Externment notice served on Hindutva activist and BJP leader Arun Kumar Puttila
The notice issued on May 28, under Section 55 of the Karnataka Police Act, 1963, did not mention any reasons for the move. It stated that if Mr. Puttila fails to appear before the officer by June 6 to present his case, the issue would be decided based on the available material. Section 55 of the Act deals with the removal of persons who were about to commit any offence.
A resident of Mundur village in Puttur taluk, 54-year-old Mr. Puttila had unsuccessfully contested the 2023 Assembly elections from Puttur as an Independent, losing to incumbent Ashok Kumar Rai of the Congress by a margin of 4,149 votes. He entered the fray as a rebel candidate after the BJP refused him the party ticket. While Mr. Rai polled 66,607 votes, Mr. Puttila polled 62,458 votes, and the BJP's Asha Thimmappa secured 37,558 votes at that time.

Asked about the reasons for the externment notice, Puttur AC Stella Varghese said it was based on the recommendations of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Puttur sub-division, who had listed several cases against Mr. Puttila. 'I will hold a court of inquiry and hear both sides before passing orders—either accepting or rejecting the plea. The reasons were communicated to the person concerned, she said.'
Ms. Varghese also said that she has received similar requests for externment from the police against 22 persons, and notices were issued to them as well.

Agency: PTI Chandigarh, Aug 12 (PTI) Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday chaired a law and order review meeting and outreach sessions with officers of Ferozepur, Faridkot, Bathinda and Patiala ranges ahead of Independence Day. During his day-long tour, the DGP has visited three districts including Ferozepur, Bathinda and Patiala. He issued strategic directives on counter-terror readiness, inter-district coordination, checkpoints, and continuous surveillance to ensure safe Independence Day celebrations and to eliminate the cross-border drug menace through enforcement of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act . Yadav appreciated police work on 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign and directed them to further intensify initiative to wipe out the drugs from the state. The DGP also instructed all district police chiefs to maintain peace and harmony by intensifying cop forces at important locations, domination operations and ensuring other preventive measures. He also briefed the police force regarding the current security scenario and reviewed counter-terror strategies. As part of the outreach, Yadav also engaged directly with officers across all ranks including station house officers (SHOs), encouraging an open discussion and exchange of valuable field insights to strengthen inter-district coordination. 'Had a fruitful feedback session with all SHOs, who are truly the backbone of Punjab Police. The interaction provided valuable insights and constructive feedback, reinforcing our shared commitment to public safety and community well-being," he said. Speculations fuel over fracture in Mahayuti as Shinde, Gogawale skip cabinet meeting
The Maharashtra government's decision to have NCP minister Aditi Tatkare and BJP minister Girish Mahajan hoist the national flag in Raigad and Nashik on Independence Day, bypassing Shiv Sena hopefuls has triggered a fresh controversy. A day after, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and senior Sena MLA minister Bharat Gogawale, who has been lobbying for the Raigad guardian minister's post, skipped the state cabinet meeting on Tuesday, fuelling speculation of discontent within the ruling Mahayuti alliance. The move comes against the backdrop of long-pending appointments of guardian ministers in two districts- Raigad and Nashik. Sena ministers Gogawale and Dada Bhuse both have been lobbying for these posts. On Monday, the state's General Administration Department issued a circular naming Tatkare for Raigad and Mahajan for Nashik for the flag hoisting for Independence day. Sena leaders say this was perceived as a political snub to their claimants. Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders seized the opportunity, with Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut alleging that Shinde had been 'shown his place' by the local BJP leaders and Shinde had even complained to Union Home Minister Amit Shah about being sidelined. Shinde-led Sena leaders however denied having any fissures in the alliance and said that Shinde could not attend the meeting since he is currently in Srinagar after attending a blood donation camp in Jammu, and Gogawale is in Delhi and hence both were absent from the cabinet meeting. Sena functionaries insisted both had informed the CM's office in advance and had officially taken leave. Gogawale reiterated his ambitions for the Raigad post but denied any personal animosity. 'I am 100 percent committed to the guardian ministership. There is a difference between hoisting the flag and the guardian ministership. Just because someone hoists the flag doesn't make them the guardian minister. Whatever decision the seniors take, we will accept. I have no objection to Aditi Tatkare hoisting the flag,' he said, adding that he hoped the decision on guardian ministerships would come 'after the flag-hoisting.' The discontent within the Shinde camp is not limited to the guardian minister row. In recent weeks, Sena MLAs — including Sanjay Gaikwad — have openly complained of not receiving development funds for their constituencies for over 10 months. Gaikwad, considered a close aide of Shinde, said that while Dy CM Shinde, CM Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar had assured that the situation would improve, the lack of funds had created frustration among legislators. Minister Pratap Sarnaik, however, dismissed these claims, saying funds were being allocated for departmental works such as transport infrastructure. In Nashik, the decision to assign Mahajan the flag-hoisting duty over Sena's Dada Bhuse has sparked similar murmurs. Sena minister Uday Samant attempted to calm the waters, saying the Independence Day list was 'only about flag-hoisting' and not a declaration of guardian ministers. He also stressed that in his personal view, 'Dada Bhuse should be Nashik's guardian minister and Bharat Gogawale for Raigad,' but that the final decision rests with Shinde, who will consult the alliance leaders.

The Opposition threw some papers while protesting and the Chair took a grim view of the conduct. Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said, "How can you throw papers at the chair?... You should be ashamed." Pal observed that Congress' deputy leader in the Lok Sabha had been "instigating" people to enter the well and throw papers. While not naming anyone, he said the conduct was not appropriate.
