BCCI Left Red-Faced After 156.7 Kmph Star Gets Ruled Out Of IPL After Injury Resurfaces For 3rd Time

NDTV15-05-2025
The BCCI Centre of Excellence (erstwhile NCA) was left severely embarrassed after India's fastest bowler Mayank Yadav suffered yet another breakdown as a back injury ruled him out of the remainder of the IPL. "Yadav sustained a back injury and is ruled out for the remainder of the season," the IPL media release stated. New Zealand's William O Rourke will replace him in Lucknow Super Giants for the rest of the tournament. Mayank, who made a comeback after six months of intense rehabilitation under the Sports Science and Medical team at the COE, played two matches and gave away 100 runs in eight overs taking just two wickets. His speed had dropped by at least 15 kmph and from a side-on bowler, he had become a chest-on operator after re-modelling his action.
For the record, Mayank has played nine T20 games between March 30, 2024 and May 4, 2025, which is precisely 13 months and four days.
In these nine games, he played four T20s for Lucknow last year when he burst into the scene hitting speed guns at mid 150 clicks consistently.
However, his first breakdown happened in April that year and he was out for six months before getting fast-tracked by Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir into India's T20I team for the Bangladesh series.
By the time the series ended, his back injury resurfaced and he missed the whole domestic season doing rehabilitation at the NCA and then newly constructed COE.
"Now that Nitin Patel has left, you don't know who should one ask about what exactly has been Mayank's line of rehabilitation. Also the next question that needs to be asked is whether he was prematurely given the fit certificate without ensuring that his back injury could resurface within two games? You can call it COE or whatever but the timeline of Mayank Yadav and Umran Malik 's injury rehab leaves a lot to be desired," a well-known Strength and Conditioning trainer, who had worked at the old NCA told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
While Mayank is only 22 and years of cricket left ahead of him, this constant breakdowns will certainly make the selection committee lose confidence in him after a point.
He has a BCCI pace bowler's contract and has been under the board's aegis for a year now but recurrent injuries might require consultation from overseas specialists with COE completely found wanting.

RCB pacer Yash Dayal accused of raping minor; FIR registered in Jaipur

JAIPUR: IPL side Royal Challengers Bengaluru's under-fire pacer Yash Dayal has been accused of raping a minor in an FIR registered against him by Jaipur Police. The 27-year-old cricketer from Uttar Pradesh is already facing charges of sexual exploitation from a woman in Ghaziabad who has alleged that Dayal abused her after promising to marry her during a five-year relationship. SHO of Jaipur's Sanganer Sadar police station Anil Jaiman said that the latest FIR was registered on Wednesday. "FIR was registered against Yash Dayal for rape under relevant sections of POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) act and the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita)," he said here on Friday. According to Jaiman, the victim has alleged that the player raped her first in 2023 when she was 17 and a similar assault took place in April this year at a hotel in Sitapura area. "She alleged that the cricketer had promised help and support in her career. He contacted her in April this year when he was in Jaipur for IPL and called her to the hotel where he allegedly raped her again," the SHO said, adding that the matter was under investigation. Dayal, a medium pacer, is a reasonably well-known bowler in the Indian domestic circuit. He made his debut for Uttar Pradesh in 2018 and has since played 27 first-class games, claiming 84 wickets. He has appeared in 71 T20 matches that have yielded 66 scalps. Dayal started his IPL career with the Gujarat Titans in 2022 before moving to RCB, which bought him for Rs five crore in the 2024 players' auction. He was retained by the Bengaluru team for this year's season too and was a key member of the trophy-winning outfit under Rajat Patidar.

