Perlis MB's defeat in party polls exposes rift within Pas, says Mahfuz
Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said the outcome of the Arau and Padang Besar Pas elections signalled more than just the rejection of one leader, but it was also a damning verdict from the party's rank-and-file.
"This is not just about the defeat of an individual or his team. It is also a clear sign that the party's grassroots no longer have confidence in the leadership of Pas and the Perlis state government under Shukri," he said in a statement today.
Mahfuz, who was once a Pas vice-president, added that the internal rift has grown too glaring to ignore and warned that the prolonged power struggle was robbing Perlis people of a stable and decisive administration.
"The people of Perlis are watching this crisis unfold. The top Pas leadership remains silent and has failed to take any constructive action, even though criticisms of the Menteri Besar's weaknesses have been raised repeatedly, including at Pas' own Muktamar," he said.
Mahfuz took a swipe at Pas Youth for its selective activism, questioning why there were no calls for a "Turun Shukri" rally when the same group was eager to stage protests demanding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's resignation.
"The question now is on how long will Pas leaders ignore the voice and concerns of their own grassroots? How long must the people of Perlis suffer in this drawn-out internal feud?
He cautioned that the state government's credibility was crumbling amid inconsistent decision-making and a glaring lack of direction, leaving the people in limbo.
"Political stability is the bedrock of the people's well-being. When the ruling party fails to manage its own conflicts, the people pay the price," he said.
Mahfuz urged Pas to stop politicking among themselves and start listening to the rakyat and party members.
"If they can no longer lead with integrity and fairness, they should step aside and return the mandate to the people. The people of Perlis deserve leadership that is stable, caring and accountable," he said.
In an unexpected outcome during the party's election, Shukri, was unsuccessful in his attempt to unseat the incumbent Arau Pas chief Solahudin Azmi.
Shukri only collected 43 votes, trailing far behind Solahudin who managed 128 votes.

Commenting on public concern over the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir, Afnan said parents are increasingly worried about sending their children to school, and are losing trust in the educational institutions. 'The education minister has given assurances that our schools are safe, but the public does not want verbal assurances alone (as) the situation has become severe, with many bullying cases occurring in our schools,' he said. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital the following day. A post-mortem has been completed after her body was exhumed. Several demonstrations were held across Sabah to demand justice for Zara.

RM700 monthly salary for teachers at PAS preschools violates minimum wage rule, says Nik Nazmi
KUALA LUMPUR: A government backbencher has criticised the RM600 to RM700 monthly salaries reportedly paid to around 9,500 teachers at PAS-operated preschools, saying the wages are in clear violation of the national minimum wage law. Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (PH-Setiawangsa) said the justification that Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (Pasti) teachers were volunteers was unacceptable as it is not in line with regulations under the National Wages Consultative Council (Amendment) Act 2025. "Among the attractions, besides promoting Islamic education, are the low fees. "However, there have been many complaints about Pasti not adhering to aspects such as the syllabus and teacher's remuneration," he said during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 11). The Human Resources Ministry had announced that the Minimum Wage Order 2024 took effect on Aug 1, 2025, setting a minimum wage of RM1,700 per month for employers with fewer than five employees not engaged in professional activities classified under the Malaysian Standard Classification of Occupations 2020. Nik Nazmi also urged the government to consolidate existing government-run preschool services – currently managed separately by the Education Ministry, Community Development Department (Kemas) and the National Unity Department – into a more streamlined national programme. He added that the practice also denied the teachers contributions to the Employees Provident Fund and Social Security Organisation. In response, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) said that although the teachers' salaries are low, other allowances were provided despite them working only four hours a day. Nik Nazmi also welcomed the government's plan to make pre-school compulsory at the age of five and to focus on providing facilities in rural areas.
