[UPDATED] Bukit Aman tells organisers to cancel Kepala Batas gathering linked to upside-down flag
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the police take seriously any issue that could compromise public safety and well-being.
"We are aware of a planned gathering in Bertam, Kepala Batas today, and have advised all parties involved to cancel it.
"This is to safeguard the local community and to avoid any unhealthy confrontations between opposing groups," he said in a statement today.
Khalid said police investigations are ongoing into the incident involving the upside-down display of the Jalur Gemilang, which recently went viral on social media.
"To date, 38 police reports have been lodged nationwide, 17 in Penang and 21 in other states.
"The investigation includes action against individuals who recorded and disseminated the footage, under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," he said, adding that the investigation paper was submitted to the Penang Public Prosecutor's Office on Aug 11 and is currently under review.
He said the police remain committed to conducting the investigation transparently, with integrity, and in accordance with the law, to ensure peace and harmony in society.
"The public is advised not to speculate in ways that could affect the investigation process. Instead, accurate information should be channelled directly to the police," he said.
It was previously reported that police launched an investigation after a video showing a man hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down went viral on Aug 9.
The video, posted on Facebook, shows the man raising the national flag incorrectly while another individual recorded the incident.
The complainant, who came across the video, suspected it took place in Kepala Batas and subsequently lodged a report at the Kepala Batas police station.

Reports over post linking Arifin
Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: Mohd Shamsul described the irresponsible remarks as malicious public incitement, threatening the safety and dignity of both the victim's family and the accused party. MEMBAKUT: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Membakut lodged a police report on Tuesday over a Facebook post linking the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir to the daughter of State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Arifin Mohd Arif. Its Secretary Mohd Shamsul Husry Abdul Wahid said the post was filled with false accusations, slander and attempts to tarnish the reputation of the Education Exco. He said the allegations were untrue, provocative and could create negative public perception while disrupting investigations into Zara's death. 'As Dr Arifin stated on Aug 9, Farisya Maisara is not his daughter and none of his children are, or have ever been, students at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar,' he said. He described the irresponsible remarks as malicious public incitement, threatening the safety and dignity of both the victim's family and the accused party. He urged the authorities to act swiftly against the Facebook account owner, adding that their lawyers are reviewing legal options to file a lawsuit. He also advised the public to stop spreading defamatory claims about the case. Shamsul said the division wants immediate investigation into several Facebook account holders for posting the false and defamatory statements. The report also called on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate and act against those spreading the content. In Beaufort, several Gagasan Rakyat Membakut committee members also lodged police reports, led by its information chief Awang Daud Ag Anak, who denied that Dr Arifin's daughter was involved in the bullying case. 'We want the police to investigate and take action against those spreading slander on social media against the Membakut Assemblyman,' he said. A total of seven branches of the division lodged reports on the matter. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Should 'hard up for Type C dollar' be blamed for spate of Chinese mainlanders' crimes in Malaysia?
CHINA nationals have earned the wrath of a rightist Malay group following an alarming rate of indecency to their host country. This follows five crime incidents over the past one month alone which showcased their disrespect to the Malaysian law, its people and local culture. 'In just three weeks, these cases involving Chinese nationals occurred at university campus, defence centre, city street, night market and airports. They were scattered in terms of location but close in terms of time,' penned opposition-slant Gerakan Pengundi Sedar in a recent Facebook post. 'This phenomenon occurs as Malaysia is increasingly becoming a destination of choice for Chinese citizens – not only as tourists – but also as students, investors and participants in the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme.' The self-proclaimed laymen political advocate went on to cite the following incidents which coincidentally have also received media coverage: On Aug 14, a 31-year-old China national woman cursed at an immigration officer, pulled her tudung This came about after the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) found that the woman, another adult and two children did not have any record of entering Malaysia. The suspect was arrested immediately and remanded for four days. On Aug 13, a 24-year-old Chinese national woman was arrested after running amok and attacking six members of the public with a knife near Metro Point in Kajang after having rammed her vehicle into three motorcycles while yelling 'I hate Malaysia' On the same day, anti-Chinese Communist Party volunteers at the Taman Connaught night market in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (KL) claimed they were threatened by men dressed in black while distributing leaflets. On Aug 6, two Chinese nationals were arrested while flying a drone at the football field near the Wisma Pertahanan in Wangsa Maju, KL which is a restricted zone. Both men were charged at the KL Sessions Court om Aug 13 under Sections 3(a) and 4 of the Official Secrets Act (OSA) for spying and documenting within restricted areas. On July 22, Chinese national You Wei, 22, was charged t the Sessions Court in Shah Alam for stabbing compatriot Wu Jalin, 20 'Policies such as long-term visas, foreign property ownership and investment in strategic sectors have opened up economic opportunities but at the same time raise questions,' stressed Gerakan Pengundi Sedar. 'Are our screening and monitoring mechanisms strict enough to protect public safety? Are the facilities provided to attract investment and second home ownership also attracting individuals who may pose social risks?' – Aug 17, 2025 Editor's Note: The number of students from China applying to study in Malaysian universities grew by 25% in 2024, driven by a shift in global student mobility. Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) said international students, including from China, are shifting away from the world's 'Big Four' study destinations: the UK, US, Australia and Canada. 'More students are exploring dynamic and diverse destinations across Asia. Malaysia is one of the top destinations,' it told The Star. Jalur Gemilang: Don't take the law into your own hands
KUALA LUMPUR: The public has been urged not to take the law into their own hands or engage in unlawful acts against anyone committing offences related to the Jalur Gemilang flag, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said that all matters involving investigations, prosecutions, and court decisions must be left entirely to the authorities, following a reminder issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) yesterday. "Do not act as the police, lawyers, or judge. It is wrong. Leave it to the police to investigate, the A-GC to prosecute, and the courts to decide," he said after launching the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign at Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Kampus Bahasa Melayu today. The launch was also attended by Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (strategic communications and creative industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin; Information Department director-general Julina Johan; and IPG Kampus Bahasa Melayu director Dr Masitah Mohammad Yusof. Fahmi said that some people had been called in by the police following a rally held to "teach" certain parties a lesson, but further action would be handled solely by the authorities. He said Malaysians should address issues related to the Jalur Gemilang respectfully and constructively. "As Malaysians, we can also play our part. If we see a Jalur Gemilang that has fallen, we should raise it. If it is faded, replace it with a new one. If it is improperly flown, correct it ourselves. Let us not sneer, curse, or act uncivilly. We must demonstrate our patriotic spirit during the national month while reminding one another of proper conduct," he added. Fahmi said that the programme included the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya-level Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy, comprising 73 vehicles from the Communications Ministry's departments and agencies, the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), National Security Council (MKN), Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Suzuki V-Strom Malaysia motorsports club, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), and the Lembah Pantai Madani Community. Additional side events included the Safe Internet campaign, aimed at raising awareness of ethical online practices among teacher training institute students. Jalur Gemilang kits were also distributed to IPG senior management and representatives of 12 Madani communities in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya as part of the "1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang" initiative. - Bernama
