‘I stand on that.' Why Dolphins RB Jaylen Wright expects a breakout season in Year 2
That was a point of emphasis for second-year running back Jaylen Wright following a standout performance Thursday. The 22-year-old looked every bit the speedster that the Miami Dolphins picked in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft but with one major caveat: patience, something he believes can boost his playing time in 2025.
'Last year, it was just me out there just running,' Wright said. 'Now I know where to look. I know where the defender is going to be. I know where the run is supposed to hit. So that's definitely the biggest step for me from year one to year two.'
Wright's patient approach led to two runs of more 10 yards, one of which saw the tailback cut back to avoid a closing hole in order to pick up a big gain.
'I'm just pressing the blocks and reading them inside out,' Wright said of that particular play. Again, Wright used his favorite words. 'Just being patient then using my ability that God blessed me with to burst through the hole.'
The improved patience comes after a year behind veteran running back Raheem Mostert who signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2025 offseason. Miami's single-season touchdown record-holder, Mostert helped Wright learn the importance of patience — both on and off the field. Wright couldn't have asked for a better teacher: the 33-year-old tailback's best year did not happen until his age 31 season, a lesson of patience in of itself.
'I learned a lot from [Mostert] – being patient – and that's what I'm doing' Wright said. 'When the runs are not clean, just be patient and keep putting the ball in the right spot and eventually it's going to pop.'
As a rookie, Wright saw his playing time diminish over the course of the season. The reasons were unclear – coach Mike McDaniel indicated that it was 'very competitive room' that had 'little room for error' – yet the message sent by the then-rookie's lack of snaps was clear: there were better options.
'When we had exit meetings, I was talking to Jaylen Wright about being able to non-verbally communicate to me his hunger for an increased role,' McDaniel said in early June. 'I see better than I hear, and four OTAs in, I can see him following through with that.'
Put differently, it would seem that the game has officially begun to slow down for Wright who recently put the entire NFL world on notice.
'I just really feel like and I know I can be a top back in this league,' Wright said July 17 on 'Up & Adams.' 'I feel like just my skill set, my ability and the system I'm in, it sets me up to be great.'
Wright doubled down on that message on Thursday.
'I stand on that,' Wright said. 'If things play out right this year and I know it will so I'm very confident.
There's a bit of a precedent to Wright's bold claim. After a record-setting rookie season, De'Von Achane came back with a vengeance in 2024, racking up 1,531 all-purpose yards, which ranked 13th in the league ahead of backs like Alvin Kamara, Joe Mixon and Breece Hall. His six receiving touchdowns also tied receiver Tyreek Hill for second on the team.
Still, Wright will have to beat out free agent signee Alexander Mattison as well as 2025 sixth-round draft pick Ollie Gordon II, who was crowned the top college running backs in 2023, for more playing time. That said, there's still a chance that he can snag a co-starter role as McDaniel has previously named two running back starters.
'You have to let the players determine who gets the ball and how frequently and how much during the game,' McDaniel said in Aug. 2024. 'I think the cool thing when you have a position group that on the front end you know by NFL standards is very, very talented – one of the most, if not the most talented that you can remember or you've been on teams with – you don't worry about how that is going to unfold. You let it unfold and it's always very obvious.'
Added McDaniel: 'You can tell by how people execute their blocks and their belief of the player carrying the ball and you have to be able to be open-minded to how it plays out.'

