In Cyprus on June 15, President Nikos Christodoulides presented PM Modi with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, lauding his efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and global cooperation. In Ghana on July 2, President John Dramani Mahama conferred the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over three decades. Days later, on July 4, Trinidad & Tobago's President Christine Carla Kangaloo awarded The Order of the Republic, a historic first for a foreign leader, recognizing Modi's humanitarian leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Delhi HC issues notice in petition challenging UPSC decision barring women from military academies through CDS exam
New Delhi A bench of chief justice DK Upadhyay and justice Tushar Rao Gedela directed the Centre and UPSC to file their response in a petition. (Representative photo) The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice in a petition challenging the Union Public Services Commission's (UPSC) decision barring women from applying to military academies through the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination. A bench of chief justice DK Upadhyay and justice Tushar Rao Gedela directed the Centre and UPSC to file their response in a petition filed by Kush Kalra, and fixed the next hearing for November 12. In his petition, Kalra asserted that UPSC's May 28 advertisement for the CDS-II Examination 2025, restricting women from applying to three of the four service branches—the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun; Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala; and Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad—was arbitrary and violative of the fundamental right to equality and profession. The notification only permits women to apply to the Officers Training Academy, Chennai, in the Short Service Commission (SSC) course. Kalra, in his plea, contended through advocate Jyotika Kalra, sought to highlight the inconsistency between the exclusion and the government's own statement in the same notification, which claimed it 'strives to have a workforce which reflects gender balance and women candidates are encouraged to apply.' Such a contradiction, Kalra argued, exposes a systemic and discriminatory barrier that undermines the rights of aspiring women candidates and runs counter to constitutional principles and the Supreme Court's 2020 ruling on permanent commission. In February 2020, the Supreme Court, while allowing permanent commission to women officers in the Army, ruled that restricting the appointment of women to command positions was unconstitutional. To be sure, the Centre in September 2021, after the Supreme Court's nudge, informed the court about its decision to induct women into the National Defence Academy (NDA). However, the top court in January 2022 demanded an explanation from the Union government on restricting the intake of women cadets in the upcoming session of the NDA to 19– the same as last year. Citing the example of Col Sofyia Qureshi, one of the two women officers who briefed the media after India's execution of Operation Sindoor, Kalra in his petition asserted that denying entry to women through CDS would deprive the country of such officers. 'This exclusion of women candidates from the opportunity to get employed through CDS, becomes a hurdle in the career advancement opportunities for women officers in the armed forces. The categorical exclusion of women candidates from applying for the CDS examination and getting selected for IMA, AFA and INA solely on the grounds of sex, without any reasonable or justifiable explanations is a violation of the fundamental right to equality,' the petition read. Kalra said that even though the high court in April directed the Centre to take a call on the entry of women in CDS within eight weeks, no decision has been taken until now.

'I regularly visit Delhi during the Parliament session and, this time, our MPs also met the Union home minister. We discussed issues related to their constituencies, especially matters that require coordination with the central government," Shinde told reporters. 'In the NDA meeting held yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Home Minister Amit Shah, mentioning that he is the longest-serving home minister of the country. The Prime Minister also expressed that Shah still has more work to do in the future, and the alliance partners honoured him for his efforts and contribution." The visit is part of routine coordination between central and state leadership, especially with the upcoming civic elections. The BMC polls, significant for all major political parties, are expected to be announced soon. During the visit, Shinde was accompanied by key members of the Shiv Sena and was expected to meet several other senior leaders in Delhi. He stressed that these visits are part of his regular duties as deputy, especially when Parliament is in session. While Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi were not present as they had gone to attend JMM leader Shibu Soren's funeral on Tuesday night, they deputed senior party leaders and MPs to show solidarity with what Revanth described as a 'historic moment' for BCs. Revanth declared, "If PM Modi wants to remain in office, he must ensure the approval of the two BC reservation bills. Telangana's BC community is prepared to sacrifice everything for this cause. We're only demanding the right to implement 42% reservations in Telangana—for our people, in our state. Who gave you the authority to crush this mandate?" He dubbed Modi the "biggest enemy of the BCs" and didn't spare state BJP leaders either, calling out Union ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay, and Telangana BJP chief N Ramchander Rao for their 'silence'. "We've moved an ordinance to scrap that cap. It's now pending with the President," he said. Taking a swipe at the BJP's 2029 ambitions, Revanth responded to party MP Nishikant Dubey's comments that Modi will again be the PM face. "Let Modi contest 2029. Rahul Gandhi-led INDIA bloc will defeat him decisively, and the BJP won't cross 100 seats," he claimed. He invoked Rahul Gandhi's slogan 'Jitni hissedari, utni bhagedari' (proportional representation for social justice), warning political consequences for those who ignore it. "No matter how powerful, if anyone opposes Rahul Gandhi's vision, Telangana will mark the death of their political career," the CM said. Revanth alleged that the BJP's continued delay is a deliberate attempt to suppress the aspirations of BCs. "The BC quota bills are pending with the President for the last four months. If we don't get an appointment with her tomorrow (Thursday), it will confirm BJP's 'anti-BC' bias," he said. Calling himself as a 'crusader for social justice,' Revanth added, "Over 300 chief ministers have led different states in India, but I am proud to be the one who conducted a caste survey and passed 42% BC reservations. I thank my cabinet colleagues and Rahul Gandhi for their unwavering support."
