Eurovision: UK entry Remember Monday promises theatrical act

BBC News08-03-2025

About 200 million viewers, 37 countries taking part and cries of "Nul Points" on the horizon.Eurovision fever has been ramping up with Remember Monday announced as the UK's entry to the world's largest live music event. And with all three members of the group having a background in musical theatre, they know more than most about how to put on a show. "Our performance is theatrical," Holly-Anne Hull tells BBC Newsbeat, as Lauren Byrne adds: "We haven't shied away from it".
Despite the pressure of years of disappointing results for the UK, the trio, completed by Charlotte Steele, have been busy in rehearsals and say they're "feeling good" about their chances in Basel, Switzerland. With the exception of Sam Ryder's second place in 2022, the UK's been stuck in the bottom half of the leader board for a decade - even the star power of Olly Alexander couldn't pull the country higher than 18th.To break out of the rut needs a roll of the dice and Holly-Anne says "we were a real risk".Not least because they hadn't even written their entry when they found out they'd be representing the country."That was really scary - finding out we got it and we were like: 'But what do we sing?'"
The song they've gone for, What The Hell Just Happened?, crosses a few different genres, including country, pop and, of course, musical theatre. It may be risky, but Remember Monday aren't the only ones feeling confident it could break them into the top half of the leaderboard."I think all the evidence points towards a better result at Eurovision this year," Euro Trip podcast host, Rob Lilley-Jones, tells Newsbeat. With a country background, Remember Monday can bring something "a little bit different for the UK", he says."No other country is doing anything like this at Eurovision this year."Lauren says the group's love of country can be traced through to their passion for storytelling through music and they've already been making waves in the genre.Last year they were recognised as best trio by the British Country Music Association and have toured the US as well as the UK, racking up hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify along the way.
Rather than a public vote, the entry was chosen by a team made up of UK record labels, publishers, songwriters, BBC Music and BBC Introducing. They worked closely with Sam Ryder's manager, David May, in the hope he could find another contender for the top spot. Since Remember Monday were unveiled as the UK entry, reaction has been largely positive on social media, but after a difficult few years in the competition there is some scepticism too.Lauren, Holly-Anne and Charlotte found out in December they'd be heading to the 69th Eurovision competition in Switzerland."Andrew [Cartmell, the BBC's head of delegation for the UK] was like: 'So first things first girls, what are you doing in May next year?'," Lauren says of the day they found out. Charlotte received the news while visiting her grandad in hospital while Lauren was parked up at a service station."We just go dead silent and just release so many tears," Holly-Anne says."We were just sobbing. It's so surreal."
'It's our version of shopping'
Like former entrants Sam Ryder and Mae Muller, they credit TikTok with getting their break. They've got more than half a million followers on the app with a combined 11.3 million likes across their videos."It really has changed our lives - without sounding too dramatic," Charlotte says. "We started posting in lockdown and when we came out we put on a gig, our first one in a long time, and it sold out in like 24 hours."They thought it was their families who "spent a lot of money on tickets"."We walked out on stage and we didn't recognise anyone - it was all new faces."It was that gig that spurred us on to do this full-time."
It's only been about 18 months since they decided to take the plunge and focus fully on the band but they go back much further. First meeting at school in Hampshire, the trio used to skip classes to practise instead."We have been singing for years and years for fun because we adore singing with each other," says Holly-Anne. "It's our version of shopping or getting our nails done."They hope that legacy of friendship will be the secret to going the distance in this year's competition."We have each other, we are best mates, we're each other's therapists."Remember Monday also marks the first time since a girl group has represented the UK in more than 25 years and podcast host Rob thinks this might give them an edge too."It's going to be really exciting to follow their journey all the way through to Switzerland."I don't know if Remember Monday are going to win Eurovision, there are so many different things there at play - but I think we've got a good chance," he says.

Lauren Goodger says surgery has 'ruined her looks' and 'makes her look bigger'