Chicago Bears to honor Virginia McCaskey, Steve McMichael in 2025
The Chicago Bears will honor matriarch Virginia Halas McCaskey and Hall of Fame defensive tackle Steve McMichael with jersey patches during the 2025 season, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Bears chairman George McCaskey told the Sun-Times that the Bears will wear a football-shaped patch with Virginia McCaskey's initials inside for every game this season, starting with next week's preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. Virginia McCaskey passed away on Feb. 6 at the age of 102. The patch will be placed on player's jerseys above their hearts. The football is orange with navy stitches and a white outline. The navy 'M' is outlined in white and larger than the other two letters — V to the player's right, and H, for Halas, to the left. It's a nod to Virginia's father, George S. Halas, who died on Oct. 31, 1983. The Bears wore a similar patch for the remainder of the season, and it soon became permanent with the "GSH" on the left jersey sleeve which remains to this day. 'We thought it'd be appropriate to have a patch that mirrored her dad's after he passed away,' McCaskey told the Sun-Times. 'It came out great. We like the look of it.' The Bears also will not be wearing an alternate or throwback uniform this season as they remember Virginia McCaskey. The Bears will also honor McMichael, who passed away in April after a battle with ALS, with a decal on the back of their helmets. It will feature a navy football outlined in orange with white laces and his No. 76 in the middle. That same logo will be featured on Soldier Field grass on game day. McMichael was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2024, less than a year before his death. The Bears have found a way to honor two important figures in their storied history who passed away this season, and fans will get their first glimpse on Aug. 10 when Chicago hosts the Dolphins for their first preseason game. Cleveland Browns star out for season with torn Achilles
The worst has been confirmed by Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. The Browns' defensive back suffered a lower leg injury on Tuesday, which many were speculating was a torn Achilles. "Martin Emerson Jr. suffered what's an Achilles injury in today's practice," Mike Garafolo reported Tuesday. "He'll undergo imaging to determine the full extent of the injury but the expectation is it's a significant tear." After further evaluation, it was confirmed Emerson tore his Achilles and is done for the 2025 season. "CB Martin Emerson Jr. tore his Achilles and is out for the entire 2025 season," Ari Meirov confirms.. "A brutal blow for Emerson Jr., who was entering the final year of his rookie deal. He has started 33 games over three seasons, recording 4 interceptions, 34 pass deflections, and 202 tackles." The Browns' secondary is very thin when it comes to boundary cornerbacks. Not having Emerson could lead to Cleveland hitting the free agent market to bring in a proven veteran. Dolphins CB Kader Kohou to go on season-ending IR with knee injury
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins starting cornerback Kader Kohou will miss the 2025 season after suffering a knee injury in practice on Saturday. Miami coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday morning that Kohou, a former undrafted player who quickly worked his way into a starting role, will go on injured reserve. Kohou went down grabbing at his right knee after a one-on-one rep against receiver Tyreek Hill during practice. He remained down for a couple minutes while being looked at by trainers before walking gingerly but under his own power off the Dolphins' practice field. 'I've seen him come into the league with nothing promised and earn his spot within this team,' McDaniel said. 'And this year in particular, I saw him ascend to a different level trying to take the reigns of his career and get his game to an even higher level. For that, and the timing of it, I was crushed until I talked to Kader, and honestly Kader made me feel a little bit better about where he was at, simply by his mindset.' Kohou signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and has recorded 180 tackles, one sack and three interceptions in three years. It's a significant blow to Miami's secondary that has undergone significant changes since the end of last season. All of the Dolphins' starters in the secondary — including All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who was traded, and safety Jevon Holland, who left in free agency — are gone. Miami recently signed veteran cornerback Mike Hilton, who figures to be the likely starter in the slot this season. Former Raiders and Patriots cornerback Jack Jones also recently signed with Miami to compete for an outside cornerback spot. Other options on the boundary include veteran Kendall Sheffield, Cam Smith and Storm Duck. McDaniel said he feels good about the Dolphins' depth at cornerback right now, but did not rule out the possibility of signing another experienced player. 'If there was a situation in a week where I didn't feel that we were good,' McDaniel added, "(general manager) Chris (Grier) and I would talk, and we would get something done there." Miami's secondary will also be without Ashtyn Davis for a while after the safety suffered a noncontact injury in practice this week. McDaniel said the team is still evaluating the extent of the injury, but it isn't expected to be season-ending. ___ AP NFL:
