Rahul Gandhi hosts key INDIA bloc dinner today. What's on the agenda, and who's attending?
This will be the first physical meeting of the INDIA bloc after the one held a day after the Lok Sabha elections at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's home in New Delhi.
The meeting will devise a joint strategy for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar and discuss fielding a joint candidate for the Vice Presidential elections scheduled for 9 September.
The Election Commission of India issued a notification on Thursday for the 9 September election to the vice president's post, kickstarting the nomination process.
The dinner will be followed by a protest march to the Election Commission's (EC) office in New Delhi on Friday. The INDIA bloc demonstration will be against the ongoing SIR exercise in Bihar that the Opposition alleges could allow the manipulation of electoral rolls.
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav have confirmed their presence. All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee is also likely to attend. So will Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin, who is said to be unwell. Uddhav Thackeray from Shiv Sena (UBT) and leaders from Nationalist Congress Party (SP), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, and other INDIA bloc constituents are also expected to attend the meeting.
National Conference President Farooq Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti are also attending the meeting.
This meeting will decide our joint strategy against the manipulation of electoral rolls in Bihar.
The SIR row in Bihar has become a glue for the divided INDIA bloc to come together, as it has not let Parliament function, barring last week's debate on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor and its aftermath. The INDIA bloc has been demanding a debate in the Parliament over SIR.

Govt to brief Tharoor-led panel today on ties with US
Shashi Tharoor NEW DELHI: The standing committee on external affairs, headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor , will be briefed on the latest developments in India's foreign policy on Monday, official sources said. The panel will be briefed by representatives of the ministry of external affairs and the ministry of commerce & industry on the developments in India's foreign policy with special reference to US-India trade negotiations and tariffs, they said. The MEA told the parliamentary panel ahead of the meeting that the US decision to impose secondary sanctions on India had forced it into a geopolitical contest not of its making. Despite the erosion of trust, it said India remained committed to engaging constructively with the US. Earlier this week, on Friday, while responding to the 50% tariffs on India imposed by the US, the Congress MP had said India must also safeguard its interests. "What is happening is concerning. A country with which we had close relations, and we were working as strategic partners. If that country has changed its behaviour, then India will have to think about many things... Perhaps in the coming two to three weeks, we can hold talks and find a way out. India will also have to look after its own interests," Tharoor said.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi 's "vote chori" allegations drew reminder notices Sunday from the chief electoral officers of three states, with Haryana and Maharashtra seeking affidavits under oath, and Karnataka asking for documents in a specific case involving a woman who publicly disputed his claim that she voted twice in 2024 LS olls. "On inquiry, Shakun Rani (the voter in question from Mahadevapura) stated that she has voted only once and not twice, as alleged by you...," Karnataka CEO V Anbukkumar said in his second letter to Rahul. "You are kindly requested to sign and return the enclosed Declaration/Oath under rule 20(3) (B) of the Registration of Electoral Rules 1960 with the names of such electors," it said. In an identical notice, Haryana CEO A Sreenivas gave Rahul 10 days to submit an affidavit under oath specifying his allegations about vote fraud along with supporting documents. A day after the presser, Sreenivas said his office had shared copies of electoral rolls with representatives of Congress during the meetings ahead of elections. The CEO said if the party doubted the fairness of the process, it would need to challenge the voting results in Punjab and Haryana HC and provide details of the "claims and objections made before officials". The first letter from Sreenivas to Rahul was sent on Saturday. Sources said flashing a "forged document" at a presser could spell legal consequences for Rahul, including an FIR for violation of Section 337 of BNS, which stipulates a jail term of up to seven years.
