Kota Kinabalu: Some 13 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students involved in the recent Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally that included the burning of a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim may face suspension or expulsion, said UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor. He said of the 13, two were involved in the burning of the caricature. Dr Kasim said UMS was not involved either directly or indirectly with the rally or the incident, which went viral on social media, and it has lodged a police report to facilitate further investigation. 'Besides being contrary to the norms of peaceful assemblies, UMS views the act as uncivilised, immature and does not reflect the intellect of the students of the institution of higher education,' he said. 'UMS also strongly rejects any action that risks endangering not just the participants but also the public,' he added. Dr Kasim also voiced disappointment with the group for questioning the appointment of Tun Musa Aman as the Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri.
Advertisement He said the 13 students would be brought before a disciplinary committee which will be formed soonest and will consist of selected appointed academicians to investigate the case, as well as decide on disciplinary action based on the Universities and University College Act (AUKU) Amended 2012. 'The committee will call the 13 students one by one and listen to their explanations. 'When a charge is established, it will convene to start the hearing process. 'The committee will also seek legal advice from the Legal Advisor of the Ministry of Higher Education before deciding on the disciplinary action,' he said. To a question, Dr Kasim said a suspension on the students' studies would involve a certain period of semester that will be decided accordingly. In addition, he said UMS would impose legal and disciplinary actions under AUKU on the students based on the offences they committed. He said the university management, through its security division, lodged a report at Alamesra police station on Monday. 'The two students involved in burning the caricature - a final year student and a second year student - were identified based on several video postings that went viral on social media. 'Actually, we have identified about 13 UMS students involved in the rally.' Dr Kasim said prior to staging the two-day rally over the weekend, I warned and reminded four student leaders from the Suara Mahasiswa UMS who were called to my office that they must conduct the rally in a civilised and peaceful manner. 'I even suggested that they hold a forum instead of staging the rally. We allow freedom of speech but it must be within the limit. I also advised them to never violate the existing laws, especially AUKU, as well as not committing any action that could tarnish the UMS image and reputation,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PM: Don't bar UMS student demonstrators from continuing their studies

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to ensure that students involved in the recent incident of burning a caricature of him are not barred from continuing their academic journey. The prime minister's senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said the future of the youth should not be sacrificed in the face of differing views. He said that as a former student activist and reformist, Anwar has consistently defended freedom of speech as enshrined in the Constitution. "The recent incident involving the burning of a caricature of the prime minister in Kota Kinabalu serves as a reminder of the people's deep hope that corruption will be eradicated at its roots. "The prime minister himself emerged from the student movement and once led the 'reformasi' movement in the streets, which gives him a genuine understanding of that voice. He has witnessed firsthand that criticism, no matter how harsh, is a vital part of celebrating democracy. "In line with the Madani approach, which prioritises compassion, the prime minister has also instructed the MOHE and UMS to ensure that the students involved are not barred from continuing their academic journey. The future of the youth should not be sacrificed in the face of differing views," he said during the Prime Minister's Office daily briefing today. Tunku Nashrul said Anwar had emphasised that the spirit of change begins with the courage of young people to speak the truth, guided by facts and sincere intentions. On the government's part, he said, its commitment to reform remains strong and is already being translated into concrete action. "This commitment will not stop here; it will continue to be refined and implemented in a structured manner. "For the sake of future generations, the Madani government will continue on the path of reform, ensuring that every effort to combat corruption leads to the well-being and prosperity of all Malaysians," he said. Earlier today, police said they detained three participants of the Sabah Gempur Rasuah 2.0 after recording their statements. Kota Kinabalu police chief, Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda said that all three were detained under the Sedition Act, and for burning a caricature of the prime minister. "All three were detained after having their statements recorded regarding the act of vandalism on a student's vehicle and the organisation of the assembly, he said.

KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to act with compassion and refrain from expelling or suspending the 13 students involved in last weekend's protest rally. Higher Education Minister Dato' Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir said Anwar personally contacted him on Tuesday to express concern over the students' future, emphasising the importance of allowing them to complete their studies despite campus regulations and the protest targeting him. 'Out of compassion, the Prime Minister hopes these students won't face expulsion or academic suspension,' Zambry said after a student dialogue at UMS. The protest, held over two days in the city centre, included the burning of a caricature of the Prime Minister. * Read full report in tomorrow's print paper or log in or sign up for e-paper and premium online news access. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss.
