'Scary incident' as gel pellets fired from vehicle at Minneapolis middle schoolers
An email sent to parents says the incident happened near Justice Page Middle School and Washburn High School in south Minneapolis Friday morning.
Principals Shannon Tenner and Emily Palmer wrote: "We are writing to share that a scary incident happened near our schools this morning before class started.
"A young adult drove by a group of Justice Page students and shot Orbeez gel pellets out the window of a truck, hitting multiple Justice Page and Washburn students."
The principals say the suspect has been identified and is not a student at either Washburn or Justice Page.
They continue to describe a situation in which a vehicle sidles up before someone opens fire from within – even though using a toy gun – as "very alarming."
Orbeez makes water-absorbing beads designed to be fired from splat ball guns, and have been known to cause injury when fired close enough. There have also been reports from other parts of the country of the beads being frozen before firing to cause greater injury.
"We are relieved that our students are ok," Tenner and Palmer wrote.

El Paso man arrested for allegedly shooting dog, donations sought for dog's medical care
An El Paso man arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty allegedly fired a gel blaster gun at his pit bull mix dog while live streaming it on social media, authorities said. Officers arrested Jesus Armando Ortega, 27, on a charge of cruelty to non-livestock animal by killing, poisoning or causing serious bodily injury, El Paso Police Department spokesperson Officer Adrian Cisneros said in a news release. El Paso Animal Services officials reported a video posted on social media to police of a dog, named Spanky, being hit several times with a 'gel blaster' fired from an "Orbeez gun," the news release states. Orbeez guns are toy guns that shoot gel-like beads at high speeds. The El Paso Police Department's Animal Cruelty Investigation Unit investigated the case and identified Ortega as the man in the video, the news release states. More: Fort Bliss soldier charged with animal cruelty after dog found hanging from truck Ortega allegedly went live on social media about 10 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at a home in the 3000 block of George Dieter Drive, and started shooting his dog with the Orbeez gun. The graphic video shows the small white dog hiding in a corner of a kitchen. The shooter is not seen in the video, but is heard saying, "Look these (expletive) hurt, look." He then began shooting at the dog. Spanky survived its injuries. Law N' Paws Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization founded by an El Paso police detective, provides foster care for pets in animal abuse cases and has custody of the dog. Spanky suffered "multiple injuries and (is) emotionally shaken," the nonprofit posted on Instagram. They added that Spanky is "underweight, scared, and currently receiving the care he desperately needs at East El Paso Animal Hospital." Ortega was arrested on an animal cruelty charge. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on Friday, June 6 on a $4,000 bond, jail records show. He posted bail and was released the same day, jail logs show. Orbeez gun leads to aggravated assault arrest in Siloam Springs
Siloam Springs, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A Gentry man was arrested on May 31 after allegedly pointing a toy gun at a woman in Siloam Springs, according to court documents. Donnovan Hayes, 18, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault. No formal charges have been filed as of June 5. According to a probable cause affidavit, police responded around 4:31 p.m. to a report of an individual with a gun in Siloam Springs. Officers found gray Ford Fusion matching the suspect vehicle description at the scene. After being briefly held at gunpoint, all three occupants in the Ford were detained without incident. A white object resembling a firearm, later identified as an Orbeez gun, fell from the vehicle as one person exited, according to the affidavit. An alleged victim, parked nearby, told police the front passenger, Hayes, pointed what appeared to be a gun at them, leaving her and her children frightened. According to the affidavit, that Hayes denied pointing the gun at the victim. Arkansas Hooters location among dozens closed following bankruptcy filing Hayes told officers he was participating in a game involving Orbeez guns, plastic toy guns that shoot soft gel pellets, with about 30 others in the Northwest Arkansas area. Players reportedly used the Life360 app to track each other during the game. The affidavit states Hayes claimed he intended to shoot another participant in the game, not Berry, and said the game included rules prohibiting players from shooting people who are not involved. The two other occupants in the Ford were released, and Hayes was taken to the Benton County Jail. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Nancy Wilson says two 'irreplaceable' instruments have been stolen ahead of Heart's tour
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Heart have revealed that two 'irreplaceable' instruments have been stolen from them, just as they were due to embark on their June tour. The band had set up at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on May 30, the day before the first show on their latest US jaunt but were 'devastated' to discover that two instruments had been taken from under their noses. A one-of-a-kind baritone Telecaster, featuring an intricately painted headstock custom-made for Nancy Wilson, and a vintage 1966 Gibson EM-50 mandolin that has been with the band for 25 years were both stolen. 'These instruments are more than just tools of our trade — they're extensions of our musical souls,' says Nancy Wilson. 'The baritone Tele was made uniquely for me, and Paul [Moak]'s mandolin has been with him for decades. We're heartbroken, and we're asking for their safe return—no questions asked. Their value to us is immeasurable.' Such is the personal value of the distinctive instruments that a reward is being offered to anyone with relevant information. Individuals with information can contact tour manager Tony Moon via email at tonymoon@ The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees are on the road with fellow hall of famers Cheap Trick, and Squeeze, celebrating 40 years since the release of their wildly successful self-titled album. Wilson recently reflected on the making of 1985's Heart, telling Guitar World, that while her beloved acoustic guitar had been the cornerstone of the band's sound, she felt 'pressured' by producer Ron Nevison to ditch the acoustics if they wanted to resonate with the contemporary audience. '[Heart] revitalized the band,' she explained in the same piece. 'It took us up to a whole other level of global success, so there's nothing I regret about what we did or where we compromised.' The latest dates come after they were forced to cancel a 2024 tour, as Ann Wilson revealed she was undergoing cancer treatment. The singer promised they'd be back in 2025, and she has been true to her word. It makes the theft of the two instruments even more heartbreaking. Guitar World hopes they return to the band – as Nuno Bettencourt found following the onstage theft of his prized Washburn, sometimes these stories can have a happy ending.
