ESPN tabs Iowa basketball star as 2026 NBA draft 1st-round prospect
ESPN tabs Iowa basketball star as 2026 NBA draft 1st-round prospect Iowa basketball has been busy in the transfer portal, adding six transfers to the program this offseason. The Hawkeyes made waves early during the transfer portal cycle, bringing in arguably the top player in former Drake point guard Bennett Stirtz. The 6-foot-4 guard chose to follow first-year head coach Ben McCollum to Iowa. Stirtz's arrival brought immediate star power to the black and gold. The Liberty, Missouri, native was the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year last season after averaging 19.2 points, 5.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game on 49.8% field goal shooting, 39.5% 3-point accuracy and 79.4% from the free throw line. Stirtz was named a first-team All-American by The Field of 68. ESPN thinks Iowa is welcoming a superstar. ESPN NBA draft analyst Jonathan Givony chose Stirtz as his prospect that could be a 2026 NBA draft first-rounder after opting to return to college. Bennett Stirtz, a 6-foot-4 point guard who played for Drake last season, was one of the breakout stars of the NCAA tournament, posting 42 points and 12 assists in two strong performances against Missouri and Texas, showing his game more than translates against elite-level competition after a dominant season in the Horizon League. Stirtz was ranked No. 35 in the ESPN Top 100 when he announced he would enter the transfer portal and follow his coach, Ben McCollum, from Drake to Iowa, not even bothering to test the NBA draft waters along the way. NBA scouts won't complain about having a full season to evaluate Stirtz in the Big Ten, where they'll get a better feel for how his impressive ballhandling, ability to change speeds, touch and creativity finishing around the basket translate for a full season. Stirtz is a dynamic perimeter shooter who is one of the best passers and decision-makers in college basketball but getting a better gauge for his defense and how he handles coaches planning against him on a nightly basis will surely shed light on how high he should be selected next June. - Jonathan Givony, ESPN. If Stirtz replicates what he accomplished at Drake in the Big Ten, then he very well could see his name rocketing up 2026 NBA draft boards. For the Hawkeyes, Stirtz's familiarity with coach McCollum's system and his proven star power will pay dividends for a program transitioning into a new era. 2026 4-star CB visited Texas A&M ahead of his official visit this summer
2026 4-star CB visited Texas A&M ahead of his official visit this summer Just like the progress made with 2026 five-star wide receiver and LSU commit Tristen Keys, who Texas A&M will host from an official visit shortly, coach Mike Elko and his staff are looking to land one of the top defensive back prospects out of Arizona, who happened to be a high school teammate with freshman cornerback Jamar Beal-Goines. Last month, it was revealed that 2026 four-star cornerback Camren Hamiel placed Texas A&M in his top four program list, joining Nebraska, Oregon, and Penn State. Knowing that the competition is fierce, Elko and his staff reportedly hosted Hamiel this weekend, prior to his official visit to College Station on June 20. However, outside of Elko, defensive back coaches Ishmael Aristide and Jordan Peterson have been two of the best recruiters in the country, single-handedly landing several commitments in the 2025 and 2026 classes over the last two offseasons, while making strides with several visiting defensive backs, including Hamiel. During his 2024 junior season, Hamiel recorded an impressive 50 tackles, including 35 solo tackles, three interceptions, and three pass deflections at Desert Edge. On the field, Hamiel's closing speed and ability to play in the box make him a versatile athlete with a bright future, no matter the school he chooses. According to 247Sports, Hamiel is currently positioned as the 35th-ranked cornerback prospect and the 2nd-ranked prospect in Arizona. Nebraska hosts rising 2028 lineman over the weekend
Nebraska hosts rising 2028 lineman over the weekend Nebraska football hosted class of 2028 offensive lineman Hayden Shannon on Sunday. The announcement was made by Shannon on social media. Shannon is not ranked in the Rivals rankings, but his profile is growing. He has one offer on the table at the moment, as Nebraska did so on March 29. He took an unofficial visit to the program that same day. He is being recruited to Nebraska by offensive line coach Donovan Raiola. Shannon measures in at six-foot-four, 275 pounds. It's worth noting that he also has an interest in Iowa and Iowa State. The Cyclones have recruited well in the state of Nebraska in the 2026 class, and are making another push in the state. Nebraska has zero commitments in the 2028 class. It would be reasonable to expect an uptick in visits over the next couple of weeks, with many coming for future classes. Shannon would add another talented offensive lineman for a program that has built strong depth at the position over the last couple of classes.
