Xander Bogaerts, Padres pour it on early to beat Nationals
Elias Diaz had a home run and a single, and Jake Cronenworth added two doubles for the Padres, who have won five of seven.
Pivetta (10-2) allowed a run on three hits, struck out five and walked one. In his last five starts, Pivetta is 3-0 with a 0.57 ERA, 36 strikeouts and six walks.
Riley Adams homered for the Washington run and Luis Garcia Jr. and Paul DeJong each had two hits. The Nationals have lost six of seven.
Washington All-Star MacKenzie Gore (4-9) endured his worst outing of the season, allowing eight runs on eight hits -- two of them home runs -- in 2 1/3 innings.
The Padres jumped on Gore in the first. Fernando Tatis Jr. led off with a walk, Luis Arraez singled and Manny Machado walked to load the bases. Bogaerts then turned on a first-pitch fastball, homering to left to make it 4-0. Before the inning was over, Jose Iglesias and Cronenworth hit back-to-back doubles for another run.
With two outs in the second, Machado walked, Bogaerts singled and Gavin Sheets lined a single to center off shortstop CJ Abrams' glove to make it 6-0.
Cronenworth doubled leading off the third and Bryce Johnson bunted him to third. Diaz homered to left on a 2-0 pitch to increase the lead to 8-0 and end Gore's afternoon.
Adams homered to center off Pivetta with two outs in the fifth to make it 8-1.
Washington's James Wood lined a single to right-center in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a career-worst 0-for-20 skid.
The Nationals loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Bryan Hoeing retired Abrams on a fly to left.

Behind Matt Shaw, Cubs chase series win vs. Royals
July 23 - The All-Star break provided a welcome respite for Chicago Cubs rookie third baseman Matt Shaw, who is eager to leave his first-half struggles behind. Shaw looks to maintain his recent surge when the Cubs face the visiting Kansas City Royals on Wednesday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game series. The Cubs are tied with the Milwaukee Brewers atop the National League Central, while the Royals are 4 1/2 games back of the final wild-card spot in the American League. Kansas City recorded a season-high run total in Monday's 12-4 win before being shut out for the 11th time on Tuesday. The Royals were stymied by Cubs starter Matthew Boyd, who pitched seven scoreless innings in the Cubs' 6-0 victory. Chicago center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong returned after missing one game with a bruised right knee and went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Shaw contributed two hits and an RBI and has hit safely in all five games since the All-Star break, batting .533 (8-for-15) with two home runs and five RBIs during the stretch. Despite Shaw's encouraging play over the past week, his disappointing batting average (.221) has led many to believe that Chicago could be shopping for a third baseman ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. For his part, Shaw said he is bringing a fresh perspective to the game following the All-Star break. "I think getting some time off was really important," Shaw said. "That was nice. Just kind of reassessing the first half and kind of realizing some of my motivations in the game allowed me to feel a little more comfortable in the box." Chicago will send right-hander Colin Rea (8-3, 3.80 ERA) to the mound in the series finale. He won his fourth straight start last Friday in a 4-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Rea, 35, gave up one run over five frames in the outing and has allowed a total of five runs across 23 2/3 innings over his last four starts. Jonathan India is 2-for-10 (.200) with a home run against Rea, who has a 7.71 ERA in three career games (two starts) versus Kansas City. The Royals will counter with right-hander Seth Lugo (6-5, 2.94), who allowed a season-high five runs in six innings and received a no-decision against the Miami Marlins last Friday. Lugo, 35, has posted a 3.93 ERA in three outings this month after going 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA in five outings in June. Dansby Swanson is 2-for-18 (.111) against Lugo, who is 0-4 with a 5.91 ERA in 14 career games (four starts) versus the Cubs. The Royals are hoping to bounce back after being held to six singles in Tuesday's loss, including one by catcher Salvador Perez. Perez, 35, is batting .359 with eight home runs and 17 RBIs in his last 17 games. "It's a long season, just trying to make adjustments," Perez said. "My first half was a little slow, and I just kept working, talking to my hitting coach. I try to do my best every time I step out to home plate and help my team to win." --Field Level Media

Brandon Pfaadt, Diamondbacks aim to shut down Astros
July 23 - Right-hander Brandon Pfaadt can tie his career high in victories for a season on Wednesday when the Arizona Diamondbacks bid to salvage the finale of a three-game series against the Houston Astros. Pfaadt (10-6, 4.82 ERA) enters the game in Phoenix after arguably his best two starts of the season, one on either side of the All-Star break. He pitched a career-high eight innings and allowed two runs on four hits in an 8-2 victory at San Diego on July 9. A seemingly surprise choice to start the post-break opener Friday against St. Louis, Pfaadt blanked the Cardinals on four hits through seven innings in a 7-3 win. His success has come with a renewed usage of his sweeper. Pfaadt threw a season-high 33 sweepers against the Cardinals, a predominantly right-handed hitting team. "That's probably my best pitch and that's probably the best it's felt all year," Pfaadt said. "We went to it a lot, and it worked. Just trying to be efficient. Tried to make good pitches early on." The Astros' lineup similarly features several right-handed batters. The Diamondbacks bet on Pfaadt in the offseason when the sides agreed to a five-year, $45 million contract extension that kicks in next season. He had 11 wins in 2024. Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen are pitching on expiring contracts, and both have been mentioned as possible trade deadline pieces. Corbin Burnes is expected to miss most if not all of 2026 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June. Houston right-hander Brandon Walter (1-3, 3.66) will get the start in the series finale. The Astros stretched their lead in the American League West to five games Tuesday. Framber Valdez won his 10th straight game and rookie Brice Matthews hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning in a 3-1 win. Matthews has three homers in the last two games. "These guys are fighting," Houston manager Joe Espada said. "This is a group that is not going to quit. Framber being Framber. We needed that." The D-backs have lost two in a row after winning four in a row. They remain 5 1/2 games behind San Diego for the final National League wild-card berth with three other teams to pass. Arizona loaded the bases on three singles to open the ninth inning but did not score. The Astros appeared to be willing to concede a run when Geraldo Perdomo singled with runners on first and second, but Josh Naylor was held at third before a strikeout and a double play ended the game. "It was a gut punch today for sure," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "Held tight for seven innings, but we just couldn't close the deal." Walter, who has yet to face Arizona in his career, has made eight starts while stepping into an injury-filled rotation. The Astros placed Lance McCullers Jr. on the injured list with a blister on his right finger before Tuesday's game, their seventh starter on the injured list. Walter has made quality starts in each of his last two outings and five of his last seven. He gave up only three runs and five hits in his last two outings, but a lack of support saddled him with two losses. --Field Level Media
