Stranger Things fans looking to fill the hours before season 5 finally arrives are in look with another dose of horror.
The new MGM+ creepfest The Institute is vibes-wise on a par with the 80s shot of nostalgia over on Netflix – and the first two episodes drop this Sunday (July 13).
In an added bonus, the first episodes will be available to watch for free on Amazon Prime Video via a 7-day MGM+ trial for new subscribers, before having to add MGM+ as a channel to catch the rest.
The eight-episode run is based on Stephen King's 2019 novel of the same name and revolves around a shady government lab full of ne'er-do-well suits who are performing various horrible tests on children.
Think along the lines of the underground lab that traumatised Eleven. That is where 12-year-old brainiac Luke (Joe Freeman) is hauled off to. He's kidnapped in the middle of the night, right before he had been about to leave high school to study classes at MIT.
The teen hostages he joins all have special abilities, which the scary higher-ups at the facility want to harness for their dastardly (if not entirely sensical) purposes.
The ringleader is one steely Ms Sigsby (Mary-Louise Parker), with her right hand man head of security Stackhouse (Julian Richings) never far and a head of science Hendricks (Robert Joy) to round out the testing ground staff.
That's half the story. The other half concerns the local 'night knocker' Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes) who is essentially your friendly neighbourhood patrolman, having rolled into the quiet Maine town.
He starts to hear rumblings of not-good goings-ons at the supposed infectious diseases lab on the outskirts of the town. He's the white knight that might be able to charge in and free the kids – if they can't manage it for themselves first.
The reviews have already started rolling in for the show, which currently holds an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Senior TV Reporter Rebecca Cook shares her take…
Filmed in Nova Scotia and with MGM (owned by Mr Bezos) money doing the talking, the show looks excellent and has locked in performances. But you can't help feeling it's phoned in.
Plot points are seen coming a mile off and not enough work is done to get you to care much for the too-many characters – beyond the human impulse not to want to see children being tortured.
It might be unfair to lay all of this at the TV show's feet, given that that reviews of King's novel said it felt like he had tossed in a bunch of scraps from previous dishes (Firestarter, Carrie, Needful Things).
But you can't help feeling disappointed given this is King's work. Where are the bone-chilling creeps and fearsome embodiments of evil?
It's a noble tale of how we don't do right by kids and so are ourselves the baddies. You just wish it cared a bit more about teasing out the monstrosity rather than the message.
ScreenRant shared a rave eight out of 10 stars review, writing: 'The Institute proves to be far more than an X-Men or Stranger Things clone, and instead a captivating ride from start to finish.' More Trending
Meanwhile, The AV Club labelled it a 'compelling' adaptation of the King novel. 'The pulpy fun, with bouts of sentimentality, makes for an enjoyable summer horror viewing experience,' the reviewer wrote.
The show was labelled 'creepy' – albeit 'forgettable' – in The Hollywood Reporter, adding: 'But 'creepy' is as far as Bender and his fellow directors ever get, never even approaching 'terrifying' or 'disturbing'.'

The Institute will premiere exclusively in the UK on MGM+ on the 13th July.

Perth dancer explains why she's the first Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader to wear a ponytail after copping wild backlash for 'Aussie Coded' look

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader Faith Ward has responded to backlash about her hair after one detail set the internet alight. The 22-year-old, who was born in New Zealand but grew up in Western Australia, has become the first Kiwi to make the crew. Faith shared a social media post to celebrate the news on Sunday, proudly holding up her fresh DCC uniform with her blonde hair pulled back into a high ponytail. As hundreds of well-wishers and teammates flooded the comments section, Faith's hairstyle prompted a massive response from fans of the team. 'Congrats! But wondering why do you wear your hair in a ponytail, not down like everyone else?' one social media user asked. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Is no one inquiring about the ponytail moment?!?!?' a second fan commented. 'It looks weird that she's the only one with a ponytail,' another said. 'We all want to know about the ponytail please,' yet another wrote, with one viewer requesting the 'backstory.' 'Does anyone know if they made an exception with her hair? DCC has strict hair regulations,' another pointed out. One supporter even remarked that Faith's slick-back hair was 'so Aussie coded.' Faith was named as one of just six rookies to join the cheerleading team of 36 to perform during the upcoming season of the NFL. She stars in series two of Netflix 's hit reality TV series America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, which hit screens on June 20 after its debut run won over legions of fans. To make the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, all rookies must undergo makeovers during training camp, which can involve dramatic changes to their hair, makeup, and sometimes even teeth to help them achieve the 'DCC look '. These makeovers are a crucial part of assessing a candidate's potential and ensuring they meet the team's strict aesthetic standards. Back in 2016, DCC director Kelli Finglass told People that all cheerleaders 'wear their hair down, even in rehearsal.' 'It's about the girls being as glamorous as they can,' she said, adding that a 'DCC hairstyle' absolutely must 'dance well'. Faith confirmed she is the first DCC to be allowed an up-do in an interview with ABC Perth on Monday. 'It's crazy because obviously the DCC hairstyle is out, fluffy, voluminous, luscious, long locks. I've broken that stereotype,' she said. Strangely enough, it was a rehearsal to Thunderstruck by Australian rock legends AC/DC that Kelli suggested Faith put her hair up. 'So, I'm in rehearsal one of the days with my hair out and I am, you know, sweating after doing "Thunderstruck",' she explained. 'She's looking at me and she's like, "You know what? I really want to see what your hair would look like tied up".' Faith did as she was told and the departure from team regulation made her a standout. 'I go into uniform fittings and keep my hair up in hopes that she would like it still, and I walk in and she goes, "You're giving Ariana Grande! Like, we need an Ariana Grande moment on the team",' she said. 'I said, are you serious right now, Kelli? This is so exciting!' The famously strict director told the Aussie newcomer: 'Yeah, but I want your ponytail longer, I want it blonder and then I want to see a cameo day where I prefer you be with your hair out.' Faith said the reason she hasn't addressed online speculation is because she's awaiting Kelli's final verdict on her look. 'But right now, it's looking very hopeful that I will be a DCC with a ponytail,' she enthused. In her Instagram post, Faith said making the team was, 'The best day of my life.' 'This journey has been incredibly challenging, both physically and mentally, but I wouldn't change a thing,' she wrote. 'I've been pushed in ways I never imagined, I've learned and grown so much already.' Faith started dancing professionally at 18 on cruise ships, but now will perform in front of much larger crowds, with at least 90,000 people attending Cowboys games

