NEW DELHI: Actor and
Makkal Needhi Maiam
(MNM) chief
Kamal Haasan
got angry at a party meeting in Chennai after a group of men gifted him a sword on stage, prompting a brief moment of chaos and police intervention.
A video of the incident shows Haasan initially accepting the sword with a smile amid a crowd of men trying to pose with him.
As the situation became increasingly chaotic, Haasan's expression turned stern, and he was seen gesturing angrily at one man, ordering him to put the sword down.
A police officer stepped in, attempting to take control of the weapon. Eventually, the officer managed to place it down. Despite Haasan's clear displeasure, the man shook hands with him and struck a pose before being escorted off the stage by security personnel.

Controversy over Kannada remark intensifies
Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan is facing a political storm in neighbouring Karnataka. On Friday, the Karnataka high court observed that he has not issued an apology for his controversial remarks on the Kannada language and directed the producer of his latest film Thug Life to respond to a plea filed by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat.
The Parishat, which sought to intervene in the film producer's case against a statewide release ban, argued that Haasan's statements hurt Kannada linguistic and cultural sentiments. The controversy dates back to the audio release of Thug Life, where Haasan claimed that the Kannada language originated from Tamil, a remark that triggered backlash across Karnataka.
Multiple political leaders and the Karnataka Film Chamber had demanded an apology from the actor, but Haasan refused and ultimately withheld the film's release in the state on June 5, when it premiered globally.

Boat capsizes during ‘Kantara: Chapter 1' shoot, Rishab Shetty and crew members escape unhurt
A boat capsized in a reservoir during the shooting of Kannada film Kantara: Chapter 1, the prequel to 2022's Kantara, but actor-director Rishab Shetty and 30 crew members escaped unhurt, averting a major mishap, police sources said. The incident allegedly occurred during the filming in the Mani reservoir in the Masti Katte region of Shivamogga district, they added. The accident occurred in a shallow zone of the reservoir, near an area locally known as Melina Koppa, which helped avert a possible tragedy. However, cameras and other filming equipment are believed to have been lost to the water. The losses are yet to be assessed. According to the Thirthahalli police, who visited the spot, people onboard escaped unhurt. Police are investigating. Theatre artist Ramadas Poojary told PTI that making a movie on the spirits of Dakshina Kannada is always risky, as the spirits (Bhootas-Daivas) do not like the commercialisation of any activity connected to them. However, Rishab Shetty, who reveres the spirits, has conducted elaborate poojas to them and was given permission to make the film, says Poojary. A senior crew member who spoke to PTI on the condition of anonymity said some of the crew members panicked when the boat overturned, but since it was in the shallow waters, all of them waded through to safety. "It shows that the spirits have blessed us in some way," the crew member said. This incident marks yet another setback for Kantara: Chapter 1, which is grappling with a series of unfortunate events. In the past month alone, the production team has lost three artists to unrelated incidents, adding to the challenges faced by the film's crew.
