Michigan State football left off Sporting News' preseason bowl projections
Bender released updated bowl projections late last month, which failed to include the Spartans. Bender elected to have Wisconsin land in the GameAbove Sports Bowl and Rutgers in the Rate Bowl over Michigan State finding its way into those two lower tier Big Ten bowl games.
Michigan State is looking to bounce back from a rough finish to the opening season under new head coach Jonathan Smith. The Spartans opened 2024 with a 3-0 record before struggling to reach bowl eligibility and finishing 5-7 overall.
Michigan State comes into this season with a win total over-under of 5.5 so the betting experts think the Spartans will once again be right around bowl eligibility this year. However, most of the preseason bowl projections I've came across are like Bender and don't have the Spartans bowling this year.
The Spartans will kick off the 2025 season on August 29 against in-state foe Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on FS1.

Sean Payton gives better than expected update after Drew Sanders injury
There's good news on the Drew Sanders front. When news broke over the weekend that the linebacker was set to miss extended time with a foot injury, NFL Network initially reported that Sanders suffered a tendon injury. That report was inaccurate, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton clarified after Monday's practice. "One update just on Drew -- because there's been a lot written -- the news for us was good news in that it's a ligament in his foot, and it's not a tendon," Payton explained. "What does that mean? It's going to be certainly north of four to six weeks, but the tendon was what we were concerned about. So, I'm not going to try to spell it, but the ligament repair is a much easier one than that of a tendon. So we were all pretty happy with that." Payton noted that there have been cases with this kind of injury leading to surgery and some cases without surgery. Sanders is currently exploring his options. With Sanders sidelined, Justin Strnad is the next man up as the top backup behind projected starters Dre Greenlaw and Alex Singleton in 2025. Denver also has second-year LB Levelle Bailey, plus undrafted free agent additions Karene Reid, JB Brown and Jordan Turner available at the position. Michigan State basketball renews series with in-state opponent
Michigan State basketball is adding an in-state opponent with a familiar face on the bench to their 2025-26 schedule, renewing an old series between the two. Michigan State ill be hosting the Detroit Mercy Titans at the Breslin Center on Friday, Nov. 21, for the first matchup between the two schools since 2020. The Spartans won the 2020 meeting, 83-76. An interesting matchup between the two schools is centered around Titans head coach Mark Montgomery, who is a Spartan alum and former MSU assistant coach. As always, Izzo will love bringing a friend and former assistant back to campus for an in-state showdown. Two Ohio State players named to the 2025 Bronko Nagurski preseason watch list
The preseason watch list parade continued on Tuesday with the Football Writers Association of America releasing the 2025 Bronko Nagurski preseason watch list, and there are two Ohio State players among the 60 names initially announced. Safety Caleb Downs, who is pretty much on every single preseason watch list he's eligible for, was among the players named, as was linebacker Sonny Styles. The Nagurski is awarded to the player judged to be the best defensive player in college football annually and has been handed out by the Charlotte Touchdown Club in conjunction with the FWAA. The Trophy has been around since 1993, with two OSU players having won the award. Current Ohio State assistant coach James Laurinaitis won the Trophy in 2006, and defensive end Chase Young took it home in 2019. Downs should get plenty of consideration and might be the favorite to take it home before the season starts. He was a unanimous All-American last year after transferring from Alabama. He has been named to every single preseason first-team All-American team for 2025 so far. Styles is entering his senior year after really coming on at the tail-end of last season. He was second on the team with 100 tackles and could have a major breakout year with his athleticism continuing to catch up with the game coming to him more at the linebacker position. He's been recognized on several preseason All-American teams so far as well. The list can and will change throughout the year, with additional players being added as performance dictates. The Trophy will be awarded on December 8 at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet in Charlotte, North Carolina.
