Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary leaks are fake but what is Nintendo planning?
Nintendo has a track record of unexpected celebrations for its core characters (hello, Year Of Luigi), but the inexplicably loud fanfare around the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. is one of the more peculiar in recent memory.
For the title's 35th birthday, which is hardly a major milestone, Nintendo released Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. 35, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, special Lego sets, a limited edition Game & Watch handheld, and a whole line of 35th anniversary apparel.
This was likely because it was in the middle of the Covid pandemic, and Nintendo literally had nothing else to promote, but it makes it very hard to predict what Nintendo will do about the more significant 40th anniversary on September 13.
Earlier this week, several posts on Reddit appeared to out one part of Nintendo's plans. One post showed alleged images of a New Super Mario Bros. Collection, containing 2006's New Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and 2012's New Super Mario Bros. 2.
This same rumour was seemingly corroborated by an alleged leaker named John Skinny on Reddit (via MyNintendoNews), who claimed they had received information on the same collection via internal scheduling docs and localisation assets via a contractor Q&A team.
However, while believable on the surface, the rumour starts to fall apart once you dig into the details. Many have pointed out how the barcode on the 'leaked' box art is the same as 2012's Super Mario Bros. U. Likewise, Skinny claimed they played a 'new Zelda game' during a Switch 2 demo event last year – something we've never heard about since.

This appears to rule out this rumour, but it still leaves the question of what (if anything) Nintendo is planning for the 40th anniversary. There's been rumbles of a potential secret Christmas game for the Switch 2 but while that's very unlikely to be a new big budget title, a remaster compilation is much more plausible. More Trending
There are some other, smaller announcements which also seem likely. We already know Super Mario Sunshine is coming to Nintendo Switch Online at some point, so the timing of that could line up with the 40th celebrations in September.
The limited time multiplayer battle royale title, Super Mario Bros. 35, could be rebranded for the 40th anniversary and re-released on Nintendo Switch Online. There might even be some kind of update for Mario Kart World, angled around retro cosmetics.
Nintendo hasn't announced any plans for the 40th anniversary but, after its huge celebration for the 35th, it would be weird if it does go by without any fanfare. Although, of course, weird is Nintendo's stock in trade…

A bride-to-be has revealed her 'oddly competitive' mother plans to wear a white, floor-length gown to her wedding, claiming it's her 'last chance' to feel beautiful. Taking to Reddit, the anonymous bride, 23, believed to be from the US, revealed she's had a 'rocky relationship' with her mother for years- but things took a bizarrely competitive turn once she got engaged. She explained: 'Since I got engaged, she's been oddly competitive, commenting on my body, comparing our rings, like we are in a competition, saying things like 'this day is as much about me as it is about you.' However things reached breaking point when her mother unveiled her gown for the big day-a white dress that looked 'exactly like a wedding gown.' The bride explained: 'I honestly thought she was joking until she showed me the dress she bought, a white, floor length gown that looks exactly like a bridal dress. And I I told her, flat out, she cannot wear that.' She was stunned when her mother 'burst into tears' and didn't understand why she could not wear the white gown on her big day. As fans are preparing to watch the new Freaky Friday sequel, some were shocked to learn that Jamie Lee Curtis barely made the cut to star in the now iconic movie with Lindsey Lohan It's been more than two decades since the body-swap comedy that captured the sometimes complicated bond between mothers and daughters became an instant hit. But Freaky Friday fans are just learning that the movie could have ended up very different as Jamie Lee Curtis wasn't actually the first pick to play the mother. The movie stars Jamie Lee Curtis, as mum Tess Coleman, who suddenly switches bodies with her teenage daughter Anna, who is played by Lindsey Lohan. It was released in 2003, and was a big commercial success, grossing over $160 million (£119 million) worldwide against a production budget of $26 million. (£19 million) Now, over 20 years later, fans are excited to return to the cinema to watch the highly anticipated sequel, Freakier Friday, which sees both Curtis and Lohan return to their roles. While the two actresses impresse with their chemistry in the movie, fans were shocked to learn that Curtis almost didn't make the cut for the movie, as she jumped in just four days before filming started when the original actress for the role suddenly dropped out. In a movie subreddit group on Reddit, one user asked about what movies still ended up being a success despite having a 'troubled development'. In a comment to the post, one fan shared: "Annette Bening was cast to play the lead but dropped out the week before filming began, Tom Selleck also dropped out when he learned she was no longer a part of it." "Jamie Lee Curtis was told about the role's existence and script only four days before she started shooting," they added. To this, another person commented: "Props to Jamie Lee Curtis though. Woman read the script, had her hair dyed red, was ready in just 4 days. She's said in interviews that was one of if not her favorite productions ever." Speaking with 9honey Celebrity about the matter, Curtis revealed that it was only a few days before filming began that she was contacted to be a part of the film. "Another actress was doing the movie and she pulled out, I think, for personal reasons. I really never found out [why], and I had, like, four days before we started to work," she revealed. However, despite the quick turnaround, she said she wasn't fazed at all about taking on the roll. "I had no hesitation to do that. The only hesitation was I had a 15-year-old and a five-year-old at home," she said. "So just the idea of jumping into a movie where all of a sudden I was going to go to work for three months on something, and just the management of my family life, was the only issue for me," the actress added.
