Did You Even Think Of...: Dr S Jaishankars Bahawalpur, Muridke Poser To Opposition On Operation Sindoor

India.com28-07-2025
Minister of External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar on Monday lashed out at opposition members for questioning the success of Operation Sindoor, especially when the Pahalgam attackers were not tracked down and eliminated. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the Operation Sindoor debate, Dr Jaishankar said that India clearly told partner countries that it's exercising its right to defend against terrorist attacks. He also questioned the opposition members whether they can imagine attacking Bahawalpur and Muridke terror bases inside Pakistan during their tenure.
"Which one of you imagined that Bahawalpur and Muridke would be brought down the way it was..." said Dr S Jaishankar. The EAM also said that the satellite pictures of the Pakistani air bases are available on the internet for everyone to see.
Dr Jaishankar said that it was important to send a clear, strong and resolute message after the Pahalgam attack. "Our red lines had been crossed. and we had to make it very apparent that there would be serious consequences as a result," said Jaishankar. He highlighted steps taken by India post the Pahalgam attack like putting the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in abeyance with immediate effect until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism. The other measures included - the Integrated Check Post Attari was closed with immediate effect; Pakistani nationals who are travelling under SARC visa exemption scheme will no longer be allowed to do that; the Defence, Naval and Air advisors of the Pakistani High Commission would be declared Persona non grata and the overall strength of the High Commission would be brought down to 30 from the number of 55.
"It was very clear that, after the first set of steps approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security, India's response to the Pahalgam attack would not stop there. Our task from a diplomatic perspective, from a foreign policy approach, was to shape the global understanding of the Pahalgam attack. What we tried to do was to bring out to the international community Pakistan's long-standing use of cross-border terrorism. We highlighted the history of terrorism in Pakistan and how this particular attack was meant to target the economy of Jammu and Kashmir and to sow communal discord among the people of India," he said.
The Union Minister further said that the focus for India's diplomacy was the UN Security Council. "The challenge for us was that at this particular point, Pakistan is a member of the Security Council and we are not.....I am glad to say that if you look at the Security Council statement of 25th April, the members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack. They affirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. And most importantly, the Council underlined the need to hold the perpetrators, organisers, financers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice."

Rahul Gandhi hosts key INDIA bloc dinner today. What's on the agenda, and who's attending?

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi will host the INDIA bloc leaders for a dinner meeting in the national capital on Thursday. This will be the first physical meeting of the INDIA bloc after the one held a day after the Lok Sabha elections at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's home in New Delhi. The meeting will devise a joint strategy for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar and discuss fielding a joint candidate for the Vice Presidential elections scheduled for 9 September. The Election Commission of India issued a notification on Thursday for the 9 September election to the vice president's post, kickstarting the nomination process. The dinner will be followed by a protest march to the Election Commission's (EC) office in New Delhi on Friday. The INDIA bloc demonstration will be against the ongoing SIR exercise in Bihar that the Opposition alleges could allow the manipulation of electoral rolls. Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav have confirmed their presence. All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee is also likely to attend. So will Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin, who is said to be unwell. Uddhav Thackeray from Shiv Sena (UBT) and leaders from Nationalist Congress Party (SP), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, and other INDIA bloc constituents are also expected to attend the meeting. National Conference President Farooq Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti are also attending the meeting. This meeting will decide our joint strategy against the manipulation of electoral rolls in Bihar. The SIR row in Bihar has become a glue for the divided INDIA bloc to come together, as it has not let Parliament function, barring last week's debate on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor and its aftermath. The INDIA bloc has been demanding a debate in the Parliament over SIR. Key Takeaways The INDIA bloc aims to unify against electoral challenges in Bihar. The dinner meeting signifies a strategic alliance among opposition leaders. Upcoming Vice Presidential elections will see a collaborative candidate effort.

BRS leader Harish Rao describes Congress' dharna as ‘drama, utter flop'

HYDERABAD: BRS leader and former minister T Harish Rao on Wednesday described the 'drama' enacted by the Congress in Delhi in the name of 42 per cent reservations for BCs as an 'utter flop'. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi did not turn up for the agitation, he pointed out. 'AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge too did not turn up as he indirectly hinted that Bihar elections were more important for Congress than the BCs,' he said. 'Not just Telangana people, even Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Kharge too believe that there was no sincerity in the dharna,' Harish Rao added. The BRS leader alleged that Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy made contradictory statements on enhancement of BC reservations. 'During the dharna, Revanth Reddy made it very clear that he was seeking 42 per cent BC reservations only in Telangana and not in Gujarat or Uttar Pradesh. But Rahul Gandhi says that the agitation was meant not just for the BCs of Telangana but the entire country. Their contradictory statements exposed the double-standards of the Congress on BCs,' he said. Quoting Abraham Lincoln, the former irrigation minister concluded: 'You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.'

Rail projects delayed in Karnataka as 3,312 hectares yet to be acquired: Union minister Vaishnaw

SHIVAMOGGA: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in reply to an unstarred question from Davanagere MP Dr Prabha Mallikarjun in Lok Sabha, said that the railway projects in the state are delayed due to the delay in land acquisition by the state government. He stated that of the total of 8,969 hectares of land required for the projects, only 5,657 hectares (63%) have been acquired. A total of 3,312 hectares are yet to be acquired for these projects. Dr Prabha asked the minister whether the government has any proposal to carry out a survey for the railway line between Harihara - Honnali - Shivamogga (79 km). The minister replied that the project has been pending due to the state government's "inability to share the cost and to provide land free of cost". The minister also listed out other pending projects delayed due to the delay in land acquisition. He said that the Harihara - Honnali - Shivamogga project has been sanctioned on a 50:50 cost sharing basis, and land to be provided free of cost by the state government for Rs 832 crore. The Railways had requested the state government to acquire the entire land of 488 hectares for the project. However, the state government has shown their "inability to share the cost and to provide land free of cost. The project has been held up on this account," the minister said. Vaishnaw blamed the state government for the delay in the execution of these projects due to the slow pace of land acquisition. "Despite the fact that the Centre has been progressively allocating record funds for railway projects, many projects in Karnataka are still delayed due to the slow pace of land acquisition," he said and listed out the delayed projects.
