Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary leaks are fake but what is Nintendo planning?
Nintendo has a track record of unexpected celebrations for its core characters (hello, Year Of Luigi), but the inexplicably loud fanfare around the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. is one of the more peculiar in recent memory.
For the title's 35th birthday, which is hardly a major milestone, Nintendo released Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. 35, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, special Lego sets, a limited edition Game & Watch handheld, and a whole line of 35th anniversary apparel.
This was likely because it was in the middle of the Covid pandemic, and Nintendo literally had nothing else to promote, but it makes it very hard to predict what Nintendo will do about the more significant 40th anniversary on September 13.
Earlier this week, several posts on Reddit appeared to out one part of Nintendo's plans. One post showed alleged images of a New Super Mario Bros. Collection, containing 2006's New Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and 2012's New Super Mario Bros. 2.
This same rumour was seemingly corroborated by an alleged leaker named John Skinny on Reddit (via MyNintendoNews), who claimed they had received information on the same collection via internal scheduling docs and localisation assets via a contractor Q&A team.
However, while believable on the surface, the rumour starts to fall apart once you dig into the details. Many have pointed out how the barcode on the 'leaked' box art is the same as 2012's Super Mario Bros. U. Likewise, Skinny claimed they played a 'new Zelda game' during a Switch 2 demo event last year – something we've never heard about since.

This appears to rule out this rumour, but it still leaves the question of what (if anything) Nintendo is planning for the 40th anniversary. There's been rumbles of a potential secret Christmas game for the Switch 2 but while that's very unlikely to be a new big budget title, a remaster compilation is much more plausible. More Trending
There are some other, smaller announcements which also seem likely. We already know Super Mario Sunshine is coming to Nintendo Switch Online at some point, so the timing of that could line up with the 40th celebrations in September.
The limited time multiplayer battle royale title, Super Mario Bros. 35, could be rebranded for the 40th anniversary and re-released on Nintendo Switch Online. There might even be some kind of update for Mario Kart World, angled around retro cosmetics.
Nintendo hasn't announced any plans for the 40th anniversary but, after its huge celebration for the 35th, it would be weird if it does go by without any fanfare. Although, of course, weird is Nintendo's stock in trade…

‘The poor, poor child' people say as mum reveals the X-rated name given to her daughter without knowing what it means
PLENTY of parents opt for more unique names for their little ones, but one young mum has come under fire for the X-rated moniker she gave her daughter. It turns out the young mum had no idea what the word really meant when she set her heart on it, and people have been. left stunned. 2 2 This comes after a Reddit user revealed that her cousin, 20, created her own name by fusing two different names together - except she had no idea the word already means something else. Taking to the online forum, the concerned family member explained that the name came from her grandparent's names, Harvey and Charlotte. Despite the sweet sentiment, the name left the family in chaos/ In the viral post, the Reddit user said: "She named her something so horrific I cannot even call the baby it. "She combined two names and came up with... 'Harlotte'." It turns out no one had any idea what the name would be until it was too late and all the legal documents had already been signed, so no one had a chance to talk the mum out of it. "My mom burst out, "YOU NAMED THE BABY W****???" and my cousin started screaming. We are a loud family, but holy hell,' the Reddit user added. Although spelt differently, the unusual name sounds exactly like the word 'harlot' which, unfortunately for the little one, means 'prostitute'. The Reddit user said she refused to use the name, so used a nickname when she was born, but doesn't know how long it will last. After revealing the name people couldn't believe she didn't know what it really meant. Marnie Simpson reveals first video of newborn baby daughter and very unusual name "I would immediately and INSISTENTLY start calling that child Lottie and never look back," one person commented on the viral post. A second wrote: "If she doesn't immediately change it to Charlotte, she's a bad person for not making things right for her child's future." "It's a shame - I feel this was a lovely gesture that backfired due to ignorance," someone else noted. And another said: "Oh no! Honestly, it's a cute idea and I see where she was going. I assume a lot of 20 year olds may not be familiar with old timey misogynistic insults. "It's so easy to change her name right now though." Meanwhile, others pointed out some other combinations of the name the mum could've picked instead, including Charley, Charvey, Harley, or Harvette. Are Unique Baby Names Worth The Hassle? YOU may think having a unique name helps you to stand out, but is it all it's cracked up to be? Fabulous' Deputy Editor Josie Griffiths reveals the turmoil she faced with her own name while growing up. When I was a child, all I wanted was one of those personalised keyrings with my name on it. But no joy, the closest I could find was Rosie, Joseph (not great for a little girl) and Joanne. Josie is short for Josephine, which is a French name, and I managed to reach my 20s without ever meeting anyone who shared it. When I try to introduce myself to people, I get all sorts of random things - like Tracey and Stacey - which can be pretty annoying. Although I have come into contact with a couple of Josies over the last year - there seems to be a few of us around my age - it's still a much rarer name than most of my friends have. On the whole I don't mind it, at least it's not rude or crazily spelt. And it means I can get away with 'doing a Cheryl' and just referring to myself as Josie. I'm getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I'm changing my surname, as it's not seen as very cool or feminist to do so these days, but I explain to them that I'm not that attached to Griffiths as I'd always just say 'hi it's Josie' when ringing a mate up. I think it's nice to be unique and I'll definitely try and replicate this when naming my own kids. It's the rude names you've got to watch out for, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist I'll definitely be avoiding those.

