US supports PH military modernization efforts
The United States has reiterated its support for the efforts of the Philippine government to modernize its military.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also pushed for the forging of 'a strong shield of real deterrence' between the two countries.
'We do not seek confrontation, but we are and will be ready and resolute. We're proud to support our mutual economic vitality, including your efforts to modernize your armed forces and collective defense,' Hegseth said in a meeting with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the Pentagon on Monday.
Marcos is on official visit to Washington D.C. and is also scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
In his opening remark, Hegseth talked about further deepening the ties between the two nations.
"Together, we must forge a strong shield of real deterrence for peace ensuring the long-term security and prosperity for our nations,' he said.
Marcos was accompanied by Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, National Security Adviser Eduardo Año and Frederick Go, Presidential Adviser on Investment and Economic Affairs.
'And the United States is committed to achieving peace through strength and willing to work with all nations who share this desire in the region,' Hegseth added.
The US Defense Secretary also reaffirmed his commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty between the US and the Philippines.
'And together we remained committed to the Mutual Defense Agreement. And this pact extends to armed attacks on our armed forces, aircraft, or public vessels including our Coast Guards anywhere in the Pacific including the South China Sea,' Hegseth said.
For his part, Marcos thanked the US government for its support.
The Philippine President also mentioned that the partnership between the two countries has helped bring stability in the South China Sea.
'Again, I believe that our alliance, the United States and the Philippines, had formed a great part in terms of preserving the peace, in terms of preserving the stability of the South China Sea. But I would even go as far as to say in the entire Indo-Pacific region,' Marcos said. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

DPWH-11 denies post linking delay of project in Davao City to politics
A social media post showing a large sign allegedly posted at the Maa Flyover project site in Davao City went viral after it claimed that the project was delayed due to political interference. The sign accused the Marcos and Romualdez administration of political pressure, which allegedly caused the delay of the project. It also alleged that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) failed to address the road right-of-way issues, withheld the budget, and showed sluggish action from its legal office. When GMA Regional TV One Mindanao visited the site on Saturday, August 2, 2025, no sign was found at the site. In a statement, DPWH-Davao (DPWH-11) denied the claims made in the viral post and clarified that the project is not being politicized. 'The claim that the project is being delayed due to alleged political issues involving the current administration is false and misleading,' DPWH-11 said. DPWH-11 said the Maa-Magtuod Flyover project has been fully funded since 2022, and the funds needed for the completion of the project have already been released. It added that civil works are ongoing at 82.5 percent. The agency explained that the project is facing minor concerns on road right-of-way involving a few properties and utilities. Most of these concerns have already been resolved while some are awaiting funds for settlement. 'As of now, four properties have been tagged as urgent for acquisition and are currently being processed by the office. The acquisition took time for these properties due to existing mortgage lien issues with their land titles. Yet, the office is actively coordinating with their respective mortgagee banks,' DPWH-11 added. DPWH-11 also coordinated with the Davao Light and Power Company and telecommunication companies for the relocation of the poles affected. DPWH-11 assured the public that the project remains a top priority. The government has allocated more than P1.4 billion for the project. The construction began in 2021 and is expected to be finished by 2026.

Petron nets P5.3B in H1 2025
Petron Corp. on Tuesday reported a decline in first-half net income, as the Ang-led fuel retailer reported a double-digit decline in its revenues during the period on the back of lower international oil prices and decreased volumes from trading operations in Singapore. Petron reported a P5.3-billion net income in the first half of the year, down from P6.023 billion in the comparable period of 2024. Overall sales declined by 13% to P386.4 billion, as the consolidated sales volume was dragged by transactions in Singapore to 64.2 million barrels. The combined sales volume from the Philippines and Malaysia climbed 3% to 56.2 million barrels. 'Our results continue to reflect our resilience in overcoming market challenges, while highlighting the strength of the Petron brand across different customers and industries,' Petron Corp. president and chief executive officer Ramon Ang said in an emailed statement. 'We remain confident in our ability to drive growth as we further enhance our operations towards greater efficiency and sustainability,' he added. The company raised P32 billion from its latest fixed-rate bond offering, with its P25-billion base offer 1.3 times oversubscribed leading to a P7-billion oversubscription. Proceeds will be used for the redemption of its Series D and E bonds, and funding for general corporate purposes.
