KUCHING (May 17): The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Kuching branch reaffirmed its commitment to the community by successfully hosting a night counter service at Life Café in Padungan here on Thursday, drawing strong participation from tertiary students and local residents.
The event, part of an ongoing initiative to assist applicants for the state's Special Financial Assistance (BKK), was organised in response to positive demand following the previous week's session.
According to Youth chief Nicholas Wung, the branch helped more than 300 tertiary students apply for the RM1,200 special living aid over two consecutive weeks.
The branch, he added, also offered both on-site application processing and remote support through social media.
'In addition to in-person service, we received numerous inquiries and provided guidance through online channels,' said Wung in a statement.
Besides the students' living aid applications, the counter also offered a range of services including Kenyalang Gold Card registration, social welfare subsidies, OKU registration, legal consultations, and document certification.
Wung shared that Miri mayor Adam Yii, who happened to walk past the area at that time, visited the site to observe the operation and expressed praise for the team's down-to-earth service delivery and responsiveness.
'The volunteers, comprising members from the Branch Committee, Youth Wing, Women's Wing, and community leaders have provided their assistance, ensuring the programme's smooth process.
'Assistance extended beyond form filling, including help with parental income verification, Sarawak ID registration, and income documentation for families without formal proof,' he stated.
Wung encouraged eligible tertiary students and local residents to seize the opportunity and reaffirmed the branch's commitment to continuing services as needed.

Some workers take on two jobs, delay marriage to cope with living costs

KUALA LUMPUR: The minimum wage rate of RM1,700 has brought some relief to young workers, but some say it remains inadequate to cope with the rising cost of living, especially for those residing in urban areas. A report by Utusan Malaysia found that employees are being forced to make adjustments to their lifestyles to make ends meet. These include holding down two jobs, bringing packed meals to work, cooking at home, and even postponing major life plans such as marriage. Mohammad Noriman Ahmad Zarkhoni, 22, is among those feeling the pinch. He works as both a food delivery rider and a factory operator, as his RM1,500 income from delivery work alone is not enough to cover his monthly expenses. Although the dual workload is exhausting, he said he has little choice. "Time management is crucial to avoid feeling overwhelmed. So far, I'm managing. "However, I do hope there will be an improvement in the minimum wage, especially since the cost of living in the capital is much higher than in rural areas," he said. Similarly, 25-year-old Muhd Rafiq Ridzuan Zainatul Rahman said his income as a food delivery rider is not enough to save for a wedding, forcing him to delay his marriage plans. "The intention to marry is there, but since my savings are still insufficient, I've chosen to continue saving to cover the cost of the wedding ceremony in the future. "I think postponing it is the best decision for now, considering the rising cost of living. I'll need to work longer in order to save enough," he said. Thaqif Adib Marozi, 23, said he also brings his own meals to work but only has time to cook on weekends due to a packed weekday schedule. "On weekdays, I usually eat just once a day and opt for the cheapest meals available. I hope the prices of raw ingredients won't continue to rise," he said. On July 23, the Human Resources Ministry announced that the full implementation of the RM1,700 minimum monthly wage will take effect on Aug 1. It will apply to all employers, regardless of the number of employees. Failure to comply with the Minimum Wage Order under the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 is an offence punishable by a fine of up to RM10,000 per employee.

Sarawak aligns tourism development with RMK13 investment zones

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has expressed readiness to align its tourism development strategies with the newly announced tourism investment zones under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, stated that while the state already possesses strong tourism offerings, further collaboration with federal initiatives will enhance mutual benefits. 'If the tourism investment zones include areas like Mulu, Niah, the Kuching Delta, and the Rainforest World Music Festival, then we are already aligned. We just need deeper discussions,' he said. He emphasised the importance of avoiding overlaps and instead strengthening ongoing and future efforts. Sarawak's tourism sector has shown promising growth this year, with visitor numbers nearing five million and revenue surpassing RM1 billion. Abdul Karim, who also oversees youth and entrepreneurial development, stressed that socioeconomic programs for bumiputera must align with Sarawak's existing ecosystem to ensure effective implementation. He welcomed RMK13's focus on expanding business opportunities through funding, training, and mentorship, noting that the state government has similar initiatives under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. Speaking at the Youth EdXchange Programme 2025, he highlighted the importance of youth empowerment. 'Your experiences—from community immersion to sustainability workshops—prove that when given a platform, young people lead with purpose,' he said. The two-day event, attended by 60 participants, fostered cross-cultural collaboration among local and ASEAN youth. - Bernama
