IND vs ENG 5th Test: Why is Rishabh Pant not playing for India? Who will keep wickets?
India's vice-captain
Rishabh Pant
is not part of the playing XI for the final Test against England after suffering a broken foot during the fourth Test at Manchester. Despite the injury from Chris Woakes' yorker, Pant courageously returned to score 54 runs.
Taking his place in the India playing XI at The Oval is Dhruv Jurel. He had come in as the wicketkeeper when Pant had copped a blow to his index finger at Lord's and again at Old Trafford. This time, though, he will also hold responsibility with the bat.
How and why Rishabh Pant's England tour could come to an abrupt end due to toe fracture
Pant, meanwhile, had thanked supporters on Instagram and expressed his eagerness to return to cricket while beginning his rehabilitation process.
On social media, Pant shared his recovery journey: "Appreciate all the love and good wishes coming my way.
It's been a real source of strength. I will begin rehab once my fracture heals and I am slowly settling into the process. Staying patient, following routines and giving it my 100 per cent. Playing for the country has always been the proudest moment of my life. Can't wait to be back doing what I love."
The dramatic incident occurred on day one when Pant was struck by a toe-crushing yorker in the 68th over. Blood was visible when he removed his boot, and the pain forced him to leave the field on a golf cart at 37 runs.

However, he surprised everyone by returning the next day before lunch with India at 314/6.
In a remarkable display of determination, Pant hit his 90th Test six, equaling Virender Sehwag's record for India. He reached a gutsy half-century before Jofra Archer eventually dismissed him.
India's head coach Gautam Gambhir highly praised Pant's courage, stating, "One thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on something that Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well."
Later, BCCI named Narayan Jagadeesan as Pant's replacement for the final Test.
Pant, thereby, concludes his series with impressive 479 runs in four matches at an average of 68.42, including two centuries and three fifties.

Talking further on the dedicated approach of Ball, Williams said, 'Not only just from a like, 'Hey, let's go do this.' Which Is India's Greatest Overseas Test Win In The Modern Times?
Lord's, The Oval, or Gabba - Which is your favourite India Test win in the overseas? Let's be honest. The highlights of the Lord's Test match between England and India, edited with Udta Punjab track, and an animated Virat Kohli stationed in the slips, have an audience of their own. Kohli instructed his men to give the hosts hell for 60 overs on the field, and they obliged. With about 8 overs left in the second Test, Mohammed Siraj turned up and castled James Anderson. This was a historic win, one that has been etched in the memories of Test cricket connoisseurs. But you'd be surprised that Indian cricket fans don't rate Lord's triumph as their favourite Test win by India in a foreign land. Before we proceed any further, let's recap India's most memorable overseas Test wins in the past half a decade. The Oval, 2025 It's perhaps best to do the honours by reminiscing about India's most recent victory in the Tests. India travelled to England to play five Test encounters in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Captained by Shubman Gill, India led a great fightback in the fourth Test against England, where they drew the match, which enabled them to stay alive and kicking in the series. Yes, they were still 1-2 down, but their morale was up, and it was time to square the series at The Oval. The match was nothing short of a thriller movie. The hosts, England, were given a target of 374 by India to snatch the coveted trophy. Down by three wickets at 106, India were well and truly in the game before Harry Brook and Joe Root unleashed their onslaught against the Indian bowling attack. Brook smacked a ridiculous 91-ball hundred while Root brought up his 39th ton. Together they stitched a 195-run stand, and it seemed all over for India. Even though England lost both their key players before the end of the day's play, the hosts were only 35 runs away from glory. Weather, though, had a mind of its own, and the match got pushed to the fifth and final day. Day 5. England are 339 for 6. 374 target. Prasidh Krishna's first two deliveries yielded two consecutive boundaries. The target was 27 in no time. Siraj, the workhorse, returns to the attack and sends Jamie Smith back. Jamie Overton gets trapped in front of the wickets and becomes Siraj's next victim. England still needed 20 runs to win. Their scorecard, 354 for 8. Krishna joined the party soon by masterfully cleaning up Josh Tongue. India need 1 wicket to draw the series. England are 17 runs behind. Gus Atkinson's spirited batting display brought down the required score to 7. He had also successfully safeguarded an injured Chris Woakes on the non-striker's end. Siraj, who had a dream series with the ball and led the attack from the front in the absence of the team's main man, Jasprit Bumrah, delivered a gorgeous yorker. Atkinson, looking to yank it away, was clean bowled. India won by the barest of margins. 6 to be exact. Lord's, 2021 Virat Kohli may have hung up his boots from the format he cherished the most, but fan edits of the Lord's triumph keep Kohli's spirit alive whenever red-ball cricket is spoken about. 