First episode of ‘enthralling' Stephen King horror series available for free
Stranger Things fans looking to fill the hours before season 5 finally arrives are in look with another dose of horror.
The new MGM+ creepfest The Institute is vibes-wise on a par with the 80s shot of nostalgia over on Netflix – and the first two episodes drop this Sunday (July 13).
In an added bonus, the first episodes will be available to watch for free on Amazon Prime Video via a 7-day MGM+ trial for new subscribers, before having to add MGM+ as a channel to catch the rest.
The eight-episode run is based on Stephen King's 2019 novel of the same name and revolves around a shady government lab full of ne'er-do-well suits who are performing various horrible tests on children.
Think along the lines of the underground lab that traumatised Eleven. That is where 12-year-old brainiac Luke (Joe Freeman) is hauled off to. He's kidnapped in the middle of the night, right before he had been about to leave high school to study classes at MIT.
The teen hostages he joins all have special abilities, which the scary higher-ups at the facility want to harness for their dastardly (if not entirely sensical) purposes.
The ringleader is one steely Ms Sigsby (Mary-Louise Parker), with her right hand man head of security Stackhouse (Julian Richings) never far and a head of science Hendricks (Robert Joy) to round out the testing ground staff.
That's half the story. The other half concerns the local 'night knocker' Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes) who is essentially your friendly neighbourhood patrolman, having rolled into the quiet Maine town.
He starts to hear rumblings of not-good goings-ons at the supposed infectious diseases lab on the outskirts of the town. He's the white knight that might be able to charge in and free the kids – if they can't manage it for themselves first.
The reviews have already started rolling in for the show, which currently holds an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Senior TV Reporter Rebecca Cook shares her take…
Filmed in Nova Scotia and with MGM (owned by Mr Bezos) money doing the talking, the show looks excellent and has locked in performances. But you can't help feeling it's phoned in.
Plot points are seen coming a mile off and not enough work is done to get you to care much for the too-many characters – beyond the human impulse not to want to see children being tortured.
It might be unfair to lay all of this at the TV show's feet, given that that reviews of King's novel said it felt like he had tossed in a bunch of scraps from previous dishes (Firestarter, Carrie, Needful Things).
But you can't help feeling disappointed given this is King's work. Where are the bone-chilling creeps and fearsome embodiments of evil?
It's a noble tale of how we don't do right by kids and so are ourselves the baddies. You just wish it cared a bit more about teasing out the monstrosity rather than the message.
ScreenRant shared a rave eight out of 10 stars review, writing: 'The Institute proves to be far more than an X-Men or Stranger Things clone, and instead a captivating ride from start to finish.' More Trending
Meanwhile, The AV Club labelled it a 'compelling' adaptation of the King novel. 'The pulpy fun, with bouts of sentimentality, makes for an enjoyable summer horror viewing experience,' the reviewer wrote.
The show was labelled 'creepy' – albeit 'forgettable' – in The Hollywood Reporter, adding: 'But 'creepy' is as far as Bender and his fellow directors ever get, never even approaching 'terrifying' or 'disturbing'.'

The Institute will premiere exclusively in the UK on MGM+ on the 13th July.

Lily Allen hits out at 'horrible' ex who questioned her hygiene habits 'to feel powerful'
Lily Allen and her pal Miquita Oliver spoke about personal hygiene on a recent episode of the Miss Me? podcast, which they co-host, that was released by BBC Sounds last week Podcast host Lily Allen has said that she was accused of having poor hygiene by one of her exes. She has suggested that it was "a form of bullying and abuse," and questioned the "gall" of the ex, whose identity she did not disclose. Lily, 40, made the remarks on an episode of the Miss Me? podcast, which she co-hosts with her pal Miquita Oliver, 41. They took questions from listeners about personal hygiene in an episode that was released by BBC Sounds last week. One fan asked the pair: "My question for you on personal hygiene is has anybody ever told you that you smell bad? And if they have, have they delivered that news to you very kindly or has it been more of a judgement and an attack?" Lily, who recently split from her second husband, Stranger Things actor David Harbour, went on to say that one of her exes had accused her of smelling bad during the relationship. She however recalled asking other people in her life if they felt the same way. Addressing the question, Lily said: "Yeah, I have, actually. But I don't think ... I asked other people if they felt the same way. It was somebody I was in a relationship with would do it to me. And I don't think that it was real." Lily continued by saying on the podcast: "I think that it was like a form of bullying and abuse." Her long-time pal reacted: "It's a horrible one." Miquita added in the episode: "As bullying forms of abuse go, it's a really horrible one." Further sharing her thoughts in response to the suggestion by her co-host, Lily told Miquita: "Yeah, it was like ... done on purpose to make me feel self-conscious and s**t about myself." She added: "And make them feel powerful." Miquita then discussed her own experiences in response to the question submitted by the listener. The presenter said that some relatives had told her that she was a "stinky teenager" and that she "had to start wearing deodorant". She recalled: "I really didn't want to either when I was younger." Moments later, Lily was heard bringing the conversation back to her own experience as she further reflected. She said: "Thinking about it, the gall of this person that had the audacity to tell me that I had an issue with my personal hygiene." Lily said: "When I first met them, I went over to their house and there was actual skid marks on their bed." She later added on the podcast: "They had the audacity to come to me and tell me that I needed to brush my teeth, no honey!" Miss Me? is available on BBC Sounds, other podcast platforms and YouTube. Prepare to cry over newborn gorilla in David Attenborough's new BBC series