Former TOWIE star Lauren Goodger has said she hates her body and thinks she's 'ruined her looks' after undergoing a number of cosmetic surgery procedures Reality TV legend Lauren Goodger has heartbreakingly admitted she regrets some of her cosmetic surgery and currently hates her appearance. The Only Way Is Essex icon has confessed that she believes her cosmetic procedures have 'ruined her looks' and plans to reverse them. Lauren, 38, first appeared on our TV screens when TOWIE premiered in 2010 and has been in the public eye ever since - with her looks often securitised by cruel trolls. ‌ Last month, the Essex native revealed she's planning to remove her breast implants after 11 years, as she wants to feel like her 'normal self' again and go back to being 'natural'. ‌ Captioning a photo of herself in pink lingerie, Lauren told her Instagram followers: "11 years ago, I had a breast augmentation, one of the things I regret later in life. I had the perfect boobs... they have been great over the years but since being a mum and breastfeeding for one year they have now changed and I've always found they make me look bigger! "Also they are heavy and I don't like the idea of an implant being in me all these years and I miss my old boobs so much .. so after looking around I've found someone that I feel really keen with having my consultation with @marksolomos! This is a HUGE step for me I've wanted to have them removed for so long but suffering with serve anxiety surgery is the last thing I can do!" In a new interview, Lauren, who was once engaged to childhood sweetheart Mark Wright, reflected further on her past surgeries and admitted they've left her feeling that her body appears 'abnormal'. She told The Sun that her 'massive boobs and bum' make her appear larger than she is, and shared her desire to return to her previous appearance. Lauren confessed: "I've ruined my looks with surgery - I hate my fake boobs and bum now. I feel like my body looks abnormal - I don't need these massive boobs and massive bum. When I look at myself naked in the mirror, all I see is lumps and bumps everywhere." ‌ The reality TV star, shares daughter Larose, three, with her ex Charles Drury and late daughter Lorena who died at birth in 2022, has previously also spoken about her 'Brazilian butt lift' (BBL) procedure done in Turkey in 2017. The surgery, which transferred fat from various parts of her body to her buttocks, is now something she wishes she could undo. Speaking to Closer magazine last year, she said: "When I had everything done, I looked the b****ks. My boobs looked amazing, I loved how I looked in pictures and all the attention. But now I wish I'd never had anything. I want it all out." She lamented the physical discomfort and aesthetic issues caused by her enhanced features, stating: "My bum and boobs make me look bigger and cause me pain. I want to reverse it all and go back to natural." Speaking to OK! magazine, the Celebrity Big Brother and Dancing on Ice star revealed that she hasn't had fillers for more than two years, although she opts for Botox thrice annually. Lauren also explained how she abstains from alcohol, cigarettes, vaping, and caffeine, aiming to lead a 'healthier and happier' lifestyle.

Surgery made my body look abnormal – I'm taking drastic measures to fix it, but not with fat jabs, says Lauren Goodger