UP Warriorz appoint Abhishek Nayar as head coach

Mumbai, Jul 25 (PTI) Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar was on Friday named as the head coach of the Women's Premier League (WPL) franchise UP Warriorz ahead of the fourth season of the competition. Nayar, who was removed as the Indian men's team assistant coach recently, less than a year into the job, joins UPW after the franchise parted ways with Jon Lewis, who had been in charge of the team for the last three seasons. This isn't Nayar's first association with the Warriorz as he also helped them during the team's off-season training camps in Bengaluru after the first edition of the league. Speaking on his appointment, Nayar said, 'I really enjoyed my time working with the UP Warriorz before and I'm thrilled to take on this new role. WPL is a fantastic platform for women's cricket and I'm looking forward to working closely with the management to build a strong team. 'UP Warriorz already have a strong foundation in place, and I believe we can build something truly special. There is incredible potential and I will give it my all to help win their first-ever title this season." Nayar, who represented Mumbai with distinction in first-class cricket, also played three ODIs for India before his retirement in 2019. Since then, he has made a name for himself in coaching and was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders support staff as their assistant coach during their triumphant IPL campaign in 2024. Several high-profile cricketers such as Dinesh Karthik and KL Rahul have talked about the positive turn that Nayar brought about in their game. He has also served as the coach of the KKR academy in 2018 and was the head coach of Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in Caribbean Premier League in 2022. Nayar was appointed as the Indian men's team's assistant coach after Gambhir Gambhir became its head coach and was part of the team that won the Champions Trophy in the UAE earlier this year. However, his contract was terminated after that and he returned as KKR's assistant coach for IPL 2025. Jinisha Sharma, director at Capri Sports, which owns the franchise, said, 'We believe that this appointment shows our strong intent to elevate the team's performance and push for greater success in the upcoming WPL season. 'With Abhishek Nayar's leadership, experience in coaching at the highest level and ability to bring out the best in players, the franchise is confident of a strong showing this season." Kshemal Waingankar, COO, UP Warriorz, said, 'Abhishek Nayar is one of the best brains in the business in global cricket, and we are delighted to have on our side as the head coach. 'We are excited about his vision for UP Warriorz, and we are confident that under his leadership, the team can provide its fans with many more memorable moments in the future." 'Yuzvendra Chahal ki engagement ho chuki hai,' says Rishabh Pant amidst rumours of him dating RJ Mahvash, the cricketer reacts

Yuzvendra Chahal is rumoured to be dating RJ Mahvash after he divorced from Dhanashree Verma. Their divorce just got finalised a few months ago, right before the IPL kickstarted. All through the IPL, Mahvash was present in the stadium to cheer for Yuzvendra's team, Punjab Kings and even dropped pictures while she penned a note for him. Meanwhile, Mahvash and Yuzvendra were spotted together in London which added fuel to these rumours. And now, Rishab Pant joked that Yuzvendra is engaged. The cricketers had appeared on Kapil Sharma's show and Archana Puran Singh dropped a BTS vlog from the shoot. She shares some fun moments from the episode featuring cricketers Rishabh Pant , Yuzvendra Chahal, Abhishek Sharma, and Gautam Gambhir. The players happily greeted Navjot Singh Sidhu and the rest of the team. Archana personally asked each cricketer about their lives and warmly welcomed newcomer Abhishek Sharma to the show. The vlog starts with Archana complaining about her sore throat and wondering, 'How am I going to laugh on camera tonight?' She then meets Kapil and compliments his outfit, saying, 'Where did you get this suit? It looks amazing; the black and white is looking very good.' They quickly head to the set as Kapil mentions he has somewhere to be afterward. Sidhu enters, and the cricketers gather around him. Speaking about Abhishek, Sidhu says, 'I am so proud of him, because he is the future of Indian cricket .' Archana calls Abhishek a 'very handsome boy,' and notes that both he and Kapil come from Amritsar, which helped him get on the show. Archana talks to the players and asks Rishabh about his recent accident. Rishabh says the experience gave him 'a new perspective on life' and taught him a lot. He also shares that he has started a YouTube channel, and Archana gives him a shout-out on her own channel. While talking about YouTube, Rishabh jokingly puts a ring on Chahal's finger. Archana teases, 'Are you now engaged to him?' Rishabh replies, 'Iski toh ho chuki hai pehle. ' Yuzi then clarifies, 'The engagement is now over,' referring to his divorce from Dhanashree Verma. The teasing continues when Archana invites Chahal to her home in Madh Island but quickly adds that he's probably too busy to visit Mumbai. Rishabh jokes, 'He is here all the time.' Chahal responds, 'Sabko bata de tu (Why don't you tell everyone?),' and Rishabh starts shouting it on set. The playful joke was a nod to Chahal's rumored relationship with RJ Mahvash, who lives in Mumbai.
