ACB to probe AAP's Bharadwaj, Satyender Jain in multi-crore hospital scam, party denies allegations
NEW DELHI: In a fresh trouble for former ministers and AAP leaders Saurabh Bharadwaj and Satyendar Jain, the Union Home Ministry has given the nod to the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) for an investigation against them in the alleged thousands crore 'hospitals scam'.
Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena had recommended an inquiry against the former health ministers. The AAP, however, refuted the allegations against its leaders.
In August 2024, BJP MLA Vijender Gupta alleged irregularities in the execution of healthcare infrastructure projects worth over Rs 1,000 crore.
The irregularities flagged by Gupta include 24 hospital projects—11 greenfield and 13 brownfield—sanctioned at Rs 5,590 crore in 2018-19, are yet mired in inexplicable delays. Seven ICU hospitals sanctioned at a cost of Rs 1,125 crore for construction within six months from September, 2021 still await completion.
Accordingly, the ACB referred the matter to Vigilance Department for approval to probe the two, which forwarded the request to relevant departments.
The AAP, however, said the BJP and the L-G have turned governance into a 'laughing stock' by weaponising routine project delays as alleged corruption.
Drawing a stark contrast with the Centre's record, AAP questioned why no CBI inquiries have been launched into the 10-year delay of the Bullet Train project or the fact that 53% of Central government infrastructure projects face delays exceeding three years and massive cost overruns.

Two shot at in Hazaribagh days after Rs 5 lakh extortion demand
Hazaribagh: In a chilling incident in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh district, two youths were shot at in broad daylight on Wednesday in the Keredari police station area, police officials said. The attack occurred barely a week after they were allegedly threatened with an extortion demand of Rs 5 lakh. The victims, identified as Phooleshwar Bedia and Baiju Bedia, both residents of Lurunga village in Barkagaon block, have been admitted to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital in Hazaribagh. Phooleshwar, who sustained a bullet injury in the chest, is reported to be in critical condition. According to police, the two run a pig farm in their village and were returning by auto after collecting leftover food from the mess of the BGR Mining Company in Barkagaon. Around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, six armed assailants on three motorcycles intercepted their vehicle and opened fire on them. Baiju, who survived the attack, told police that about a week ago, a group of youths had demanded Rs 5 lakh as extortion. Since both victims are involved in small-scale farming, they had dismissed it as a prank. However, Wednesday's attack confirmed their worst fears. After the shooting, local residents rushed the injured to the Community Health Centre in Keredari, from where they were referred to the Medical College Hospital for further treatment. Police from the Keredari station reached the spot soon after the incident and launched an investigation. No arrests have been made so far. Earlier on Sunday, criminals opened fire -- reportedly 6 to 7 rounds -- at a jewellery shop in Hazaribagh city. A day later, in Jorakat village of Barkagaon block, miscreants torched seven vehicles, including a JCB and a truck engaged in road construction work. Labourers at the site were also assaulted. Interestingly, the shooting took place on a day when traders in Hazaribagh had shut down their businesses to protest the rising crime in the district.

When asked about Tharoor's recent article in The Hindu, where he called PM Modi "a prime asset for India on the global stage", Kharge said: "I can't read English, but his language is very good, that's why we made him a member of the party's working committee. But what I want to say is that all of us, the entire opposition, have come together and said we stand with our Army, our Army that is fighting, we are with them." "We say nation first, but some consider Modi first, country later. What can we do about that? " Kharge asked. Responding to whether Congress was afraid of taking action against Tharoor, the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha said the Thiruvananthapuram MP was speaking "according to his wishes". Revised Jharia master plan gets Cabinet nod, Rs 5,940 crore outlay approved, livelihoods and resettlement prioritised
File photo (TOI) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the Revised Jharia Master Plan (JMP) for dealing with fire, land subsidence, and rehabilitation of families affected by decades of underground coal fires in the Jharia coalfield of Jharkhand. The revised plan entails a total financial outlay of Rs 5,940.47 crore and will be implemented in a phased manner, with priority given to the most vulnerable sites. According to a government statement, the revised plan places stronger emphasis on sustainable livelihood generation. Families being resettled will receive targeted skill development training and access to income-generating opportunities to help ensure long-term economic stability. As part of the revised package, both Legal Title Holder (LTH) and Non-Legal Title Holder (Non-LTH) families will be eligible for a one-time Livelihood Grant of Rs 1 lakh and institutional credit support of up to Rs 3 lakh. The Cabinet also approved the development of comprehensive infrastructure and essential amenities at the resettlement sites.
