NCERT forms expert panel to review Class 8 map after feedback on Maratha Empire depiction
In response to recent feedback and concerns raised over textbook content—most notably the depiction of parts of Rajasthan under the Maratha Empire in a Class 8 social science textbook—the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced the formation of a high-level expert committee.
The move, NCERT said in a formal press release, is in line with its well-established practice of undertaking review whenever substantial academic or public input is received.
'These curricular resources, including textbooks, receive regular feedback and suggestions from various stakeholders,' the council said, noting that such feedback is essential for improving content quality.
The press release emphasised that the committee will consist of domain experts from reputed institutions and relevant NCERT faculty, and will be convened by the Head of the Curriculum Department.
The panel is expected to examine the content in question in light of 'available evidence' and recommend corrective action at the earliest possible time.
Background: Class 8 map sparks historical dispute
The committee formation comes amid growing debate over a map featured in the new Class 8 social science textbook, which shows parts of western Rajasthan, including Jaisalmer, as being under the Maratha Empire. The most prominent objection came from Chaitanya Raj Singh of Jaisalmer, who argued that 'no authentic historical sources' suggest Maratha control over Jaisalmer and called the portrayal 'factually baseless and historically misleading.

In an earlier clarification, Michel Danino, Chairperson of NCERT's curricular group for social science, acknowledged that the map was based on previously published maps in the public domain and developed with expert consultation. He explained that such maps depict not only areas under direct rule, but also those that had tributary or political arrangements with the Marathas, reflecting the complex and fluid nature of historical boundaries.
He also conceded that while the Class 7 textbook includes a disclaimer about the approximate nature of historical borders, this caveat was mistakenly omitted from the Class 8 textbook—something he said should have been included to avoid misinterpretation.
NEP-aligned curriculum and open review mechanism
NCERT's current curriculum overhaul is a part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which led to the development of the National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education.
Aligned with these frameworks, NCERT has produced new teaching-learning materials, including textbooks. Officials stress that the review process ensures academic integrity and transparency.
'Evidence-based decisions are at the core of our process,' the council said, reaffirming its commitment to high-quality, research-driven educational content.
NCERT reiterated that the new committee is not limited to a single issue, but is being formed to examine feedback on educational content across a few textbooks. The expert panel will evaluate each case thoroughly and submit a consolidated report for necessary action.

Arms licences to indigenous people will only be given after proper evaluation: Himanta
Amid criticism over the Assam government 's decision to provide arms licence to indigenous people , Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said it will only be given after "proper evaluation". Speaking to reporters, Sarma said land rights also needed to be ensured for the indigenous people, along with arms licences . If you don't have a gun, how will you stay in South Salmara-Mankachar and Bagbar? If you go there, you will understand," he said on the sidelines of a programme in Baksa, when asked about the criticism over the "lenient" arms licence policy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like With temperatures hitting 95°F, this is the mini air conditioner everyone's buying in the U.S News of the Discovery "There are 20,000-25,000 people surrounding it, and 100 people are staying in a 'Satra' (Vaishnavite seat of learning) amid them. They will need something," he claimed. Sarma maintained that gun licences will be provided only after due evaluation and verification. Live Events "Guns are needed, land is needed, rights are needed. But everything has to be within the purview of the law, not outside it," he added. The state cabinet had on May 28 decided that the government would give arms licences to indigenous people living in "vulnerable and remote" areas for instilling a sense of security in them. Sarma had identified Dhubri, Morigaon, Barpeta, Nagaon and South Salmara-Mankachar districts, and localities like Rupahi, Dhing and Jonia as "vulnerable and remote". All these areas are largely dominated by Bengali-speaking Muslims. The opposition claims that the decision is aimed at polarising the people, and has the potential to jeopardise the state's hard-won peace. Asked about possible eviction drives in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), where Baksa is located, Sarma said there is no proposal at the moment as indigenous people of the area are yet to get their land ownership documents. "Eviction drives were started in the rest of the state only after land rights were settled under 'Mission Basundhara'. In BTR, first indigenous and rightful residents have to get the 'patta'. After that, we can go for eviction," he said. Claiming that the situation was as "grave in BTR as in the rest of Assam", Sarma said, "Every time I am here, I see that the vote of a certain community is increasing. And if it continues to happen, the Bodos and other people of BTR who have sacrificed for this land will not have the political power in their hands." Dismissing criticism against the eviction drives, he said, "Miya Muslims have gone to upper Assam, north Assam, to change the demography of the state. We will have to take legal steps against them, evict them as per the law. I am not bothered who says what about it." 'Miya' is originally a pejorative term used for Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam, and the non-Bengali speaking people generally identify them as Bangladeshi immigrants. In recent years, activists from the community have started adopting this term as a gesture of defiance. PTI

