Xander Bogaerts, Padres pour it on early to beat Nationals

Reuters20-07-2025
July 20 - Xander Bogaerts had a first-inning grand slam among his two hits, Nick Pivetta pitched six strong innings and the San Diego Padres beat the host Washington Nationals 8-1 on Sunday, taking the rubber game of the series.
Elias Diaz had a home run and a single, and Jake Cronenworth added two doubles for the Padres, who have won five of seven.
Pivetta (10-2) allowed a run on three hits, struck out five and walked one. In his last five starts, Pivetta is 3-0 with a 0.57 ERA, 36 strikeouts and six walks.
Riley Adams homered for the Washington run and Luis Garcia Jr. and Paul DeJong each had two hits. The Nationals have lost six of seven.
Washington All-Star MacKenzie Gore (4-9) endured his worst outing of the season, allowing eight runs on eight hits -- two of them home runs -- in 2 1/3 innings.
The Padres jumped on Gore in the first. Fernando Tatis Jr. led off with a walk, Luis Arraez singled and Manny Machado walked to load the bases. Bogaerts then turned on a first-pitch fastball, homering to left to make it 4-0. Before the inning was over, Jose Iglesias and Cronenworth hit back-to-back doubles for another run.
With two outs in the second, Machado walked, Bogaerts singled and Gavin Sheets lined a single to center off shortstop CJ Abrams' glove to make it 6-0.
Cronenworth doubled leading off the third and Bryce Johnson bunted him to third. Diaz homered to left on a 2-0 pitch to increase the lead to 8-0 and end Gore's afternoon.
Adams homered to center off Pivetta with two outs in the fifth to make it 8-1.
Washington's James Wood lined a single to right-center in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a career-worst 0-for-20 skid.
The Nationals loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Bryan Hoeing retired Abrams on a fly to left.

Bryce Harper cusses out Rob Manfred during meeting, per report

REQUIRED READING: MLB trade deadline rumors: Latest news, updates from around baseball Manfred was conducting one of his annual meetings with each MLB team, which resulted in tension with one of the sport's brightest stars. ESPN reported Manfred never explicitly mentioned a salary cap, however, discussions of MLB's economics frustrated Harper. The tensions come as MLB and the MLB Players Association's collective-bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 1, 2026. MLB owners and personnel alike have clamored for a salary cap implementation, as the league is the lone professional sport without one in North America. ESPN added the MLBPA overwhelmingly opposes a salary cap. According to the report, Harper said if MLB were to propose a salary cap, players "are not scared to lose 162 games." After Harper stood up to Manfred, who was standing in the middle of the room, Manfred said he was "not going to get the (expletive) out of here." Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos attempted to defuse the situation, according to the report. Harper and Manfred shook hands after the meeting, although Harper declined a phone call from Manfred the next day. "It was pretty intense, definitely passionate," Castellanos told ESPN. "Both of 'em. The commissioner giving it back to Bryce and Bryce giving it back to the commissioner. That's Harp. He's been doing this since he was 15 years old. It's just another day. I wasn't surprised." Harper and Manfred both declined to comment to ESPN. The current CBA, which was agreed upon in 2022, ended a 99-day lockout as the two sides negotiated terms. A potential salary cap implementation is one of the biggest current talking points of the next deal, which will be needed ahead of the 2027 season. "(Manfred) seems to be in a pretty desperate place on how important it is to get this salary cap because he's floating the word 'lockout' two years in advance of our collective bargaining agreement (expiration)," Castellanos told ESPN. "That's nothing to throw around. That's the same thing as me saying in a marriage, 'I think divorce is a possibility. It's probably going to happen.' You don't just say those things."

Riley Adams' homer lifts Nationals past Astros

July 29 - Riley Adams clubbed a two-out, tie-breaking home run in the seventh inning, and the visiting Washington Nationals rode a strong pitching performance to a 2-1 victory over the reeling Houston Astros on Monday. Adams socked his sixth homer this season to right field off Astros reliever Bryan King (3-2). His 348-foot shot set the table for relievers Luis Garcia and Jose Ferrer to preserve the win for reliever Konnor Pilkington (2-0). Kyle Finnegan recorded his 20th save with a perfect ninth. The Astros suffered their sixth consecutive loss at home. Two-out walks came back to bite both starting pitchers. Astros left-hander Framber Valdez delivered another exceptional performance and remained unbeaten over his last 14 starts. He etched his name in the franchise record books as well. Valdez struck out CJ Abrams and Josh Bell in the top of the first inning and stranded Paul DeJong at third base with a strikeout of Brady House to conclude the second. DeJong, who doubled with one out, was the first of three Nationals to record base hits against Valdez. Adams joined that list with his leadoff single in the third, but Valdez responded with strikeouts of Alex Call and Bell to close the inning following a one-out walk to Abrams. With his strikeout of Call, Valdez became the 10th pitcher in franchise history to record 1,000 career strikeouts. Starting with the Call strikeout, Valdez retired 10 consecutive batters. But with two outs in the sixth, Valdez walked Bell and Nathaniel Lowe followed with a double that rolled into the right-field corner and scored Bell from first base with the game-tying tally. Valdez matched his season high of 12 strikeouts while allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings. Nationals rookie right-hander Brad Lord carried a no-hit bid into the fifth inning and did not allow a baserunner until Yainer Diaz worked a two-out walk in that frame. Mauricio Dubon followed with a line-drive double to left that scored Diaz and gave the Astros a 1-0 lead. Houston snapped a streak of 18 consecutive games in which its opponent scored first. Lord limited the damage to a solo run in the fifth and departed with one out in the sixth. He allowed one hit and one walk while recording a pair of strikeouts. --Field Level Media
