Jyoti Malhotra, a 33-year-old vlogger from Haryana who was recently arrested on charges of espionage for Pakistan, had previously visited Kerala, between 2024 and 2025, on an official invitation from the state government, according to a newly surfaced RTI (right to information) response.

Malhotra participated in a tourism promotion initiative organized by the Kerala tourism department, which sponsored a group of social media influencers to boost the state's online presence as a travel hotspot.
The RTI reply confirms that the Kerala tourism department fully covered Malhotra's travel, accommodation, and itinerary expenses during her visit, reported by news agency ANI.
Kerala tourism minister PA Mohammed Riyas stated on Sunday that the Left-led state government and its ministers would never "knowingly" extend invitations or offer support to individuals involved in espionage.
His remarks came in response to questions about BJP leader K Surendran's claim that social media influencer Jyoti Malhotra, arrested in May for allegedly spying for Pakistan, had been invited to Kerala as part of a tourism promotion campaign.
Surendran, in a post on the social media platform X, referred to an RTI reply confirming Malhotra's invitation and questioned why "a Pak-linked spy's trip" was funded by Kerala Tourism.
The BJP leader had previously made similar allegations on X.
Rejecting these claims, Riyas stated that the government and its ministers would never knowingly invite a spy to the state and added that they were not afraid of such propaganda.
"We don't give any value to such propaganda as the people are with us," the minister said.
According to official records, Jyoti Malhotra visited Kannur, Kozhikode, Kochi, Alappuzha, and Munnar as part of the government's influencer collaboration programme between 2024 and 2025.

Her name appeared among several other digital creators who participated in the initiative between January 2024 and May 2025.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Malhotra had made multiple trips to Pakistan and had developed connections with officials linked to Pakistani intelligence agencies, including members of the Pakistan high commission. One of these officials was later expelled by India after their involvement was exposed.
Malhotra is among 12 people arrested in a coordinated crackdown across Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, linked to an alleged spy network that reportedly targeted Indian social media influencers to collect intelligence.
Her YouTube channel, Travel with Jo, features 487 videos, with a significant number showcasing her travels in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Thailand.
One of her earlier viral videos notably showed her wearing a traditional Kerala sari while attending a Theyyam performance in Kannur.

China protests Modi's birthday greetings for Dalai Lama

India should appreciate China's sensitivities on Tibetan issues, the country said Monday as it protested over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's greetings to the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday and the attendance of Indian ministers at the celebrations. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said: 'The 14th Dalai Lama is a political exile who has long engaged in anti-China separatist activities and seeks to separate Xizang from China under the cloak of religion.' China refers to Tibet as Xizang. 'India needs to be cognisant of the sensitivity of issues related to Xizang, see clearly the anti-China nature of the 14th Dalai Lama, honour the commitments India has made to China on issues related to Xizang, and stop using those issues to interfere in China's internal affairs. China has protested to India regarding its actions,' the spokesperson said.

Can't allow weaponisation of critical minerals: PM Modi at Brics

PM Modi at Brics NEW DELHI: Brics countries should work to make supply chains for critical minerals and technology secure and reliable, so that no country can use these resources for its own "selfish gain or as a weapon" against others, said PM Narendra Modi at the Rio summit. The remarks are significant as they come at a time the global community is grappling with China's dominance of critical minerals. Quad recently announced a critical minerals initiative to secure and diversify supply chains to prevent any economic coercion or price manipulation. Modi was speaking in the presence of Premier Li Qiang who represented China at the summit in the absence of President Xi Jinping . In April this year, amid a raging trade war with the US, China suspended export of some rare earth minerals sparking global concerns about its impact on advanced technology and security industries. The call for ensuring secure and reliable supply chains was one of the suggestions the PM made at the Brics session on strengthening multilateralism, economic issues and AI to turn the grouping into a guide for the multipolar world in the future. He said Brics' diversity and multipolarity is its greatest strength. Strengthening internal systems like the Brics New Development Bank (NDB) that would lend more credibility to the call for reformed multilateralism, collaboration in agricultural research for the benefit of Global South, creation of a Brics Science and Research Repository, and ensuring responsible AI were some of the other suggestions made by Modi in his address. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! "Global standards must be created that can verify the authenticity of digital content, so that we can identify the source of the content and maintain transparency and prevent misuse," said Modi, adding that India will organise an AI Impact Summit next year for improved cooperation between all countries. Modi said at a time when the global community faced uncertainty and challenges, the relevance of Brics was evident. "Global South has many hopes from us. To fulfil them, we must follow the principle of 'Lead by Example'. India is fully committed to working shoulder-to-shoulder with all our partners to achieve our common goals," Modi said. Addressing another session on climate, Modi said that under India's Brics presidency next year, the Indian govt will work to define Brics in a new form. "Brics will mean - Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability," he said, adding that for India, climate justice is no alternative but a moral duty. He underscored India's position that without tech transfer and affordable financing for countries in need, climate action will remain confined merely to climate talks.

Kolhapur farmer loses Rs 5L to crooks after son clicks on virtual firearms purchase link while downloading game on smartphone

Kolhapur: A farmer from Radhanagari tehsil lost Rs 5 lakh he had saved to buy cattle to cybercrooks after his Std VI son (11) downloaded a free game on his father's smartphone and clicked on the link to purchase virtual firearms to continue the game. The phone had a digital payment application linked to the number, which was allegedly used by fraudsters for the unauthorised transaction in May, police said. The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter through the transaction ID. Inspector Pravin Khanapure of the Kolhapur Cyber police said the farmer approached the police only on Sunday. "The crooks, also playing the game online, tricked the child into buying virtual firearms, and then hacked the Android phone to siphon off the money through a UPI-linked account," said Khanapure, adding, "The farmer only discovered the transactions when he checked his bank account to see how much more money he needed to buy the buffaloes, despite his family earning well from their dairy business. " The father had Rs 7 lakh in total in his UPI-linked account, of which only Rs 2 lakh remained, Khanapure said. The officer advised that even though the father had approached late, it's crucial to monitor transactions closely and report any suspicious activity to the police and banks immediately. "This prompt action can help block further transactions and prevent additional losses," he said. Cyber expert Makarand Mane advises, "Firstly, do not give a smartphone with a UPI-linked bank account to children. Secondly, ensure multiple security levels, such as passwords and regular password changes, and don't save passwords on the phone. Most importantly, educate children about digital scams and responsible phone use in the long term."