Trump's DOJ defends Obama-era policy to give work permits to spouses of H-1B migrants: Report
Trump DOJ defends policy to give work permits to the spouses of H-1B workers. Donald Trump's Department of Justice said in a court-ordered response that the Attorney General can give work permits to migrants even though Congress explicitly bars the hiring of illegal migrants, Breitbart reported. This response came in the context of a 2015 lawsuit, launched by American professionals against then-president Barack Obama's 2015 decision to provide work permits to the spouses of the H-1B workers Obama's deputies, at that time, defended that this helped companies to retain workers imported from India and other nations. In its legal brief submitted Friday, the Justice Department also said that American professionals should not be allowed to sue the government over the 2015 decision as they can't prove that they suffer direct economic harm from the additional foreign workers (the spouses of H-1Bs). What are H-1B, H-4 and H4EADs? Unpacking the 2015 case H-1B is the visa program that allows US companies to hire foreign skilled workers. H4 is the visa that the spouses of H-1B visa workers carry. In 2015, the Obama administration agreed with business requests to provide work permits to H4s, known as Employment Authorization Documents (EADs). This work permit for the spouses of H-1Bs is known as H4EADs. John Miano, a lawyer at the Center for Immigration Studies, is behind the lawsuit. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mix 3 Kitchen Ingredients, Wake Up Thinner Every Morning Get Fit Today Click Here Undo The Supreme Court asked the Justice Department for its statement before deciding whether to take up Miano's lawsuit after it was denied by the DC appeals court. According to Miano, there are roughly 250,000 H4EAD workers in U.S. white-collar jobs and the vast majority are the wives of the Indian visa workers. Miano told Breitbard that the H4EAD program is especially bad because the spouses take lower-level jobs that would otherwise go to new American graduates. 'Do you know C++' Miano said in the 1990s when he was into programming, a New York bank wanted to hire him as a technology consultant but the route was through an Indian vendor who interviewed him for the role. Miano told Breitbart that he was asked whether he knew C++, he said yes but the bank later told him that the vendor who interviewed him said he did not know C++. "The Indian firm was 'hoping that by keeping me out, they might keep the next person out too, so that the bank's only choice would be to hire one of the Indians,' said Miano, sharing his personal experience.

People recognise work, not name: Eknath Shinde on reunion of Thackeray cousins
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said the coming together of estranged cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray was "good for democracy", but also sent a strong message that people support those who work for their welfare. In a video interview to PTI, Shinde remarked that Uddhav Thackeray had once dismissed his cousin Raj, who made a dramatic exit from the Shiv Sena in 2005 after being sidelined, and it was ironic for the two to reunite. Raj was expelled from the Shiv Sena. The same people who had questioned his (Raj's) influence are now thinking of joining hands again. It is a good thing. In an electoral democracy, anyone can join hands with anybody," Shinde said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Shooter Action MMO Crossout Play Now Undo He said anyone can go anywhere, it is their personal choice, but people support those who work for them and think about their welfare. "People recognise the work and not the 'name'. People have decided who works for them and who sits at home. People make those people sit at home who like to sit at home," Shinde said in an apparent reference to Uddhav Thackeray. Live Events Shinde toppled Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government of Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP, contending that Thackeray had abandoned the principles of Hindutva espoused by Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray. He walked out with more than two-thirds of Sena MLAs and MPs in June 2022 and later earned the tag of 'real' Shiv Sena from the Election Commission. The Thackeray cousins shared the stage in Mumbai last month for a "victory rally" after the Maharashtra government rolled back its controversial three-language policy that made learning Hindi mandatory in primary schools. The coming together of the Thackeray cousins is keenly watched after the shock defeat of Shiv Sena-UBT in the Maharashtra Assembly elections last year as the party managed to win only 20 seats of the 100 it had contested as part of an alliance with the Congress and NCP-SP. The upcoming elections to the Mumbai municipal corporations is seen as an existential battle for Uddhav Thackeray as Shinde looks to dominate politics in the financial capital of the country. "In a democracy, anybody can form a coalition. I am not going to criticise anyone on that count. But, I only want to state that during my two-and-a-half years' tenure as chief minister, a number of decisions were taken by me and Devendra Fadnavis for the development of Mumbai and Maharashtra," Shinde said. Asked about Uddhav Thackeray calling him 'gaddar' (traitor), Shinde hit back saying it was Thackeray who betrayed the ideals of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray. "The word 'gaddar' he uses for me, actually fits him very well. In 2019, the people had given the mandate to the BJP and Shiv Sena. He (Uddhav Thackeray) betrayed that mandate and joined hands with the Congress and NCP. He is the real culprit," Shinde said. He said Thackeray had insulted the mandate of the people in 2019 and the voters taught him a good lesson in the 2024 assembly elections.