Winona Ryder says she still plays poker with Al Pacino

Ryder, 53, is best known for starring in Tim Burton's 1988 movie Beetlejuice and its 2024 sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, along with playing Joyce Byers in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. She worked with The Godfather star Pacino, 85, in the films Simone (2002) and Looking For Richard (1996), adding that she was 'actively' in love with him. Ryder, who fronts the September issue of ELLE UK, told the magazine: 'I was absolutely in love with Al Pacino when I was working with him. 'We were doing that workshop for Richard III, which I didn't know was gonna be a movie. I was actively in love with him. 'He was obsessed with coffee, and he would take me all over New York – like, to the weirdest places – to try different coffees. I'm 22, or whatever. Finally, he's dropping me off wherever I'm staying, and I'm like, 'I love you, you know. I really am completely in love with you.' And he was like: 'Aw, honey, noooo.' 'Then, like 10 years later, I meet his girlfriend, who's younger than me. 'I still play poker with him sometimes. It's the best.' With a career spanning decades, Ryder credits actress Laura Dern for helping her navigate the industry and taking her under her wing. She said: 'I don't think I'd be here without her. I met her on my first screen test for Lucas – I didn't know what a screen test was. 'Laura was there to read for the older girl, and she talked me through it, 'cause I didn't know what the f*** was going on. 'She befriended me. I was literally 12 and – nobody knows this – she took me under her wing into my twenties. That relationship got me through.' She is now passing on her own wisdom to the younger cast members on the series Stranger Things. Ryder said: 'I've been trying to sort of change this narrative with the kids, because they have it drilled into them that they're so lucky and, you know, that this show 'made' them. 'I'm like: 'No. Netflix is so lucky. You guys are the special ones. Like, you guys are magic.'' Ryder is also known for starring in films including Heathers, Edward Scissorhands and Little Women. The September issue of ELLE UK is on sale from 31 July.

Has Letters from the Past been renewed for Season 2? Here's what we know:

Renewed or Cancelled? Letters from the Past is the latest Turkish drama on Netflix, armed with compelling characters and a touching storyline. Having watched the first season in its entirety, you may be wondering if this one has been renewed or cancelled. Well, wonder no more! What is Letters from the Past about? Letters from the Past is a Turkish mini-series about a group of students from 2003, who write letters to their future selves as part of a school project. Fast forward twenty years, and the letters resurface when Elif, the daughter of their former teacher, discovers them. In doing so, Elif discovers long-buried secrets, regrets, and emotional reckonings. As each letter is delivered, the past collides with the present, forcing everyone to confront who they were and who they've become. Has Letters from the Past been renewed for Season 2? At the time of writing, Letters from the Past has not been renewed for season 2. Generally Netflix would gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly. Other times, it can take months before a decision over a show's future is made. So far, Letters from the Past has had a pretty good reaction online from audiences and critics alike. Given the way this show is set up, and the ending we receive, we're predicting that this will not be renewed for a second season. The ending does leave the door open for more but Netflix have also listed this as a Limited Series. While not always a definitive mark of one-season only, unless this is a runaway hit (like Squid Game), it seems unlikely to be brought back for more. For this to happen, we do know that completion rate is a massive metric for streamers like Netflix so that could play a pivotal role here. For now, we'll have to wait and see what happens! What we know about season 2 so far: Barely anything is known about Letters from the Past season 2 at this point given Netflix haven't officially renewed or cancelled this one. Given the first season's conclusion, it does seem likely to return, but if it does perhaps we could see even more letters resurface, or even see things from a slightly different character perspective, although that does seem very unlikely. Should this one do well and garner a renewal nod, expect another 8 episodes and most of the main cast and crew to return. We will update this page when more information becomes available, so be sure to check this page out in the near future. Would you like to see Letters from the Past return for a second season?