My oddly competitive mother wants to wear white to my wedding and is claiming it's her last chance to feel beautiful
A bride-to-be has revealed her 'oddly competitive' mother plans to wear a white, floor-length gown to her wedding, claiming it's her 'last chance' to feel beautiful. Taking to Reddit, the anonymous bride, 23, believed to be from the US, revealed she's had a 'rocky relationship' with her mother for years- but things took a bizarrely competitive turn once she got engaged. She explained: 'Since I got engaged, she's been oddly competitive, commenting on my body, comparing our rings, like we are in a competition, saying things like 'this day is as much about me as it is about you.' However things reached breaking point when her mother unveiled her gown for the big day-a white dress that looked 'exactly like a wedding gown.' The bride explained: 'I honestly thought she was joking until she showed me the dress she bought, a white, floor length gown that looks exactly like a bridal dress. And I I told her, flat out, she cannot wear that.' She was stunned when her mother 'burst into tears' and didn't understand why she could not wear the white gown on her big day. She added: 'She got quiet, then burst into tears, saying 'this was an opportunity to feel beautiful before getting old' and that I'm selfish for not letting her have this one thing.' Trying to keep the peace, the bride says she offered to take her mother shopping for a more elegant alternative, only to be accused of being 'controlling and ungrateful.' Now, her mother is threatening 'not to attend the wedding at all', and extended family members are piling on pressure for the bride to cave. One aunt even insisted that she should 'just let her have this' to avoid drama on the big day. Fortunately, the bride says her fiancé and maid of honour are backing her up, but she's been left questioning whether she's in the wrong for standing her ground. She concluded: 'I don't think I'm wrong for drawing a line here, but now part of me wonders if AITA?' Many rushed to the comments, and called the bride's mother 'extremely manipulative', with some saying she should uninvite her to the wedding. One person said: 'Your mother is extremely manipulative. Take her up on that offer. NTA' Another wrote: 'This the best response. OP, stop engaging with her tantrums. "Mom, you cannot wear white, you will not be allowed in if you show up in a white dress + people will secretly mock you for it. We'll miss you if you can't make it." 'Then disengage from the convo, go low info with her on the rest of your wedding plans.' Someone else said: 'I was going to say, wearing white to her daughter's wedding is not her opportunity to feel beautiful. It's her opportunity to become a laughingstock in an incident that will be gossiped about for decades.' A fourth added: 'You felt like she was competing with you. That is because she is in a toxic competition with you. Reset your boundaries. "Mom,you can either wear something mother of the bride, appropriate, or stay home. Please take a good look at your behavior. If you want a celebration of you have one at a later date." (An anniversary, perhaps.)' Meanwhile, others said if they saw someone wearing white to a wedding they 'accidentally' spill red wine on them. One person said: 'Might as well not let her ruin your wedding before cutting her off. Let her know if she wears a white dress there's usually multiple women that will spill their red wine on her and that you'll also have the photographer photoshop it into a dishwater grey.' Another said: 'As a red wine drinker, I was on patrol at my best friend's wedding. Ready to make a mess if need be but everyone was cool so it worked out. 'I will gladly do this for op* if she wants; I'm a very clumsy person.'

Freaky Friday fans are just learning Jamie Lee Curtis almost wasn't in original film
As fans are preparing to watch the new Freaky Friday sequel, some were shocked to learn that Jamie Lee Curtis barely made the cut to star in the now iconic movie with Lindsey Lohan It's been more than two decades since the body-swap comedy that captured the sometimes complicated bond between mothers and daughters became an instant hit. But Freaky Friday fans are just learning that the movie could have ended up very different as Jamie Lee Curtis wasn't actually the first pick to play the mother. The movie stars Jamie Lee Curtis, as mum Tess Coleman, who suddenly switches bodies with her teenage daughter Anna, who is played by Lindsey Lohan. It was released in 2003, and was a big commercial success, grossing over $160 million (£119 million) worldwide against a production budget of $26 million. (£19 million) Now, over 20 years later, fans are excited to return to the cinema to watch the highly anticipated sequel, Freakier Friday, which sees both Curtis and Lohan return to their roles. While the two actresses impresse with their chemistry in the movie, fans were shocked to learn that Curtis almost didn't make the cut for the movie, as she jumped in just four days before filming started when the original actress for the role suddenly dropped out. In a movie subreddit group on Reddit, one user asked about what movies still ended up being a success despite having a 'troubled development'. In a comment to the post, one fan shared: "Annette Bening was cast to play the lead but dropped out the week before filming began, Tom Selleck also dropped out when he learned she was no longer a part of it." "Jamie Lee Curtis was told about the role's existence and script only four days before she started shooting," they added. To this, another person commented: "Props to Jamie Lee Curtis though. Woman read the script, had her hair dyed red, was ready in just 4 days. She's said in interviews that was one of if not her favorite productions ever." Speaking with 9honey Celebrity about the matter, Curtis revealed that it was only a few days before filming began that she was contacted to be a part of the film. "Another actress was doing the movie and she pulled out, I think, for personal reasons. I really never found out [why], and I had, like, four days before we started to work," she revealed. However, despite the quick turnaround, she said she wasn't fazed at all about taking on the roll. "I had no hesitation to do that. The only hesitation was I had a 15-year-old and a five-year-old at home," she said. "So just the idea of jumping into a movie where all of a sudden I was going to go to work for three months on something, and just the management of my family life, was the only issue for me," the actress added.
