Let's Make-Up: the new beauty launches to have on your radar in May 2025

It is officially the best month of the year - and that's not just because it is my birthday month. Taurus season is giving a lot to look forward to on the beauty front too. The worlds of fashion and beauty are colliding with Marc Jacobs teaming up with pimple patch brand Starface - and that's just the start. Byredo is entering a new category, GHD is making effortless beach waves actually effortless to create and MAC is making a worthy dupe for Laura Mercier's Caviar Stick.

Crocs Get Yet Another Makeover, Courtesy Of Mowalola

The Mowalola x Crocs collab makes a strong case for camo and graffiti shoes - something I never thought I'd say. Splashed with spray paint and scribbles across the chunky soles, the design turns the brand's most recognisable silhouette into something more a little bit bolder. It's proof that Crocs are no longer just reserved for the garden, they're cool enough to style them with baggy denim, skirts, or mini dresses. That rebellious streak is comes courtesy of the brand Mowalola. Founded by Nigerian-born, London-based designer Mowalola Ogunlesi, the brand has become synonymous with challenging convention. Recently the designer has been stacking the collaborations, teaming with the likes of Marc Jacobs, Ksubi and Miss Sixty. A Central Saint Martins alumna, her work finds its inspiration in rave culture, Nigerian heritage, and politics, often blurring the line between fashion and social commentary. With celebrity fans including Dua Lipa, Rihanna, and Kim Kardashian, she's carved out a space as one of fashion's most daring voices. Crocs, meanwhile, have their own unlikely history. First released in 2002 as a boating clog, they gained a reputation for comfort rather than style, beloved by healthcare workers and gardeners but dismissed by fashion people as the ultimate 'ugly shoe.' Yet over the last decade, the brand has staged one of fashion's greatest image flips. Collaborations with Christopher Kane, Balenciaga, Simone Rocha, and Jean Paul Gaultier have turned the clog into a sought-after item. All things considered, the Mowalola x Crocs collab is exactly what you'd expect when two brands known for defying expectations come together. Scroll to shop the three piece collaboration. 1. Can £6 Primark fragrances really rival £150 Byredo scents? I put them to the test

Could this be Primark's most luxe-smelling perfume collection yet? Perfume is one of those luxuries I've always loved, but when you're looking at £150 a bottle for designer spritzes, it's not exactly something you can easily start a collection of without having thousands of pounds to spare – a shame considering most of us like to swap our scents as often as we swap shoes. So, when I spotted Primark dropped a very designer-inspired new fragrance line with scents for just £6, I had to try them. The PS… Pro summer collection of six scents, available in stores now, promises grown-up blends with surprisingly high-end notes (we're talking rose oils, sandalwood and musks), but at a price point that won't require skipping a week's food shop to make room in your budget. I also immediately spotted similarities between the bottle design and Byredo's, with monochrome branding, squatty clear glass bottles and rounded statement lids. Lo and behold, when I looked further into the notes for two of Primark's new scents, they're very comparable to two of Byredo's top-sellers. Naturally, the question is: how do Primark's Nomad Oasis and Electric Rose measure up against Byredo's Rose of No Man's Land and Desert Dawn when it comes to scent and staying powder? I find out... Primark vs Byredo: note by note Primark PS… Pro Electric Rose, £6 for 30ml Top: Ambrette seeds (musky, slightly sweet) Heart: Orris, Damascene rose oil Base: Ambroxan (warm amber) Byredo Rose of No Man's Land, £150 for 50ml Top: Pink pepper, Turkish rose petals Heart: Raspberry blossom, Turkish rose absolute Base: Amber, papyrus Verdict: Electric Rose has a beautifully soft rose heart with that musky ambrette top note, making it feel romantic and wearable for every day. Compared to Byredo's Rose of No Man's Land, which is spicier and more layered thanks to pink pepper and raspberry blossom, Primark's version is simpler but still feels sophisticated. Primark PS… Pro Nomad Oasis, £6 for 30ml Top: Citrus, juniper berries Heart: Soft woods Base: Sandalwood, mineral musk Byredo Desert Dawn, £150 for 50ml Top: Cardamom, rose petals Heart: Carrot, cedarwood, sandalwood Base: Papyrus, vetiver, silk musk Verdict: Nomad Oasis has a similar grounded, woody base that makes Desert Dawn so addictive, with sandalwood tying both together. While Byredo layers in spicy cardamom and an earthy mix of cedarwood and vetiver, Primark's version keeps things fresher with citrus and juniper. It's lighter, brighter and feels like an easy day-to-night scent. So, are they worth it? I'll be honest: you're not going to get quite the same depth and staying power from a £6 bottle as you do from a Byredo masterpiece. After a few hours, the Primark scents (they aren't EDPs, so they are lighter) do need a top-up, whereas Byredo tends to linger from morning until night. But, here's the thing, for the price of one Byredo, you could buy 25 bottles of Primark perfume. That means you can re-spritz as often as you like and even experiment with layering without feeling guilty. What surprised me most was just how expensive the PS... scents smell. Neither Nomad Oasis nor Electric Rose has a tell-tale synthetic, overly sweet hit you sometimes find in cheaper perfumes. They're balanced, grown-up and genuinely lovely. I wore Electric Rose on a lunch meeting, and a colleague assumed it was a designer scent. I still believe that designer perfumes are worth spending on when you can, because their staying power and complexity are unrivalled, but honestly, I'm a little taken aback at how good supermarket and high street perfumes are getting. Watch out, designers!

