Labubu went from America's most viral toy to a doll linked with Pazuzu and demonic vibes: The rise and fall of a toy explained

Time of India5 days ago
Twelve weeks ago, Labubu was the must-have. Think designer shelves, TikTok unboxings, and fans queuing like Swifties outside Pop Mart stores. With its big eyes, pointy ears, and slightly gremlin-core grin, the elf-like vinyl toy was everywhere. Resale prices exploded. People fought at airports. Even your chillest friend was posting #LabubuHaul videos.
Then… it flipped. Hard.
Labubu was the IT girl of dolls, only until it wasn't
What began as a harmless collector's obsession has now been swallowed by chaos. Out of nowhere, Labubu went from loveable to downright sinister. Reddit threads and TikToks are now swarming with creepy claims, nightmares, weird electrical flickers, aggressive pets, and that unsettling sensation of being watched.
One TikToker insisted their Labubu literally moved on its own. Another Redditor said buying one brought a heavy 'presence' into their room. The internet, naturally, lost its mind.
The Pazuzu theory
Just when things could not get weirder, they did. A now-deleted TikTok sent conspiracy-lovers into a frenzy by comparing Labubu to Pazuzu, the ancient demon from Mesopotamian mythology (yes, the same one referenced in The Exorcist). The similarities? Big staring eyes, those cursed pointy ears, and that unnervingly cheeky smile.
#CursedLabubu and #DemonDoll started trending within hours. Some brushed it off as viral silliness. Others? Already ordering sage online.
Pop Mart reacts, and that only fuels the fire around demonic Labubu
Sensing the hysteria, Pop Mart stepped in with a damage-control post on Weibo and Instagram. The brand dismissed the supernatural claims but admitted that customer discomfort was being taken seriously. Sales were paused, refunds were offered, and future Labubu drops got shelved.
But Gen Z being Gen Z, the acknowledgement only made things feel more cursed. If it really was nothing… then why hit the brakes so hard?
Resellers are in chaos. Some are offloading their Labubus like they are possessed Furby twins, while others are charging absurd prices for 'possibly haunted' pieces. 'I don't care if it triples in value, I want it out of my house,' said one panic seller in a Facebook group.
Whether this is internet madness or genuine cursed energy is up for debate. But one thing is very legit here, Labubu has officially crossed the line from fandom to folklore.

Labubu At Karl Marx's Grave? Internet Can't Handle The Ironic Crossover

The Internet couldn't ignore the irony of a Labubu doll placed on Karl Marx's grave, who famously stood against capitalism. Karl Marx, the political theorist and revolutionary socialist, devoted his entire life to fighting against capitalism and warning people about its consequences. What he probably never thought was that he could become a part of the very thing he opposed. But that's exactly what happened recently at his grave in London's Highgate Cemetery. In a photo going viral on the Internet, people noticed that a Labubu doll was kept on Karl Marx's grave along with flower bouquets and a letter. These plush dolls are all about limited editions, surprise boxes and hype, basically the kind of consumer culture the Father of Communism was against and criticised throughout his life. So, when people on the Internet came across the picture, it went viral, with many reacting to the irony of it. 'Placing a Labubu there is actually akin to performing voodoo on Marx," wrote one user. Another astonishingly asked, 'Is that a f—-g labubu?" A different user said, 'Labubu could be one of the most anti-Marx things I have ever seen." Someone else penned, 'The concept of knowing there is currently a Labubu on Karl Marx's grave." What Is A Labubu Doll? The trendy Labubu doll is part of the Pop Mart collection, which is sold in blind boxes, and customers would not know anything about the colour or type of the doll they will be receiving. Sometimes, these plush toys are sold for hundreds of dollars because of their limited manufacturing. Currently, a Labubu has become a Gen Z status symbol, an example of the kind of artificial desire and consumer frenzy that Karl Marx once warned us against. Karl Marx's Grave Also Had A Letter From A Chinese Student Besides the Labubu, there was something far more personal that stood out to the public: a handwritten letter by a Chinese student by the name of Liu Yuhae. With honest admiration, she reflected on how Karl Marx's writing shaped her view of the world. 'I have always wanted to write you a letter. But when it came to actually writing, I found myself at a loss for words because there was so much I wanted to say," she began her letter. Through the letter, she also described her journey of reading his works, from The Communist Manifesto to The Critique of the Gotha Programme. 'I hope that at the end of my life, I will receive an invitation from you. It has always been my long-cherished wish to cook potatoes for you every day in the afterlife. I already look like a potato now," she mentioned. Towards the end of the letter, she wrote, 'There are so many things to say that I can't possibly express them all. So I'll stop here. If I can meet you in my dreams, I will talk to you in more detail. I believe that you can see me. I won't bother you any more. That's all for now." 'Comrade Labubu': Chinese doll makes its way to Karl Marx's grave in London; post goes viral

(Photo: X) A photo of a Labubu figurine placed on Karl Marx's tomb in London has gone viral on social media. The photo shows the viral toy placed at the foot of Karl Marx's grave in Highgate Cemetery. Online users pointed out the irony, since Marx was a strong critic of capitalism and stood for socialism and communism. The incident has drawn attention to a growing trend known as necrotourism, where people visit cemeteries to pay respects and also to engage with history, art, and culture in new ways. Recently, Labubu dolls are hugely popular among collectors, with long lines at toy stores, waiting lists, and a resale market as intense as the buzz once seen around Supreme streetwear. Cemeteries like Highgate are now seen as cultural spaces. With old tombstones, historic trees, and well-known names buried there, they attract millions who come not just to remember the dead, but to reflect, explore, and even enjoy a quiet picnic under the cypress trees. What started as a niche interest has now become a billion-dollar industry. Known as necrotourism, cemetery tourism is changing the way people see death and history, turning quiet graveyards into lively spaces full of stories and culture. Social media users had mixed reactions to the viral incident.
