affordable, but auto rides more expensive. The revised rates, notified on Monday, also introduce standardized pricing for bike taxis, aiming to bring transparency and consistency across all modes of transport. The categories of vehicles have also been tweaked, bringing them in greater proximity to the categories adopted by mobile-based cab aggregators. From the earlier rate of ₹34 per km for AC taxis, the administration has now fixed the fare at ₹90 for the first kilometre and ₹25 per km for subsequent kilometres for AC/non-AC cabs with a four-plus-one seating capacity. The notification has also dropped the additional night charges and waiting charges. UT finance secretary and transport secretary, Diprava Lakra, said, "The fares have been notified after studying fares in several states. A formula that considers averages for fuel, wages, and maintenance costs has been used to fix the rates. Our aim is for the customer to get the maximum benefit." The last revision of the fares was done in 2022. When hiring an AC taxi, rates were fixed at ₹34/km, increased from ₹23/km. The fare for an ordinary auto was increased to ₹19/km in place of ₹16/km. "The most impacted category will be the commuters using mobile-based aggregator services. The notified charges are also applicable to the aggregators. Earlier, the fare charged by such operators varied widely," said a senior UT official. Recently, the administration notified the Chandigarh Administration Motor Vehicles Aggregators Rules, 2025. As per these rules, the aggregator shall not be permitted to charge more than the taxi fare fixed by the Chandigarh administration. The aggregator can charge a fare up to 20 per cent lower than the taxi fare fixed by the Chandigarh Administration under the intimation to the office of the State Transport Authority, UT Chandigarh. "The new rates will definitely bring transparency and will benefit both passengers and drivers. Earlier, aggregators fixed the rates on their whims. But the administration also has to ensure that this policy does not remain confined to paper. Big aggregator companies have ignored such policies in the past too. This time the State Transport Authority, Chandigarh must implement these orders on the ground with full force," said Vikram Singh Pundir, President, Tricity Cab Association.