‘This Laura Mercier setting spray is utterly budgeproof - even in a heatwave'

Metro journalists select and curate the products that feature on our site. If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission – learn more Laura Mercier has a whole host of reliable make-up products many know and love (me included), whether it's the primer, Caviar Stick eyeshadow, blushers, concealer or setting powder. I rely on a setting spray to hold my make-up look in place come day and night, summer and winter. While I have been an avid fan of the iconic Translucent Setting Powder for longer than I can remember, I now have a new favourite from Laura Mercier – the Translucent Hydrating Setting Spray Ultra Blur. Not only does this setting spray hold my make-up in place for hours, but even during a wedding on a blistering hot August day, and plenty of dancing, it stayed put – for me, the bride, and other bridesmaids, which says a lot! A skincare and make-up hybrid as this setting spray has been formulated with hyaluronic acid, French mineral water to hydrate the skin, white lily extract and ectoin to soothe and protect the skin barrier, as well as niacinamide to minimise pores. The spray projects like a very gentle mist, which is not irritating nor does it spoil the make-up. BUY NOW FOR £32 There are many reasons I love Laura Mercier's Translucent Setting Spray Ultra-Blur, and it's safe to say it certainly lives up to its name. This setting spray holds make-up in place for 24-hours, but also offers a blurred finish that leaves the complexion looking utterly flawless. I'd even go as far as to say my skin looks airbrushed after using it. I was recently trusted to complete my best friend's wedding day make-up, and this was the product I knew I had to include as a final step to hold in place, which it did. After hours of wear, on a hot August day, dancing for hours, happy tears, her make-up stayed put. What stands this setting spray out from the crowd is it is a make-up and skincare hybrid. According to Space NK it's '98.5% skincare-based formula'. This setting spray has been formulated with hyaluronic acid, French mineral water for a boost of hydration, white lily extract and ectoin to protect the skin barrier, which I think is key as some setting sprays have been known to cause my skin to breakout, except this. It is also enriched with niacinamide to reduce the appearance of fine lines, pores and breakouts. This setting spray is alcohol free so it is not drying on the skin either – another win! What is also worth raving about is that this spray is more like a micro-fine mist, not an aerosol, or a fierce watery spray that fires in your eye (IYKYK). This setting spray prevents make-up from smudging, transferring, creasing, caking, and getting clogged in pores, plus it's not tacky or tight either. I simply can't rave about it enough, and I'm not the only one. More Trending One Space NK shopper, who goes under the handle ESRL85, shared: 'I'm so fussy when it comes to setting sprays especially for drier skin but I really like this one. On initial application it gives a really gentle mist release that gives the skin a hydration hit without being overly shiny or dewy. It settles make-up and powder instantly and dries to a soft focus finish. I would definitely say it prolongs the wear of make-up by keeping it fresher and hydrated. It definitely stops make-up breaking down and dehydrating on dry skin and also minimises the need for touch ups.' A separate shopper, named Hernameisaleks, added: 'Laura Mercier's Translucent Hydrating Setting Spray Ultra-Blur is a game changer for flawless, long-lasting make-up. The ultra-fine mist locks in your look without feeling heavy, while its hydrating formula keeps skin fresh and comfortable all day. It blurs imperfections beautifully, giving a smooth, soft-focus finish that looks natural. Perfect for dry or combination skin, it delivers both performance and skincare benefits in one elegant spritz.' While Libc praised: 'This setting spray works very well. I liked the fact that it produced a fine mist, not feeling at all heavy on my skin, and gives the skin some hydration and a nice glow without feeling at all greasy. It really did help my make up last all day – this may be my new favourite setting spray! Another great product from Laura Mercier.' Errr… we're stocking up whilst we can!