'We get them out or not, but we need to make these 60 overs feel like hell for England batters. If I see anyone laughing in front of their players, see what happens. Got it? Sixty overs should feel like hell out there," captain Virat Kohli said in the pre-innings huddle. India ended Day 4 with 181 for 6 on the scoreboard against England. The following day, Rishabh Pant departed early, and his partner Ishant Sharma followed suit soon. When it seemed like the hosts would be chasing a target no less than 200, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah decided to frustrate Joe Root's men. The duo put up a spectacular partnership of 89 for the ninth wicket. The scenes on the iconic Lord's balcony showed India having a baller time. Captain Kohli decided to declare and gave England 272 to chase. England had a horrid start to their run chase, losing both their openers for ducks inside the first two overs. Only three English batters managed to reach double-digit scores in the fourth innings. Less than 10 overs to go, England found themselves tattering at 120 for 7. That scorecard soon turned 120 for 8. Then 120 for 9. And finally, 120 all out. India produced a famous 151-run victory at the iconic venue. Siraj and Bumrah starred with the ball. Gabba, 2021 In a series where India suffered a 36-run all-out debacle in the series opener at Adelaide, the visiting side played under Ajinkya Rahane's captaincy after Kohli returned home for the birth of his child. Despite the ghosts of Adelaide, India, now under Rahane, registered a famous win at Melbourne in the second Test. Settled for a draw in their third clash against Australia in Sydney, the series was nicely poised at 1-1. Also Read: Why Stuart Broad's Combined England-India Team XI Has Left Cricket Fans Puzzled Then, Gabba happened. Tasked to chase 328, opening batter Shubman Gill played a gritty 91 to keep India in the hunt. Cheteshwar Pujara took body blows one after another like a champ. He faced 211 deliveries for his 56. Rishabh Pant played like Rishabh Pant. The man was on a mission, and he scored an unbeaten 89 to take India home to a stunning 2-1 series win with only 18 deliveries left in the Test match. This win at this venue was even more special as India broke the Gabba's fortress – Australia's 32-year unbeaten streak at the ground. How Do Cricket Fans Rank These? A discussion took place on Reddit soon after India's conquest at The Oval and the verdict was out soon. 'It's gonna be near impossible for us to beat the Gabba. We might dominate test cricket again, but that series will always be at the top unless some very unexpected things happen (sic)," wrote one fan. 'Gabba is easily at the top. 1st we got wrecked for 36 and then Kohli left. Right before the test Covid outbreak meant we had a first 11 of newbies playing. Sundar, thakur, gill, natarajan and Saini. Siraj had to lead the bowling line-up for the first time, (sic)" wrote another before adding, 'That first innings defiant stand between Thakur and Sundar that allowed us to have that fantastic finish. Pant's innings to take us home. Gill with a crucial 91 when Rohith fell early (sic)." top videos View all The commenter emphasised the role of Siraj at The Oval and put the win over the triumph of Lord's. A third disagreed and wrote: 'Gabba > Lord's > Oval" About the Author Anurag Verma Anurag Verma, News Editor at works independently for the Viral section. ECB Not Interested In Two-Tier WTC Due To Fear Of Relegation: Report
Last Updated: The ECB is reportedly opposed to a two-tier WTC where England might not be in the same division as Australia or India if there were relegated. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is not interested in a two-tier World Test Championship (WTC). According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo on Wednesday, the 'ECB is not keen on a two-tiered World Test Championship (WTC) in which relegation could lead to England not being in the same division as Australia or India, thus potentially depriving them of their two most lucrative rivalries." The International Cricket Council (ICC) in July 2025 formed a working group to improve the WTC ahead of the next cycle, which begins in July 2027. It has been reported that the two-tier WTC system was among the most significant topics discussed at the ICC annual conference in July. While speaking to BBC's Test Match Special on Day 1 of the fifth India-England Test at The Oval last week, ECB chairman Richard Thompson said the two-tier model for Test cricket was being discussed by the ICC, but he was not sure if it was perfect. 'There are a lot of options that we've got to look at – tiers would be one of them," he said. 'We wouldn't want, as England, we may go through a fallow period, and that means, what, we fall into Division Two, and we don't play Australia and India? That couldn't happen. There has to be a sense that common sense needs to play out here." According to him, a better solution could be tinkering with the existing WTC itself. He gave South Africa's win over Australia in the final of WTC 2025 at Lord's as an example, where, with the right support, smaller countries could emerge as strong contenders. 'The World Test Championship could work better than it does. It has definitely improved the narrative, [and] it has created a relevance," Thompson said. 'Seeing what it meant for South Africa to win – who are crushed by rugby in their own country – and seeing players I know really well, like Graeme Smith, in tears on the outfield, that was a real moment seeing them win. As much as I was critical that they turned up with a 'B' team when they played New Zealand [in 2024], it was still good for the game when the underdog wins." 'But the reality of it is, the World Test Championship, if it was improved upon and certain changes were made, maybe you don't need two tiers of Test cricket. What you do need is a schedule that makes a lot more sense than it currently does, and that must include the volume of bilateral cricket that you play, white-ball and red-ball, and recognising that from 2028, we have an Olympics." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
