'I couldn't believe it then and I still can't now!' - Carragher on Istanbul 20 years later

BBC News24-05-2025
"I couldn't believe it then and I still can't believe it now!"Jamie Carragher laughs as he recalls Liverpool winning the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan in Istanbul.Reflecting on a final for the ages, Carragher told BBC Radio Merseyside what it was like to be part of the team that came back from three goals down to beat the Italian giants on penalties."We were a defensively strong team but after conceding a goal in the first minute the game plan goes out of the window," he said. "I don't think the team Rafael Benitez selected helped with that because we were far too open. He tried to put more offensive players on the pitch but that blew up in our face."Coming off at half-time, I remember thinking 'I don't want this to be five or six nil. I had no thought in my head that we could come back from it and lift the trophy. I don't think anyone in the dressing room did."What we wanted to do was stop it from being embarrassing and remembering this final for all of the wrong reasons."Most of us were shocked by what happened in the first-half and I don't remember us screaming or shouting at each other. I think we just knew what we were up against and that they had been too good for us."After Steven Gerrard scored we thought 'well the score line doesn't look too bad now,' but when it went to 3-2 you could sense the feeling was changing. AC Milan fans were getting more nervous and I felt like we could get the third goal because the momentum was with us."You could feel the energy in the crowd to go forward again and then Xabi Alonso scored."We hung on in extra-time. I had cramp and we were all getting tired, but we knew what was at stake and penalties would be a lottery."I can picture the lads' faces when we won and we were running from the line. I couldn't believe it then and I still can't believe it now!"Everyone was just in sheer disbelief. I was very lucky to be part of it."Listen to the full interview on BBC Sounds

Liverpool transfer news: Alisson makes 'hard' admission as Reds agree next summer move

Liverpool still have work to do with two weeks remaining of the transfer window and Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi the main names being speculated over possible Anfield arrivals The first Premier League match of the season is out of the way and just two more weeks of the transfer window remain. There's little sign of Liverpool slowing down their work. ‌ The Reds got their business underway at a rapid pace as they moved for Jeremie Frimpong and Trent Alexander-Arnold made his exit. Figures such as Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez followed as the spending ticked up towards £300million at Anfield. ‌ There have been plenty of stars heading in the opposite direction too. Arne Slot has waved goodbye to Jarell Quansah, Tyler Morton and Caoimhin Kelleher among others to bring in funds. ‌ And talk of Alexander Isak still remains after he missed Newcastle's opening match. Liverpool meanwhile will still feel they need a defender amid links to Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi. With that said, Mirror Football takes a look at the latest transfer news and rumours surrounding Anfield. Alisson admission Alisson believes that the difficulty of integrating so many new players in one go has been appreciated. Liverpool's transfer work has been lauded as they added talents such as Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerez, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike, but the Brazilian goalkeeper reckons it comes with a cost. "I think it's hard," Alisson told NBC. "Not many people talk about the changes we had in the team. Everybody's said how good our team is becoming with new players coming in, but nobody talks about the challenge that this is. It is a big challenge. "Last season we had the challenge of changing the manager, but you keep the players so you know each other, you just have to keep the same way of playing. The manager was smart in the way he did that and also implementing new things, it was easy for us to understand." ‌ "I think for them to play, for Jeremie, for Flo (Wirtz) and for Hugo, playing for the first time in the Premier League, you have the physicality that's a little bit different, the intensity," he added. "But they showed up so well, they played amazingly well. Of course with our help, but they showed that their qualities are at the standard of Liverpool FC.' Ben Doak nears move Liverpool and Bournemouth have agreed a £25m deal for Ben Doak - with only the formalities remaining after the clubs came to some harmony over a fee this weekend. The Scotland international was absent from the teams' Premier League season opener after a breakthrough in discussions and now a deal is all but done. The Cherries identified Doak as the ideal candidate to replace new Brentford star Dango Ouattara Andoni Iraola, per Liverpool Echo. Bournemouth fended off competition from Porto and Stuttgart to advance their deal after Doak impressed on loan at Middlesbrough last season. ‌ Glasner's Guehi stance Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner claims Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze remain 100 per cent with the Eagles amid speculation over their futures. Eze has been widely linked to Spurs and was rumoured to be set to miss the game against Chelsea, while Guehi has just a year remaining on his contract amid talk of a move to Liverpool. Following the Eagles' goalless draw, Glasner appeared calm over the status of his star players and never considered excluding them from his his squad. "Not at all," he said. ‌ "Ebs and Marc, there has been a lot of noise about these two players in the last week. Everyone could see the performances against Liverpool, and [against Chelsea] they were 100% aligned with this team. "As long as they are 100% committed, they will play as they are so good. I watched them all week in training. I spoke to them almost daily, maybe more than my kids and wife, but it's been worth it to talk to them. They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great persons and that's what I expected." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Jacob Ramsey delighted with £39m move from Aston Villa to Newcastle

