The court had stayed the announcement of the WBJEE-2025 results and instructed the WBJEE Board to create a new merit list with a seven per cent reservation for the 66 OBC categories recognised by the state before 2010, and publish it within 15 days.
The HC had found the WBJEE Board's initial merit list to be in violation of its previous order in May regarding OBC reservations.
Asked to comment on the arrest of Jadavpur University alumnus Hindol Majumdar for allegedly plotting an attack on Basu's convoy on the JU campus, the minister said, "I have no information about this. I think this is entirely in the domain of the police. I have no comments to offer."
Majumdar was arrested on Wednesday morning after landing in India, for allegedly planning an attack on Basu's convoy on March 1.

New Education Bill Comes Into Effect
New Delhi: Education minister Ashish Sood on Friday hosted a "parents' town hall" in Janakpuri to brief parents on the benefits of the school fee regulation law. The event followed the notification of the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2025. Chief minister Rekha Gupta termed the legislation as a "revolution in Delhi's education sector" and expressed happiness that it was coming into effect on Independence Day. The bill aims to keep a check on arbitrary fee hikes by private schools. "This Act is a big relief for Delhiites. They cannot be fleeced anymore. Addressing the parents, Sood said the bill would ensure transparency in fee fixation, active participation of parents and veto power on fee hikes. "The previous govts did not create a robust system or law for fee regulation. We prepared this bill after discussions with parents and several education experts, which will not only curb the commercialisation of education but also protect children's dreams," he said. Sood clarified that due to a loophole in the 1973 law, only 300 of Delhi's 1,700 private schools were subject to fee regulation. However, with the new law, all private schools will now come under the ambit of fee regulation, he said. The new process also lays down specific timelines – committee decision by July 15, district-level decision by July 30 and the final decision by Sept. Delhi Notifies Law to Curb Arbitrary Fee Hikes in Private Schools
The Delhi government has notified the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Act, 2025, aimed at ending arbitrary fee hikes by private schools. It mandates that any school raising fees without government approval will face fines of Rs 1 Lakh to Rs 10 lakh, with double penalties for failing to refund excess charges. For enforcement, the Director of Education will have powers equivalent to a Sub-Divisional Magistrate. Mr Sood said the measure was drafted after consultations with parents and education experts. "Private schools are necessary for Delhi, but transparency and accountability in fee fixation are equally essential," he told the gathering. The new process sets strict timelines - school-level committee decisions by July 15 every year, district-level by July 30, and final clearance by September. If no decision is made within 45 days, the matter will move to an appellate committee. "The government's intent is good, but it looks like they have done it in a hurry. The main ethos of fee regulation is audit, and that is completely absent. Secondly, the composition of the school-level committee is nothing more than an extension of the school management. The penalties are a good aspect of the law, though," a parent told NDTV.
