Sabah Proposes Expanding Ethnic Language Teaching in Schools
He said the four major ethnic languages proposed are the Tatana language in Kuala Penyu, Kadazan Tangaa in Penampang, Murut Timugon in Tenom and Dusun Lotud in Tuaran.
The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) president said he, along with a delegation from Sabah, had held discussions with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and the Ministry of Education delegation last year.
'Yang Berhormat Fadhlina subsequently agreed for a special committee under the Ministry of Education to be established to study this proposal. I will continue to follow up on all efforts to realise this initiative.
'Up to now, the Kadazandusun language subject in schools has been based solely on the Bunduliwan Dusun dialect,' he said in a statement after officiating the Odou do Kaamatan celebration at Kampung Mahandoi here today.
Ewon said efforts to strengthen the ethnic language curriculum are ongoing initiatives involving various parties including the Kadazandusun Language Foundation (KLF), the Momogun National Congress (MNC), and the Sabah Ethnic Languages Association.
He said his ministry is also supporting the effort through the allocation of special funding to four ethnic language associations for the development of modules, workbooks and textbooks.
'The teaching of these four Sabah ethnic languages can be implemented on a pilot basis in selected schools. For example, in Kuala Penyu, teaching the Tatana language would be more appropriate compared to using the Bunduliwan dialect,' he said.
According to Ewon, Sabah could emulate the implementation of ethnic language education in government schools in Sarawak, which has piloted the teaching of the Iban and Bidayuh languages.
'Efforts in this direction are underway. A delegation from Sabah has also visited schools in Sarawak to observe first-hand the implementation of Bidayuh language teaching, in addition to the Iban language,' he said.

He said 113,282 foreign nationals have so far been recorded, mainly in plantations, with plans to extend the exercise to agriculture, manufacturing, mining and quarrying sectors. The minister clarified that the programme is unrelated to citizenship or permanent residency, adding that the Special Committee on Citizenship for Sabah has processed 1,247 applications since 2021 under separate provisions. Both ordinary supreme council members stated their intention to contest for the role soon after current Youth Chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan confirmed during a special supreme council meeting last Sunday that he would not seek re-election. Gira when contacted said he accepted the nomination after several party leaders proposed his name following Snowdan's decision. 'I humbly accepted the nomination, and I am prepared to offer my service and dedication to the party's youth wing,' he said. He expressed confidence that delegates would make an informed choice on the next Youth Chief, and pledged to strengthen the role of youth in PRS while contributing positively to Sarawak's development. 'My agenda includes nurturing and grooming youth leadership within the party; providing political training and mentorship for the younger generation; empowering the Youth members to be a positive and influential voice; equipping them with both hands-on skills and digital literacy to meet modern challenges; promoting PRS values in line with the vision of the GPS government and; supporting and participating in the development agendas of the Sarawak government, especially in uplifting the Dayak community,' he said. Chukpai, meanwhile, said his decision to contest stems from a commitment to amplify youth voices, address their concerns, and lead PRS in delivering for the Dayak community and all Sarawakians. He cited the inclusive leadership of the late party president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing as an enduring inspiration. 'PRS was founded in 2004 and its first Youth Chief was Datuk Mong Dagang, an Iban. The second Youth Chief was Datuk Liwan Lagang, an Orang Ulu and the third, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, an Iban. 'Therefore it would be ideal should the next Youth Chief post be held by either Orang Ulu or Bidayuh to reflect inclusive representation. This is ideal to ensure that the party remains inclusive,' he said. The Masing legacy should be carried forward to strengthen inter-ethnic cooperation and empower the party's structures for the future, he added. Chukpai highlighted his long involvement in PRS Youth since the party's formation in 2004, including serving as Central Youth Vice-Chief under Mong Dagang, Belaga Youth Chief from 2004 to 2016, and PRS Murum Division Chairman since 2016. 'Based on this record and my commitments, I am confident I can contribute significantly to strengthening PRS Youth Wings if given the opportunity,' he said. Candidates must secure eight divisional nominations to qualify for the post, he said, adding that he is actively engaging divisional leaders to build support, ensure transparency, and address grassroots concerns. 'I am optimistic that, with sustained engagement, we can meet the nominations in due course,' said Chukpai. His vision is to empower Dayak youth, unite communities through inclusive leadership, and strengthen PRS as a credible voice for Sarawak's future, with a focus on education, economic opportunities, social cohesion, and heritage preservation. By virtue of the position, the elected Youth chief would automatically be appointed as party Vice President. Sabah Bersatu demands zero tolerance on bullying and urgent education reform
Syafiqah KOTA KINABALU (Aug 13): 'Parents send their children to school to gain knowledge and learn self-discipline, not to get bullied, physically and mentally tortured, or worse—lose their lives,' declared Dayang Nor Syafiqah binti Abdul Hamid, Bersatu Sipitang Srikandi chief, in a powerful call to action on Wednesday. She was responding to the national outrage over the tragic death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir, which has exposed deep, systemic failures in safeguarding students—especially in boarding schools. 'No parent should ever have to bury their child and be left wondering if more could have been done to protect them. This is not an isolated incident— it is the result of a broken system that has failed to prioritise children's safety,' Syafiqah said. She added that she was deeply outraged and saddened that the alleged bullying, which led to this tragic incident, had taken place in a religious school — a place entrusted to nurture faith, discipline, and the highest standards of moral conduct among its students. She thus demanded the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Sabah Education Department (JPN Sabah) immediately adopt a zero-tolerance policy against bullying — and pair it with urgent, concrete reforms: 1. Mandatory CCTV installation in all hostel corridors and common areas. 2. Zero interference from schools in the filing of police reports. 3. Creation of a Student Protection & Bullying Response Unit under JPN Sabah. 4. Automatic post-mortem and legal inquest for any unnatural student death. 5. Deployment of more qualified counsellors and robust mental health support systems. 6. A prominently displayed Student Welfare Bill of Rights in all schools. 7. An Independent Review Panel to investigate serious incidents and publish findings. 'These are not optional measures. They are life-saving safeguards. Zara's death must be the turning point — not just another statistic in a growing list of preventable tragedies,' she said. Syafiqah also called for the introduction of a Parental Rights Charter, guaranteeing parents full access to incident records and eliminating barriers to lodging police reports. 'Every hour lost in reporting weakens investigations, destroys evidence, and denies justice. In Zara's case, the Attorney-General's Chambers has already flagged serious investigative gaps — this must never happen again,' she stressed. She urged leaders in the Sabah State Government and across political lines to act decisively, without delay. 'This is bigger than politics. This is about our children's lives, safety, and dignity. Zara deserved better. All our children do. Sabah Bersatu Srikandi will work with all stakeholders to make these reforms a reality—immediately,' Syafiqah concluded.