Newcastle have completed the signing of the Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey. The 24-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the club, who are understood to have paid an initial £39m for his services, with a further £4m due in add-ons. The Villa academy graduate, who made 167 appearances for their senior team, 10 of them in last season's Champions League, is the fourth acquisition of the summer for the Newcastle head coach, Eddie Howe. 'I'm delighted to be here. It's been a mad two or three days, but I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started,' Ramsey said. 'This is a big move for me, but as soon as I knew the gaffer was interested and really liked me, it didn't take much time to decide. His track record of developing players, especially those who have gone on to become internationals here, speaks for itself. 'It was always a tough game playing for Villa against Newcastle – the team is full of energy, so athletic and the fans are so passionate. I feel my game will suit that and I'm excited to be on the other end of it now.' Newcastle began their Premier League campaign with a 0-0 draw at Villa on Saturday and Ramsey will join the squad on the training pitch as they begin preparations for the visit of the champions, Liverpool, a week on Monday. Howe said: 'Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad. His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt. 'Jacob offers versatility and his directness in attack has proven to be a real threat at this level in recent seasons. He performed very well in the Champions League last season too and we believe he'll be a major asset for us.' Hibs player ratings vs Livingston as two new signings steal the show

Hibs will face Rangers in the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup after a comfortable 2-0 win away at Livingston during their last 16 clash. Thibault Klidje was denied an away opener inside 60 seconds before Josh Campbell almost netted a screamer from range. Klidje eventually headed Hibs ahead with further chances falling their way after half-time, before substitute Josh Mulligan blasted home a stunning winner from range late on. Next up is the first of a two legged Conference League battle with Legia Warsaw at Easter Road on Thursday for the chance to reach the competition's league phase. Less than 72 hours on from a energy-sapping Conference League triumph after extra time over Partizan Belgrade, changes were inevitable. Six in total came into David Gray's side, with new signings like Raphael Sallinger, Miguel Chaiwa and Klidje amongst those given the nod. With a play-off crunch to come against Legia Warsaw midweek, it was a test of how far the squad depth truly stretched. A Scotland international, Champions League experienced midfielder and seven figure striker aren't the worst deputies to turn to, on top of a chance for youngster Kanayo Megwa at right-wing-back and Alasana Manneh in midfield. Kieron Bowie had to settle for a place on the bench after his Puskas Award-worthy lob against Partizan and Klidje tried a miniature version of that from just outside the box, parried over by keeper Jerome Prior. Livi had threatened to pick through Hibs in the first 15 but the pace of Martin Boyle and hassling nature of his strike partner were proving challenging for the hosts to handle. Campbell was keen to add to the Goal of the Season contenders list for games involving Hibs after strikes by Ben Brannan and Bowie in the last week, rifling a half volley from long range off the palms of Prior. Hibs had settled into the game nicely and looked the more menacing when it came to the final third, with last ditch Livi tackles needed consistently. That lead they endeavoured to gain was eventually secured, a Boyle corner flicked on by Klidje, making it's way through a ruck of bodies and into the net. A Jack Iredale stumble showed another was needed to make sure of this, Robbie Muirhead's swing and miss providing a warning shot with the game separated by one goal. That moment came and went quickly though with control soon exerted on this match early in the second 45, Campbell missing Hibs' latest chance to put the game to bed from close range. Livi started opting for the route one approach which forced Hibs into a more defensive minded approach but with every launch into the box came the distinct threat of the visitors countering. In the end it was a moment of powerful magic that won it, Mulligan slamming the ball beyond Prior to give Hibs' rotated cast just rewards for their dominance in proceedings. Rangers await them next month for a chance to return to Hampden but all focus now turns to a huge night on the continent against Legia. Here's how we rated the Hibs players at Almondvale. 1 . Raphael Sallinger - 6/10 Did all the basics well. No shots of note to save. | Alan Rennie Photo Sales 2 . Warren O'Hora - 6/10 Consistent performer in early part of the season. Took up advanced positions which helped passing game. | SNS Group Photo Sales 3 . Grant Hanley - 7/10 Took a bit too long on the ball in opening half that could have been costly but showed experience to work way out of a jam. Building in sharpness and already exerting leadership. Chucked body on line when needed. | SNS Group Photo Sales 4 . Jack Iredale - 7/10 A little slip at start of second half but outside that, a commanding display. Lewis Smith grounded and wrestled with Muirhead well. | SNS Group Photo Sales