Lauren has revealed the advice she'll give to her young daughter when it comes to going under the knife BUM MOVE Surgery made my body look abnormal – I'm taking drastic measures to fix it, but not with fat jabs, says Lauren Goodger WITH her cosmetically enhanced bosom and gravity defying Brazilian butt lift, Lauren Goodger was just one of many reality stars determined to attain that infamous Kardashian look back in the late 2010s. And as Lauren's fame grew so did her boobs and bum, trips to the surgeon weren't uncommon and she quickly became the queen of curves, which she regularly showed off alongside her plump pout. 11 Lauren Goodger has said she thinks surgery ruined her body Credit: Instagram 11 The star is planning to get her surgery reversed Credit: Instagram 11 Lauren is particularly unhappy with her BBL Credit: Instagram But fast forward a decade, and the TOWIE star regrets ever going under the surgeon's scalpel, admitting: 'I've ruined my looks with surgery - I hate my fake boobs and bum now.' And like scores of others in her position, from Love Island's Faye Winter to Geordie Shore's Chloe Ferry, the 38-year-old mum is getting ALL of her surgeries reversed in a bid to return to the fresh-faced girl who first hit our TV screens all the way back in 2010. The reality star exclusively told The Sun: 'I feel like my body looks abnormal - I don't need these massive boobs and massive bum. 'They make me look bigger than I am and I wish I'd never had them done in the first place. When I look at myself naked in the mirror, all I see is lumps and bumps everywhere. 'I'm 100% getting it all reversed. I don't want anything fake in my body. This look doesn't suit me anymore and I'm ready to go back to the old Lauren.' Under the knife Lauren's surgery journey began in 2013 when she had her boobs boosted from a 34D to a 34E. While she was thrilled with them at first, after two pregnancies - Lauren gave birth to daughter Larose in July 2021 and lost her second daughter, Lorena, a year later - she is deeply unhappy with how they look. My boobs and bum make me look bigger than I am and I wish I'd never had them done in the first place. Lauren on her body 'I've had a great time with my boobs over the years, but since being pregnant twice back to back and breastfeeding, my body has changed and they are absolutely massive now. They must be a size G or a H and I can't wear a bra. I just wear sports bras. 'I went to see a surgeon not long ago, and he told me the implant has dropped too, so rather than being in place, they've sagged.' And it's not just the appearance of her boobs that Lauren is unhappy with. She adds: 'They are just so heavy and uncomfortable. I get back ache, they're so heavy I even struggle breathing and getting dressed is really hard work. I can't wear anything nice because it doesn't fit my boobs.' Two years after getting her implants, Lauren then decided to supersize her derriere with not one but TWO butt lifts. Lauren Goodger reveals new face as she gets huge 'butterfly lips' 'I had my bum done in 2016 and I loved it at first, but then I decided it wasn't big enough so I got it done again in 2017,' she recalls. "It was the fashion at the time, but I was also a lot smaller then too and I trained a lot. 'But again, after two pregnancies, my bum is absolutely huge. It was never this big before.' 11 Lauren will be getting her boobs done at the end of the year Credit: Instagram 11 Lauren is hoping to have small perky boobs Credit: Getty - Contributor 11 Lauren often shows off her curves on social media And the type of surgery Lauren had makes it more difficult to reverse. 'With a BBL, you can either have an implant in, or fat transfer. I had the fat transfer - I basically had 360-degree lipo from my knees up and they put it all into my bum. 'In hindsight, I wish that I had an implant, because then they could just take it out, but I had fat put in the muscle so it's harder to reduce it.' Determined, however, to undo the damage she has done to herself, Lauren has made a plan, starting with her breast explant surgery. 'I've booked to have my boobs out at the end of the year before Christmas, and I'm really excited,' she reveals, adding that the op will cost around £12,000. My bum is absolutely huge. It was never this big before. Lauren on her body 'For me, surgery is a much bigger deal now than when I was younger, as I'm a mum now and need to be around for my daughter, Larose. I've been through a lot of trauma since I lost Lorena, and I've got a lot of fears and anxiety, but I've done a lot of work on myself and I'm ready now. 'When I get these boobs out, they are going to cut the majority of the skin away too, so I'll be left with these nice little round perky boobs like I used to have. 'Everyone is going to be like, 'Bloody hell Lauren, you look half the size.' I bumped into a friend recently and it looked like she'd lost about two stone, but she'd just had her implants out. It will make a massive, massive difference. 'Then once the boobs are out, I'll look at getting my bum small again, which I'll have to combine with getting back in the gym and training. I can't wait.' Body struggles Being scrutinised in the public eye has seriously affected her over the years, and she admits it definitely gave her body dysmorphia at the time. She says: 'I've always been bullied for my appearance - even when I wore a size 6-8, I was made to feel big. Magazines always printed pictures of me with unflattering angles, or they'd be distorted and unrealistic. Nobody allowed me to be small. 'My appearance has always been so scrutinised - even my teeth. I always had beautiful teeth, but I got veneers because I saw these pictures of me that didn't look anything like me where it looked like I had teeth missing. I felt like I needed a bigger smile, but I regret that as well. 'When Larose is older, I won't let her get anything done because she is beautiful as she is. I never listened to my mum, but Larose will listen to me. She'll learn from my mistakes.' 11 Lauren shares a daughter with her ex Charles Drury Credit: Instagram 11 The star has now returned to Towie Credit: Louis Wood Now Lauren says she's sworn off surgery for life and the only thing she'll ever have done in future is Botox. 'The only I don't regret is my botox - that's amazing and I'll never stop that! ' she smiles. 'But even then, I only have it twice a year. 'I haven't had any filler in my lips since 2022 either. I'm too scared to get it done now, so I just leave it and it dissolves on its own.' 'I'll never take jabs' She also vows never to resort to fat jabs like Ozempic and Mounjaro, despite their soaring popularity. She tells The Sun: 'I'll never take them, it's against everything that I believe,' Lauren insists. 'We don't know the full side effects of them, they've not been around for long enough. Also I think a lot of people don't just lose fat, they lose muscle, which is why they look frail. I feel like it just ages everyone as well.' "Everyone is on there own journey and I am not here to judge anyone that's just my personal opinion. I know people that rave about the jabs and I am happy for them. But it's not for me'. Although she knows her total transformation won't happen overnight, she's excited for the day when she is finally back to her old self. 'I literally can't wait, I'd get rid of all this surgery tomorrow if I could.' 11 Lauren rose to fame on Towie in 2010 Credit: Getty - Contributor 11 Lauren was one of the show's original cast members Credit: Rex Features 11 She was famously engaged to Mark Wright Credit: The Only Way Is Essex 'I've always known I'm a sexy girl, but I'll feel sexier than ever when all of this is done.' The single star insists, however, that her make-under is all for herself, and nothing to do with making herself more appealing to a man. 'People think I'm back with Charles [Drury, Larose and Lorena's dad] but I'm not. We're just co-parenting because we want to keep things as normal as we can for Larose. 'I'm very much single. Of course, I'd like to settle down with someone again one day, but right now I'm focusing on healing myself. 'Besides, I still co-sleep with Larose anyway, so there's no room for a man in the bed right now!'
