"Guns are required. If you don't have a gun, how will you stay in South Salmara-Mankachar and Bagbar? If you go there, you will understand," he said on the sidelines of a programme in Baksa, when asked about the criticism over the "lenient" arms licence policy.

Sarma maintained that
gun licences
will be provided only after due evaluation and verification.

"Guns are needed, land is needed, rights are needed. But everything has to be within the purview of the law, not outside it," he added.
The state cabinet had on May 28 decided that the government would give arms licences to indigenous people living in "vulnerable and remote" areas for instilling a sense of security in them.
Sarma had identified Dhubri, Morigaon, Barpeta, Nagaon and South Salmara-Mankachar districts, and localities like Rupahi, Dhing and Jonia as "vulnerable and remote". All these areas are largely dominated by Bengali-speaking Muslims.
The opposition claims that the decision is aimed at polarising the people, and has the potential to jeopardise the state's hard-won peace.
Asked about possible
eviction drives
in
Bodoland Territorial Region
(BTR), where Baksa is located, Sarma said there is no proposal at the moment as indigenous people of the area are yet to get their land ownership documents.
"Eviction drives were started in the rest of the state only after land rights were settled under 'Mission Basundhara'. In BTR, first indigenous and rightful residents have to get the 'patta'. After that, we can go for eviction," he said.
Claiming that the situation was as "grave in BTR as in the rest of Assam", Sarma said, "Every time I am here, I see that the vote of a certain community is increasing. And if it continues to happen, the Bodos and other people of BTR who have sacrificed for this land will not have the political power in their hands."
Dismissing criticism against the eviction drives, he said, "Miya Muslims have gone to upper Assam, north Assam, to change the demography of the state. We will have to take legal steps against them, evict them as per the law. I am not bothered who says what about it."
'Miya' is originally a pejorative term used for Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam, and the non-Bengali speaking people generally identify them as Bangladeshi immigrants. In recent years, activists from the community have started adopting this term as a gesture of defiance. PTI

Canada charts an Express Entry reset for 2026: A ‘leadership and innovation' category to be introduced
This is an AI-generated image, used for representational purposes only. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the immigration agency of the Canadian government, has issued a draft for public consultation focused on the future of the Express Entry system, which is a popular pathway to permanent residency, especially for Indians. As per the discussion draft, the Express Entry system would continue to focus on addressing long-term labour market shortages and bolstering Francophone immigration outside Quebec. The most significant proposal is the introduction of an entirely new stream – the 'Leadership and Innovation' category, which would give preference to senior managers, researchers, and scientists with the potential to drive Canada's competitiveness. Through the Express Entry system, Canada is also eyeing potential talent for its armed forces by facilitating the recruitment of highly skilled military personnel from allied countries. Such a move, IRCC's discussion paper states, would help maintain a 'robust, world-class' defence force. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The state of AI infrastructure: 2025 research report CIO | Google Cloud, AMD Undo Express Entry is Canada's point-based mechanism used to manage immigration applications for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents. Based on various parameters such as age, education, French language proficiency etc, candidates are given a Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS). Post this, they are placed in the Express Entry pool and ranked relative to each other. Periodical draws (the emphasis is now on category-based draws) are held and those attaining the cut-off CRS score get an invitation to apply for permanent residency. According to Talha Mohani, a regulated Canadian immigration consultant and managing partner at Migration Bureau Canada, the policies should also focus on job creation. 'The 'Leadership and Innovation' category must explicitly include proven entrepreneurs and investor founders. The Express Entry's category mechanism should ideally invite higher-impact business immigrants (senior managers, founders with traction, investor families) into dedicated draws. In parallel, there is a need to introduce a 'temporary business resident pathway' granting temporary status with healthcare and education access to dependents while the entrepreneur meets measurable milestones (based on job creation and/or investments) to achieve permanent residence,' he told TOI. Labour shortages remain a priority: The discussion draft acknowledges Canada's ongoing struggle to fill skilled positions in healthcare, the skilled trades (particularly construction roles critical to boosting housing supply), education, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and agriculture. It adds that tackling these shortages is vital. Through the consultation process, IRCC is seeking input on whether Express Entry should focus more on transitioning skilled temporary residents already in Canada to permanent status, or on recruiting from overseas, especially in sectors such as healthcare and skilled trades. According to Ken Nickel-Lane, a regulated Canadian immigration consultant and founder of an immigration services firm, 'The focus on those already in Canada already continues to make good sense, given issues around housing and healthcare. Category-based selection draws are still fundamentally a good approach to addressing near-term needs for specific skills shortages across the country, but the categories should be reviewed more frequently.' In March 2025, Canada removed the additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points awarded for job offers under the Express Entry system. Prior to this change, job offers could grant candidates either 50 or 200 extra points Nickel-Lane states that'Prioritising the selection of senior managers should not merely translate to creating another category for Express Entry draws for those outside Canada. Rather, points for job offers should be resumed for those already in the country on work permits under the International Mobility Program - these are the people companies need here long term to build on their growth plans.' Francophone immigration targets: The discussion draft reaffirms Canada's commitment to boosting Francophone immigration outside Quebec, which the government sees as a driver of both cultural diversity and economic strength. Manish Kapoor, a regulated Canadian immigration consultant, points out that since the introduction of category-based draws in 2023, the Francophone stream has grown at the fastest pace, recording the highest numbers within category-based selection and accounting for a substantial portion of immigration targets. 'While I do not oppose this focus, I suggest reinstating transport occupations in the category-based draws, as its contributions to the national economy are significant. I believe IRCC should consider adjusting next year's targets to conduct STEM, transport, and trades draws,' he told TOI. The road ahead: IRCC is calling for public feedback on these proposals through September, with final decisions expected in late fall 2025, parallel to the unveiling of the 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan. The immigration levels plan at present has set the targets at 3.95 lakh permanent residents in 2025; 3.80 lakh for 2026; and aims to have a further reduced target of 3.65 lakh in 2027. It also supports efforts to reduce temporary resident volumes to 5% of Canada's population by the end of 2026. The number of temporary residents in Canada has grown exponentially over the last few years, from about 437,000 individuals in 2019 alone to about 1.2 million (12 lakhs) in 2023.

