News1823-05-2025
Rodri made his first appearance for the Mancunian side in over 8 months in City's 3-1 win over Bournemouth and was given a raucous ovation when he was subbed on.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola expressed his delight on the return of Balon d'Or winner Rodri following a lengthy stint on the sideline due to a knee injury.
Rodri, who played a crucial part in helping City to the treble a couple of seasons ago, made his first appearance for the Mancunian side in over eight months and was given a raucous ovation when he was subbed on against Bournemouth in the side 3-1 win over the Cherries.
'We're really pleased he's back, really pleased for the reaction for our people to him, I'm pretty sure he's so pleased with that," Guardiola said.
The Spaniard, however, cautioned that it would be a while before the Spanish midfielder returned to his very best.
'There's still a long way to be the Rodri he was," the City gaffer added.
'Guess will be next season we start to be Rodri not in the way like we have seen before the injury where he played 70 games every three days," the 54-year-old said.

'It will take longer for that because the experience with this surgery is to be careful otherwise have muscular problems and this kind of stuff," Guardiola explained.

'But this is the first step for mind and knee still is not to see Rodri the way we know him," the Catalan genius stated.
City, who are placed third in the Premier League this season and locked in a five-way-battle for the remaining three UCL spots, need a draw against Fulham at the Craven Cottage on Sunday to secure their place in the upcoming edition of the UEFA Champions League.
Guardiola voiced ease with their qualification chances relying on their own performance instead of results from elsewhere.
'It's better. Arriving in the last games, it depends on you, it depends on us, yes it's better," the Spaniard said.
'We have to look at ourselves. We need one point to be in the Champions League next season and we have to go to win against a top side," he concluded.

Jannik Sinner rehires Umberto Ferrera post-doping row to begin US Open preparations

Jannik Sinner has reappointed his former fitness coach, Umberto Ferrara, as he begins preparations for the Cincinnati Open and the US Open. The decision, according to his team, was made in consultation with his management and signals a move towards re-establishing continuity in his training along with physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi, had been removed from Sinner's camp following an anti-doping investigation last year. Sinner had tested positive for clostebol, a banned substance, which was later traced back to an over-the-counter spray used by Naldi. The contamination, it was found, had occurred due to the use of a non-sterilised spray bottle that Ferrara had provided, which Naldi used on his hand before later handling Sinner's the situation, an independent tribunal ruled that Sinner bore no fault or negligence for the incident and accepted the explanation of inadvertent contamination. The Italian was handed a three-month ban by WADA but was cleared to return earlier this year. The ordeal, however, had taken its toll on the Italian star. During August, last year, Sinner revealed that he had lost trust in the team due to the mishandling of the situation. "Now, because of these mistakes, I'm not feeling confident to continue with them," Sinner had said. "I was struggling a lot in the last months. The only thing I need right now is some clean air."Ferrara has since worked with Matteo Berrettini and remained active within elite tennis circles. His reintroduction to Sinner's team suggests a repaired relationship and a belief that the duo can work together productively returned to action strongly this season. After a runner-up finish to Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros, he defeated the Spaniard to win his maiden Wimbledon title earlier this month. With a Grand Slam title under his belt and renewed momentum, Sinner will look to carry his form into the US hard-court season, where his previous best at the US Open was a quarterfinal finish in return of Ferrara could provide the stability and familiarity Sinner needs as he aims to build on his breakthrough year.- Ends

Real Madrid To Hand Kylian Mbappe Jersey No.10: Reports

Last Updated: It has been reported that the French World Cup-winner did not request a change in his jersey number, but the alteration was a decision of the Capital City giants. Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe is set to don the famous No.10 jersey in the upcoming season, as reports suggest that the La Liga side have opted to hand the iconic number, which has been left vacant following the departure of Croatian legend Luka Modric, to the Frenchman. Mbappe, who joined Los Blancos ahead of the 2024-25 season on a free transfer from PSG, wore the No.9 jersey in his debut season. It has been reported that the French World Cup-winner did not request a change in his jersey number, but the alteration was a decision of the Capital City giants. The move comes as a surprise as a horde of fans expected the club to hand Turkish midfielder Arda Guler the coveted No.10 jersey as it served to be more in line with the youngster's creative abilities, however, the club has decided to hand the prestigious number to the French superstar. The club have projected a record sale of the Mbappe jersey with the updated number, which could have been a deciding factor in the process. Mbappe managed to net 44 times across all competitions in his first season with the Madrid based club, but had to endure a trophyless season as arch-rivals Barcelona dominated the campaign. Real Madrid finished La Liga in second place, behind Barcelona, with 84 points from 38 outings as Mbappe netted 31 times in the Spanish top-flight. However, the Capital City side went without silverware in former coach Carlo Ancelotti's final season with the club before he left to take over the helm of the Brazilian national side. Former Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso, who led Bayer Leverkusen to their maiden Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season as the manager, has been appointed as the head coach of Los Blancos in an attempt to replace Ancelotti. Alonso's first assignment with Madrid was the revamped FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the USA, in which the Spanish heavyweights reached the semifinals before being ousted by UEFA Champions League holders PSG. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 10:13 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Atletico Madrid Rope In Marc Pubill, Jesus Areso Returns To Bilbao

Last Updated: The Madrid giants did not reveal how much they shelled out to rope in the 22-year-old defender Pubill from Almeria, while Osasuna's Areso will return to the Basque side Bilbao. Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid completed the signing of Marc Pubill from Almeria on Tuesday after missing out on Osasuna's Jesus Areso, who signed for Athletic Bilbao. 'Our club and Almeria have reached a deal, as long as Pubill passes his medical and signs his new contract," Atletico said in a statement. The Madrid giants did not reveal how much they shelled out to rope in the 22-year-old defender, who was previously linked to a switch to Premier League side Wolves to the tune of £13 million. Areso will return to the Basque side Athletic Bilbao after leaving their reserve side in 2021 to make the switch to Osasuna. The 26-year-old's return set the club back by 12 million euros, according to reports. 'Athletic and Osasuna have reached a deal for the transfer of the full-back Jesus Areso, who signs for the red-and-whites until June 30, 2031," said Bilbao. Athletic finished fourth in the previous season of the Spanish top-flight as Ernesto Valverde and Co. also managed to tie down Spanish star winger Nico Williams fending off interest from champions Barcelona.