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video As the old saying goes that nothing is certain in life but death and taxes, I think it's fair to add that Sir David Attenborough narrating a heartfelt moment between a gorilla and her newborn baby is sure to bring a tear to your eye. Our favourite natural historian is back again on our screens as a new five-part BBC series called Parenthood is set to come out next month. The 99-year-old has continued to delight fans in the UK and across the world with his fascination for the weird and wonderful. This latest docu-series will explore the trials and tribulations of parenting within the animal kingdom. It will also highlight how it can be a 'high-stakes game in which some animal parents must come up with extraordinary strategies to give their young a head start'. Filmed over three years and across six continents, and narrated by Sir David, fans have been offered a sneak peek at the series. The clip, which shows a female western lowland gorilla and her newborn baby, is adorable from start to finish. Just moments old, the baby sleeps on his mother's chest surrounded by plants and trees in the jungle. Narrating, David says: 'Her journey will be challenging, full of excitement, uncertainty and complete commitment. 'There will be mistakes. There always are. But success for her and indeed for all parents has perhaps the greatest of consequences. It ensures the future of life on our planet'. Parenthood is set to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, beginning on August 3 at 7.20pm. It promises to show viewers never-before-seen animal behaviours while delivering a 'universal message about preserving the natural world.' Speaking to The Mirror, BBC head of specialist factual commissioning, Jack Bootle, described Parenthood as 'wonderful, warm, engaging, and surprising'. He said that it is 'made by some of the very best wildlife filmmakers in the world,' adding: 'I'm thrilled Sir David is joining us again to narrate it.' Director Jeff Wilson added that the whole team is 'incredibly proud' that Sir David was involved in the series. 'Silverback Films did a deep dive into the subject over 2.5 years, uncovering extraordinary new behaviours and jaw-dropping dramas using the world's best wildlife cinematographers and directors,' he explained/ 'We are incredibly proud that Sir David was on board with us to bring to the screen a landmark series that has something for everyone – moments of heart-warming tenderness, high stakes narrative, and a timely guide from a huge cast of unbelievably engaging cast of characters on how to navigate the complex world of Parenthood.' More Trending This comes after David's latest documentary, Ocean, coincided with the broadcaster and biologist's 99th birthday. The Blue Planet creator explored 'the untold story of the ocean', and how we can make a huge difference in its preservation. Speaking about the series to Metro, Planet Earth III executive producer Mike Gunton hailed the 'unbridled curiosity' that the documentary exhibits, adding that 'he's still absorbing science, absorbing knowledge'. A TV insider said: 'Rivals is the story of a web of rival individuals which is spun around a stately house, Penscombe Court, and their efforts to constantly outdo one another. 'That's exactly the basis for the new gameshow, which also has the background of a country pile and sees all the competitors try to outwit one another. 'Those in the know are already describing it as: 'A game of intellect and deception' which could be the catchline for one of Jilly's novels.' In Rivals, which debuted last year, Emily played an MPs saucy wife, Sarah Stratton, who was caught playing naked tennis with sexy lothario Rupert Campbell-Black at his country house. The scene caused such a stir it was nominated for Bafta for the top TV moment of the year. Meanwhile, Danny plays self-made millionaire Freddie Jones, who's trapped in a loveless marriage, but finds romance elsewhere. The second half of Jilly's book, first published in 1988, is now being turned into a second series which also airs in 2026. The four-parter, which also stars Daniel Mays and Sofia Barclay, is an adaptation of best-selling crime novels by Elizabeth George. All the action is spurred on by the dynamic between central character Tommy, who comes from a posh background, and a working class sergeant, Barbara Havers, played by Sofia. HAPPY Gilmore 2 has gone straight to the top of the Netflix trending chart. The sequel has been released nearly 30 years after the original, the highly anticipated sequel to the cult 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore sees Adam Sandler reprise his role as the golfer at the heart of the comedy. APPLE TV+ has renewed Stick for a second season. The golfing comedy drama is exec produced by Owen Wilson and also sees him play Pryce Cahill, an over-the-hill, ex-pro whose career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. Then he finds new purpose after meeting a troubled 17-year-old golfer called Santi. PADDY'S SUNDAY BLUES PADDY McGUINNESS has had, erm, a bit of a paddy after not being able to sail into his own BBC Radio 2 show. The comedian, TV presenter and DJ revealed security at the entrance of the Salford studios refuse him entry unless he shows his work pass. Shortly after kicking off his Sunday morning show last week, Paddy took to the airwaves to moan: 'How long have we been doing this show? It's been over a year, actually. 'I'm just wondering when security are going to know it's me. 'I'm not even bothered about them recognising me off the telly, or anything I've done throughout my career. 'Just the fact that I come in every Sunday for a year and a bloke still wouldn't let me in this morning.'
