Seamless interstate travel across Borneo
The Sarawak Business Federation, an umbrella body representing hundreds of trade entities, has lauded the federal government for prioritising the vital land links, as announced by the prime minister during the 13MP tabling.
Federation secretary-general Datuk Jonathan Chai said the 13MP carries immense significance for Sarawak.
'The plan looks set to transform the Sarawak-Sabah and Sarawak-Kalimantan to Nusantara (new Indonesian capital) landscape in terms of land connectivity.
'The Sarawak-Sabah direct highway will see the road link between the two states enhanced by leaps and bounds, as travellers will enjoy seamless interstate connectivity.
'The upgrading of Sarawak to Kalimantan and onwards to Nusantara will see that region transformed into another massive socio-economic hub for Borneo. Cross-border trade and social relations will see huge surges,' he said in a statement.
Chai added that the road links will also act as catalysts for other developments, such as electricity-supply integration across Borneo. The major road projects will be fast-tracked for completion within five years.
Currently, commuters travelling by land from Miri, Sarawak to Sabah must pass through Brunei, encountering four immigration and customs checkpoints – each with both Malaysian and Bruneian posts. This means travellers have to stop and scan their passports eight times, often facing long queues and traffic jams at the borders.
The proposed Sarawak-Sabah Highway will provide a direct Miri–Sabah link, bypassing Brunei entirely. Putrajaya will fund the highway through a RM7.4 billion package.

Business Events Instrumental To Achieve Tourism Targets Under 13MP -- Ahmad Zahid
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Business events will be instrumental for Malaysia to achieve its targets of 35.6 million tourist arrivals and RM147 billion in total receipts during Visit Malaysia Year 2026, as well as a 16 per cent contribution to gross domestic product from the tourism sector during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) period. In saying this, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi pointed out that business delegates are high-value travellers, as they stay longer, spend more, make repeat visits, and often return with their families. 'More importantly, business travellers bring with them ideas, investments, and influence,' he said in his opening speech at the Business Events Awards Gala Dinner here today. According to him, the tourism sector is also resurgent and remains a key national priority. 'In 2024 alone, foreign tourist expenditure surged to RM102.2 billion, a strong indicator that Malaysia's appeal is not only intact, it is expanding,' Ahmad Zahid said. Over the past decade, Malaysia has hosted more than 3,000 business events, drawing over a million delegates and generating an estimated RM18 billion in economic impact. Ahmad Zahid said the government recognises the business events industry as a strategic engine for inclusive, sustainable and high-impact growth. He said the government is taking concrete steps by streamlining visa facilitation, especially for high-frequency travellers, and upgrading major airports and convention venues to meet global standards. In addition, he said, it is looking at deepening inter-agency collaboration, especially between the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS); the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry; and the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry.

SD Guthrie responds to Indonesian forest permit concerns
KUALA LUMPUR: SD Guthrie Bhd says less than three per cent of its 180,000 hectares of planted oil palm area in Indonesia is currently under review by the Indonesian government. Addressing concerns over reports suggesting that some of its Indonesian subsidiaries may be operating in forest-designated areas without permits, group managing director Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha said the matter is not unique to SD Guthrie. Similar overlaps have affected both Malaysian and Indonesian plantation companies operating in the country, he added. CIMB Securities recently highlighted growing regulatory risks for Malaysian plantation companies operating in Indonesia. This followed the Indonesian government's move to seize land lacking proper forestry permits or in violation of land-use laws. SD Guthrie's Indonesian subsidiaries were listed in an official decree, with 3,045 hectares under scrutiny, 1,874 hectares currently under the legalisation process and 1,171 hectares reportedly rejected. "For context, our total planted area in Indonesia is about 180,000 hectares. Less than three per cent of this has been flagged by the authorities as overlapping with forest zones," Helmy said at a press briefing here today. "However, we have our own data that disputes this, and discussions with the Indonesian government are ongoing," he added. Helmy said SD Guthrie continues to manage operations in the affected areas and is in active discussions with the Indonesian government to resolve the land classification concerns Group chief operating officer Mohd Haris Mohd Arsyad said the issue is not about illegal clearing or expansion, but rather differing interpretations of land use boundaries. "There's the Perhutanan (forestry) map, and then there's the map from the ministry that gives us our licenses. Much of this happened before we acquired the land," he said. The land in question was acquired from the Indonesian government in 2001 during a post-financial crisis asset restructuring. Helmy likened the acquisition to Malaysia's Danaharta model, saying that it was conducted with representations and warranties from the government. Chief financial officer Renaka Ramachandran clarified that SD Guthrie should not be associated with deforestation, as the plantations were already established prior to the acquisition. "We never planted the land ourselves. We bought ready-made plantations, and the agreement came with assurances from the government. Accusations of deforestation should not arise," she said. The executives reiterated that SD Guthrie holds valid land titles and has complied with relevant processes. They acknowledged that resolving the matter will require time and continued engagement with authorities. "We're confident this will be resolved, but it's a complex issue that requires ongoing dialogue with the government," said Haris.