Oppn's ‘bulk' objections to SIR not entertained: EC
Patna: The Election Commission (EC) has defended its handling of Bihar's special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying objections from opposition parties were not entertained as they were sent "in bulk" rather than individually, as required under the prescribed procedure. The EC said such submissions could not be processed under the formal "claims and objections" mechanism, but were being treated as general complaints and verified accordingly. The clarification came after the opposition INDIA bloc accused the EC of "doing politics" and attempting to set a "narrative" that no political party had submitted complaints about the draft voter roll published on Aug 1. The EC's latest bulletin on Tuesday reiterated that no "claims or objections" had been filed by any of the 12 recognised national and state parties in the 11 days since publication. However, the EC confirmed receiving 13,970 claims and objections directly from individual electors, 341 of which have already been disposed of. Leader of the opposition in Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Pratap Yadav, said the bloc was not questioning the SIR itself but the manner in which it was carried out. "We are not questioning the special intensive revision, rather the way it was carried out. There could be no bigger crime than an elector missing the chance to cast their vote," he said, alleging that many names had been deleted from the rolls, while some electors lacked documents or were living outside the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Ukraine Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. Tejashwi also claimed the EC had repeatedly ignored Supreme Court guidance and accused it of misusing its position as a constitutional body. Referring to deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha allegedly possessing two EPICs, he said, "Nobody would have perhaps known that if I had not exposed it." Congress legislature party leader in the assembly, Shakeel Ahmad Khan, alleged that "an uncountable number" of claims and objections had been sent to the EC, which he accused of "denying reality." He said Rahul Gandhi's request for an appointment to present proof of "vote chori" was declined. RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan argued that the opposition had sought a category-wise list of voters marked as dead, shifted or duplicated, but had not received it, making it difficult for party agents to file claims or objections in the required format. CPI-ML state secretary Kunal claimed hundreds of objections had been filed through booth-level and local committees, citing one complaint about the deletion of 63 names under the Jale Assembly constituency. He alleged that the EC was "trying to set a narrative" that nothing was wrong with the rolls. An EC official, however, maintained that parties had failed to follow the stipulated procedure. "They were supposed not to send the claims/objections in bulk but one by one. So they were not entertained," the official said, adding that the submissions were now being reviewed as general complaints to verify their authenticity. We will prove once again that western region is AIADMK's stronghold: EPS
EPS addressing people in Krishnagiri on Tuesday . KRISHNAGIRI: AIADMK will once again prove that the western region is its stronghold, said party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday. Palaniswami was responding to DMK leader and chief minister M K Stalin's comment on Monday that the AIADMK's loss in the upcoming assembly election would begin in the western region. 'We will once again demonstrate that the western region is the stronghold of the AIADMK in the assembly elections. It was under the AIADMK rule that numerous projects, including the Smart Project valued at Rs 1,000 crore, were executed in Coimbatore and Tirupur municipal corporations," EPS said while speaking at Krishnagiri town. He said while DMK may be the ruling party, AIADMK holds the power in Coimbatore. "We have established ourselves as a formidable party by securing 80% of the votes in the western region during the 2021 elections," he said. EPS said 15 lakh medical camps had been conducted during the AIADMK's decade-long governance. 'Now, a label has been affixed to that initiative. With seven months remaining for the elections, they have launched a project named Nalam Kakkum Stalin. Likewise, they have announced that 46 public grievances will be addressed through the Ungaludan Stalin initiative. These are merely gimmicks by Stalin,' EPS asserted. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRI in Ukraine?
