Shamal George will make Scottish football return with St Mirren a family affair

Daily Record29-07-2025
The big keeper has joined the Buddies on a season-long loan from Wycombe Wanderers.
Shamal George insists his move to St Mirren will be a family affair once his best Buddies join him north of the border.

The 27-year-old keeper made his debut for Saints in Sunday's 2-1 win over Ayr United in the Premier Sports Cup after joining on a season-long loan from Sky Bet League One side Wycombe Wanderers.

George is up here on his own just now with fiancee Anna and six-month-old twins Mateo and Alani-Rae still at their home in Oxford.

However, that will all change in the coming weeks – and ex-Livingston custodian George admits he wants them by his side as he begins his Paisley adventure.
'They're not up here with me yet,' he said. 'The kids are sleeping well but it's a bit tough leaving them. But they are coming up in two or three weeks. We've got a boy and a girl – twins! They are Mateo and Alani-Rae.
'At first, they weren't sleeping well but now it's a bit better. The thought of leaving the kids made it a difficult decision to come up here.

'We were living in Oxford so that's a seven-hour drive. It was tough to leave them when I did but I've got to get game time for my career so this was one I couldn't sit on.
'They are coming up here to be with me for the 10 months I'm here; I couldn't do without them.'
George explained the reasons for last summer's switch from the Lions to Buckinghamshire.

He said: 'At Livingston, the first year was really good. I really enjoyed it, it's a good club and really good group of lads. The second year didn't go to plan when we got relegated.
'I wanted to get back to England because my fiancee Anna was pregnant so we needed more help down the road.'
George's move to Wycombe turned into a nightmare when he suffered a horror injury during the 2-0 FA Cup win over Portsmouth in January.

'Last season was tough for me but I'm happy to be back playing football,' he said. 'My groin came off my bone and I had a hernia on the same side so, not ideal. I got injured in the first seven minutes. I kicked the ball and heard the pop. It was very painful.
'We had great physios at Wycombe, they made it fly by – and obviously having kids, they came around the time I got injured. I could spend a bit more time when them. It made my time out injured that bit easier.'
George has enjoyed a full pre-season so is raring to go and looking forward to working with boss Stephen Robinson and goalkeeping coach Jamie Langfield.

He added: 'I had to get game time this season. I believe St Mirren had been after me for a while so I spoke to the gaffer and Langers.
'They called me and what they had to say really interested me. I was happy to come back to the Scottish league and get valuable minutes.'
Meanwhile, Saints' Slovak stopper Peter Urminsky has joined Northern Irish Premiership side Glentoran on a season-long loan meaning George and Ryan Mullen will be the first-team keepers at the SMiSA Stadium going forward.

The Valsvöllur in Reykjavik is a modest community stadium with only one stand, a capacity of 2,465 people, and often an icy swirling wind. Until last week, it was home to Tómas Bent Magnússon. One can only imagine what went through the Icelandic midfielder's mind stepping out into a tumultuous Tynecastle Park on Monday night. An initial five-figure transfer fee took the 22-year-old from Valur Reykjavik to Hearts as took the chance to experience Scottish football. For the opening Premiership fixture against Aberdeen, Tynecastle was at its quintessentially Scottish best: Raucous, hostile, intimidating, electric. You know the scene. Magnusson loved every second of his new team's 2-0 victory. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He replaced Lawrence Shankland in stoppage-time for a Hearts debut which was as memorable as it was brief. 'It's a weight lifted off my shoulders,' he said. 'I can't really sum it up. It happened all really quickly and I'm just really happy that I made my debut. I can't wait to move on to the next game. It was crazy. The fans were crazy. I've never experienced like this before but it's great. If it's like this in every game, I can't wait for the next one. 'Getting off to a winning start, that's the most important thing. It's a big club. The Scottish Premiership is a big league as well. When I heard that they wanted me, I couldn't really hesitate about coming out.' Magnusson did some research before leaving his homeland and held talks with the Hearts sporting director, Graeme Jones, and head coach Derek McInnes. 'Yeah, after the contact was made with Valur back home, I spoke to the gaffer and Graeme as well. They just told me what the plan was with the club and how they see everything moving forward,' he explained. Hearts transfer delay for another new signing While prospective signing Pierre Landry Kabore, a Burkina Faso internationalist, has been in Edinburgh for a month and is still awaiting a UK work permit, Magnusson's visa came through swiftly. He found out just hours before Monday's fixture that he would be involved. 'Monday morning, just when the offices were open. I was pretty hopeful it would happen. Most of the guys have got their visa pretty quickly, except Kabore, so I was hopeful,' he said. He is a low-maintenance type who enjoys a humble approach to his work. Standing 6ft 2ins tall, he carries an aerial threat at set-pieces and is likely to enjoy the frenetic nature of the Scottish league. He also has ambitions to lift silverware in a maroon shirt. 'I'm a guy who gives it his all, a ball-winner. I get up and down the field and just do what I'm asked to do,' said the player. 'I want to achieve a lot here. We've got ambitions for everything and obviously every player wants to win titles. That's what we want to do.'

