Turkey thwarted another attack with pagers in Lebanon last year, officials say
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's intelligence service thwarted a remote attack using pagers last year in Lebanon, days after similar attacks by Israel killed dozens and wounded thousands, including members of Lebanon's Hezbollah group , a Turkish daily and officials said Tuesday.
Daily Sabah reported that 1,300 pagers and 710 chargers rigged with explosives were confiscated inside a cargo shipment at Istanbul Airport that was on its way to Beirut from Hong Kong.
A Turkish security official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, confirmed the report but would not provide further details.
In Beirut, Hezbollah's chief spokesman Youssef el-Zein told The Associated Press Tuesday that days after the Sept. 17 pagers attack in Lebanon and Syria, Hezbollah informed Turkish intelligence that a shipment of pagers was in Turkey and about to be sent to Lebanon.
El-Zein said Turkish authorities confiscated the pagers and most likely destroyed them. He had no further details.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.
Israel triggered the Sept. 17 attack when pagers all over Lebanon started beeping. The devices exploded even if a person carrying one failed to push buttons to read an incoming encrypted message.
The next day, Israel activated walkie-talkies , some of which exploded at funerals for some of the people who were killed in the pager attacks.
The attacks marked a major escalation in the Israel-Hezbollah war that started after Hamas launched its attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, triggering the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. Although the Lebanon attack struck many Hezbollah members, civilians were also killed or wounded. At least 37 people were killed, including two children, and some 3,000 were wounded in the two-day explosions.
Daily Sabah said that acting on a tip that a shipment of pager devices would be in Istanbul to be delivered to Lebanon two days after the attacks, Turkish intelligence agents launched an operation.
The newspaper said that authorities discovered a shipment that arrived in Istanbul from Hong Kong one day before the Lebanon explosions. The cargo had 61 boxes and was scheduled to depart from Istanbul to Beirut on Sept. 27 through Istanbul Airport. The cargo was described as a shipment of food choppers, Daily Sabah said. Inside, authorities found 1,300 Gold Apollo brand pagers and 710 desktop chargers.
After the pagers attack, Israel expanded the war against Hezbollah with strikes that killed nearly 500 people on Sept. 23, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. On Sept. 27, Israeli airstrikes on a southern suburb of Beirut killed Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah's leader and one of its founding members, in the biggest blow for the Iran-backed group.
The war ended on Nov. 27, when a U.S.-brokered ceasefire went into effect.

Members of a family with Joplin ties grieving the fatal shootings of 26-year-old Sarah Milgrim and her boyfriend, Yaron Lischinsky, 30, say there is no healing to be accomplished for victims of terrorism while lives are taken because of hate. Robert Milgrim, formerly of Joplin, said he and his family are still processing the deaths May 21 of his daughter and Lischinsky as they left an event at the Capital Jewish Museum. The two had attended a discussion involving young professionals on ways to get humanitarian aid safely to Gazans. The pair worked for the Israeli Embassy and planned to have careers in diplomacy. When they emerged from the museum, they were shot by a man identified as a far-left activist who shouted 'Free Palestine' as he was taken into custody at the scene. The Milgrim family has been left in 'total devastation and loss. We were so close' to Sarah, her father said. She was a young woman who was devoted to faith, family and helping those in the Middle East toward stability and peace. 'We have to get rid of this hate that's in the world,' Robert Milgrim told the Globe by telephone on Thursday. 'Killing somebody does not accomplish anything.' Palestinians are starving and without other necessities in the wake of hostilities that started Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas, an Arab/Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, a U.S.-designated terrorist group, attacked Israel. 'The reason Israel is trying to control aid (sent for Gaza) is that a large portion was hijacked by Hamas and they sell it on the black market,' Robert Milgrim said. His wife, Nancy Milgrim, said in an interview of the family aired Wednesday on CBS that she didn't know anything about the support expressed for the shooter from pro-Palestinians in the U.S. 'I don't know anything about that, but Sarah wasn't against the Palestinians; she wasn't against the people in Gaza. 'Christians have a great relationship with both Israel and Arabs,' Gladden said, although people need to be respectful of the political and religious differences. The Holy Land is a significant holy site for a number of religions. There is a small population of Arabs who are anti-Israel. The city of Bethlehem is Joplin's sister city. Gladden said a former longtime mayor of Bethlehem was Christian, but the population there has changed and the city is now overseen by Muslims. 'The answers (to violence) in the region are complex. It's such a long-standing, deep cultural situation and, frankly it's very difficult to eliminate that,' Gladden said. 'But we pray that it will become peaceful. The old city of Jerusalem is divided into four sectors and we pray for the peace of Jerusalem.' Paul Teverow, a retired Missouri Southern State University history professor who is a member of United Hebrew Congregation of Joplin, said the murders were devastating. 'First of all when you read about something like what happened in Washington, D.C., to Sarah Milgrim and her partner, how can you not be both devastated and appalled? and then, when I saw the name Milgrim I realized that might be someone I know or in my circle of associates. That was really devastating to me.' Robert Milgrim grew up in Joplin, one of three sons of Ben Milgrim, a well-known businessman who operated Milgrim's Pawn Shop on Main Street. Milgrim's was a popular store, often drawing tourists and people from other areas to shop and find treasures. Ben Milgrim died in 2010 at the age of 100. He was a member of the United Hebrew Congregation, B'nai B'rith, Joplin Elks Lodge #501 for over 65 years, Joplin Masonic Lodge, a 32nd-degree Mason and was a life member of the National Rifle Association and the Joplin Pistol Club. Teverow said of the Hebrew Congregation, 'We have received overwhelming support from the community over the years and never had any threats or messages of hostility here.' There have been Jewish families in Joplin for about 150 years and the Hebrew synagogue has been here more than a century, Teverow said. Robert Milgrim, known as Bob, grew up in Joplin and graduated in 1970 from Memorial High School. After graduating college and earning his law degree, he moved to the Kansas City area where he worked in the ERISA division of the U.S. Department of Labor. ERISA regulates retirement and health insurance funds. He said he and his family have received much support from his Joplin classmates and friends as well as people across the country. 'We have gotten many, many cards. The mailman has brought bundles' nearly every day since the tragedy. 'Many are from people I went to high school with and people I was very close with in Joplin. And many are from people we don't know. We are getting flowers and meals from people we don't know too.' 'A lot of people are mourning' with the family, he said. 'The embassy has received thousands of messages, cards and emails, and they are compiling something,' to celebrate the lives of the two lost to a hate crime.