Liverpool make final transfer decision on Marc Guehi after two bids rejected

Marc Guehi remains a Crystal Palace player for now but Premier League champions Liverpool are admirers of the England centre-back and have attempted two transfer bids Liverpool have no plans to return with a third Marc Guehi bid after seeing two approaches rebuffed, it has been claimed. Crystal Palace have been playing hardball over their captain, with England star Guehi one of a number of in-demand Eagles stars. ‌ Palace appear determined to keep hold of as many senior figures as possible as they gear up for a European campaign. Ebere Eze remains a target for Arsenal, while plenty of clubs are known to be fans of Jean-Philippe Mateta and Liverpool aren't the only admirers of Guehi. ‌ Newcastle and Tottenham made efforts to sign the defender last summer, but he stayed at Selhurst Park and helped Palace win the FA Cup. Guehi is in the final year of his contract, but that hasn't seen his team entertain a sale on the cheap. ‌ According to Foot Mercato (via Sport Witness), Palace still want close to £48m for their skipper. Neither of Liverpool's two offers have hit that mark, and the Reds are now said to be ready to look at alternative targets. Arne Slot's side do still need bodies at centre-back, having sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. Ibrahima Konate has yet to agree an extension to his current deal, which expires next summer, while Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have just two years left on their respective deals. Palace and Liverpool are due to face off in Sunday's Community Shield, after winning the FA Cup and Premier League respectively last term. The match will provide a chance for Guehi to remind the league champions of his quality, though he is not expected to look to force a move away. Oliver Glasner's side geared up for the match with a double header against Augsburg, winning one meeting and losing te other. Liverpool also had a double header at the start of the month, winning both games against Athletic Club at Anfield. 'The guys are in top shape; they obviously know the drills. That makes it easy," Palace boss Glasner said after his team's final friendly. "Now it's just a matter of getting match-fit. That's why they needed 90 minutes of exercise in their legs. ‌ 'We actually had another friendly match planned… but now we have a Community Shield against Liverpool instead! But of course, we're happy to take that. You could say it could be worse!" Liverpool boss Slot has been impressed with the Reds' new arrivals as they look to make up for the departure of the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold. "We've lost with Trent a lot of creativity from the back," he said after the Athletic friendlies. "Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special – I think Flo [Florian Wirtz] has this quality as well in a totally different position. But he brings that creativity, the pace of Hugo [Ekitike], the pace of both full-backs – Milos [Kerkez] and Jeremie [Frimpong] today."

Benjamin Sesko's Man Utd or Newcastle call shouldn't boil down to manager 'reservations'

An ex-Premier League chairman has urged Benjamin Sesko to sign for Newcastle United over Ruben Amorim's Manchester United, despite having reservations over Magpies boss Eddie Howe in the past Simon Jordan has told Benjamin Sesko to head to St James' Park over Old Trafford, stating the RB Leipzig striker will have "less scrutiny" playing under Eddie Howe than Ruben Amorim. The former Crystal Palace chairman admits he had "reservations in the past" over the Newcastle manager, but he now believes the Carabao Cup winners are the right team for Sesko to thrive in. ‌ Newcastle and Manchester United are locked in a transfer battle to sign the 22-year-old. The two sides have submitted big bids to bring Sesko to their respective clubs. ‌ The Magpies struck first with a rejected offer before coming back with an improved proposal worth £70million plus add-ons. However, the Red Devils have lodged a bid of their own worth £65.1m plus a further £8.7m in add-ons, and a final decision from the Slovenian international looks to be imminent. ‌ Jordan appeared on talkSPORT to discuss the choice Sesko faces, admitting that if money weren't an issue, then Newcastle should be his prime destination. "If I were in his shoes, if the economics of the deal were that I wasn't being compromised financially by going to Newcastle over Manchester United, I think it's a great move," Jordan said, before he went on to discuss the former Bournemouth boss. "I think Eddie Howe is a brilliant manager – I had my reservations about him in the past – I've had conversations already. I like him very much, and I think he's done a brilliant job. "So I would be looking at Newcastle rather than Man United." Jordan went on to note that everything Sesko does would be looked at under a microscope when playing under Amorim at United, whereas he would have more freedom to grow while developing under Howe. Jordan added: "I think because Newcastle comes with expectation, but doesn't come with the same pressure that Man United comes from. ‌ "Whilst people focus on Newcastle, they focus on it because Newcastle makes a lot of noise, because it's a very passionate football club and the fans are very motivated by it. It doesn't have the day-to-day scrutiny that Man United has. "It doesn't matter what happens, you can fart in the corridor of Man United – that's heard around the world. It's not the same at Newcastle." ‌ United are reportedly confident that Sesko will be heading to the north west of England to add to their attacking line, having secured the signatures of Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and ex-Wolves man Matheus Cunha already this summer. Sesko, though, is considered a ready replacement at Newcastle for Alexander Isak, whose form has understandably caught the attention of Premier League champions Liverpool. The Reds have already submitted a £110m bid for the Swede – which has been rejected – but Howe looks destined to sell the wantaway star should the Magpies first land Sesko. The Red Devils are in yet another period of transition. In November 2024, they appointed former Sporting CP boss Amorim to help the club compete back in the European places of the Premier League, but another disappointing campaign last season saw them ultimately finish in 15th and without a trophy. ‌ Meanwhile, Newcastle are on the up after securing their first piece of silverware in 70 years in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool. They finished fifth last year in the Premier League and are set to compete in the Champions League once again this season. Meanwhile, United will be without European football this campaign after losing the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. All of these things may well factor into Sesko's decision to pick black and white or Manchester red, with both sets of fans eagerly awaiting to see his choice made soon.