The Coastal District Commander, Commissioner Yechiel Bohadana, arrived at the scene to conduct a situational assessment with police commanders on the site to search for the son, a man in his 30s. The suspect was arrested and is now in police custody.

Iran is also involved in high-stakes nuclear talks with the US. Iranian state media said on June 7 that Iran's foreign minister reached out to Egypt. This comes just a week after he visited Egypt. 'Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatt, held a telephone conversation in which they discussed bilateral ties and regional developments, particularly the situation in Gaza,' Iran's state media IRNA said. 'The two foreign ministers also exchanged Eid al-Adha greetings. Araqchi visited Egypt earlier this week on Monday, where he met with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, his counterpart, and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi.' The Iranian diplomat also spoke with his Pakistani counterpart, Muhammad Ishaq Dar. They 'discussed bilateral ties, as well as the latest regional and international developments,' IRNA noted. They also spoke about Eid al-Adha. 'During the call, the top Iranian and Pakistani diplomats exchanged views on the continued Israeli aggression against Lebanon and Syria, stressing the need for unity and solidarity among the Islamic Ummah worldwide,' Iran's state media added. 'They also reviewed the latest state of bilateral relations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high-level consultations to strengthen cooperation between the two neighboring Muslim countries.' Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reached out to United Arab Emirates leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. 'President Masoud Pezeshkian and President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have congratulated each other on Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) in a telephone conversation on Friday,' IRNA noted. These calls are important. Iran's leadership didn't need to make all these calls for the holiday. Iranian state media is highlighting this to show how Iran has strong diplomatic connections. 'President Pezeshkian expressed his hope that the blessings of Eid al-Adha will pave the way for the spread of peace and ward off war from the region,' in his talks with the UAE. The UAE is a member of the Abraham Accords and a close partner of the US and the West. Iran wants to make sure that Gulf states will stand by it in nuclear talks. This is part of Iran's desire to use its more positive ties with Saudi Arabia to convince the US to do a deal. Gulf countries want a deal; they don't want conflict that could undermine their economies or threaten their place as hubs of travel in the region. Iran spoke to the UAE about the importance of the holiday and Muslim unity. 'Pointing to the need to strengthen unity and convergence among Islamic countries, Pezeshkian prayed to God Almighty for happiness, health, and increasing success for the Muslim people of the United Arab Emirates and the entire Islamic nation,' IRNA added. 'UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for his part, congratulated the government and noble nation of Iran on the arrival of Eid al-Adha and wished success for the two nations on this auspicious occasion.'
